So, I'm now on Delta Chat and very curious to try it out. I actually read the entire help file and it's got me thinking about how nice it is to have an E2E messaging option that's fairly straightforward unlike Matrix, Session and SimpleX. All 3 of those have some technical hurdle you have to jump over while it feels like Delta Chat (going to continue assuming it's 2 words until someone corrects me) is a breath of fresh air. That was a rather frictionless sign-up process, while Signal demands you fork over your phone number. If you would like to say hello, just send me a direct message to start the process and I'll invite you to chat with me. #Privacy #E2EMessaging #deltaChat

Please check out delta.chat and spread the use about this messenger.

Developed in Germany, end-to-end-encryption by design, using email-infrastructure (therfore cannot get turned off by an authoritarian state), including applets, like polls, todo-lists, calendar, collaborative work on documents, games, ...

I use it with several people and really can recommend it :)

#DeltaChat

#DeltaChat, it is decentralized, doesn't require phone numbers or any private data, onboarding is smooth much easier than in signal, similar UI (it is a signal fork) it has much better multi-device and multi-profile support, secure in-chat mini-apps like notepads, to-do lists, shopping lists, etc

there are alternatives, but they will not gain momentum if you don't promote them and stop misinforming people selling a centralized silo running on amazon as sovereign
@leanderlindahl

instead of Signal, #DeltaChat is a much better alternative, super easy to use while decentralized, without requiring phone numbers or any private data at all, with good multi-device and multi-profile support (you can have as many profiles as you want without needing extra SIM cards, this makes it good for the kids of the family as well!)

I think people will get confused by the way you formulated the post "secure messaging app" that is why you will get recommendations for Delta Chat and other encrypted messengers, maybe better clarify you mean "secure SMS app" to avoid confusion, and btw I recommend you to give a try to #DeltaChat as replacement for Signal, no phone number or any data required, decentralized, good multi-device, etc.

for SMS I liked "QKSMS" but that was years ago, see successor:

when you are trying to sleep at night and suddenly remember that #ArcaneChat / #DeltaChat are the only piece of software out there that makes it possible easily and for free to have a #decentralized #e2ee #mailinglist #newsletter (called "channels" inside the app) that is portable, doesn't depend on a specific/central #email server and can be easily migrated to a completely different server / address without any visible change or disturbance for your subscribers

all FREE and without limits 🤯

that rocks! :hearthands:

#DeltaChat FTW!

It has proven harder to block than #Signal and #Matrix in multiple countries and emergencies, right?

I thought I was going crazy since #Today I can't find any obvious mention of #Dovecot and #ChatMail servers.

BUT, here it is: github.com/chatmail/relay/tree…

Based on the kinda snippy text there in the readme, I guess the #DeltaChat folks decided they want to down-play the dovecot dependency in case they decided to do something else in future.

Also, "custom builds" might make some folks ... itchy.

Installed #DeltaChat on my phone.
Gonna try setting it up for the first time later.

Posted from toot in termux on my phone 😂

@delta @arcanechat
#bugreport: when tapping on an attachment in #arcanechat and #deltachat, it asks me what app to open with, but it never works.

if i open this pdf with pdf reader, it opens an empty "null.pdf".

if i "save as ..." with #materialfiles, it throws an error, see screenshot.

however, long-pressing the message and "export attachment" works just fine.

i report the issue here because i recently deleted my #gitslop account. ✨💩

we need to make alternatives like #DeltaChat more popular, it is decentralized and people can migrate from server to server without losing their messages, chats or contacts, in fact your contacts don't even get disturbed by your migration, your data is really owned by you and you are not tied to a particular server, we need more software like this

what is more, it has offline-first in-chat mini-apps that can replace several online centralized services

#deltachat does

- no bindings to public handles/numbers

- no address-book upload

- not do public contact or group discovery

- not have critical persistent server state (!)

Social identification is private, between people though ephemeral #P2P #E2EE messages.

Servers see messages with random sender and recipient addresses, but those can not be mapped to a phone number or public handle. Servers see IP addresses. But you can use Tor, or a VPN, if you want to hide that.

It' not all bad :)

#ArcaneChat is just a #DeltaChat client, my main user is... wait for it... ME! so it is basically Delta Chat with some tweaks to my taste, I shared it and it turns out some other people seem to like it, according to the #GooglePlay downloads it is mainly used in #Russia, #Cuba, #USA, #Iran, #Germany and #India

I don't actively try to convince people to use it, and in general it is better to push for DC that is multi-platform, then in #android some might prefer AC as their DC client

@opensourceopenmind similarly, I got my family and friends to talk to me via #DeltaChat because I simply don't have #WhatsApp, #Telegram etc. in my phone, I never try to convince them talking about encryption or open source, I simply say "I don't use that apps, you can reach me in this one" and then it is about a practical problem and not ideological one, I don't go saying "you should uninstall whatsapp now" but they are more willing to respect/understand your own ideological decisions

@bogo

#Signal a deux défauts, et ils sont politiques :

- Il est étasunien;

or... you could use #DeltaChat that makes encrypting #email so easy that even your mom will be sending you encrypted email (even verifed fingerprints safe against MITM) without even realizing it or knowing what is #PGP

thanks for putting up one more server. Is there a way to be chosen randomly by people installing #DeltaChat for the first time?

I'd be curious what your experiences are after a year or so; daily users, bandwidth–, storage– and hosting costs.

Thanks for putting it up! 🤗

@TagHunt currently, #deltachat works everywhere, including china where it's a kind of secret tip on remaining securely connected when cross borders.

several people reporting lately that #deltachat has become their main app: They are now spending more time in the chats, also with web apps, than in any other app. It may be a turn to more private communications when social media has become more toxic, obnoxious and dangerous in many places?

#deltachat and #chatmail.is indeed about being readily available when other forms of communications become unavailable or dangerous like in Iran or Russia but also in western and other countries.

Hello @delta

I'm puzzled, the #DeltaChat Android app (from the Google play store, 2.34.0) doesn't offer to set a video chat instance

The version 2.11.0 from the FDroid store does.
Is this intentional?

The first one is set to English, the FDroid one to German

Side problem: while the web version of #FDroid also shows me 2.34.0 the "app store" on #EOS always downloads 2.11.0. It even offers an update but the version stays on 2.11
