Trying #DeltaChat for a few days. But it cannot fulfill one mandatory use case for me : synchronization on more that 2 devices.

Sorry @delta, but for now, I'll remain with @signalapp and @session (and XMPP of course 😉) !

Good job for your work anyway. It's promising.

I noticed the upcoming chatmail ‘relays’ feature in #deltachat. Changing the relay in the app (version 2.33) seems really easy, fantastic!

@delta I was wondering (for a friend) if there will be any publicly available relays published as a *#tor #onion service* as well? In combination with the app’s proxy support this would be awesome for any user’s #privacy.

#deltachat PSAs regarding the last 24 hours:

1) If you messaged someone about 20-30 hours ago, and did not get an expected response/receipt better "resend" (long-tap or right-click the message to resend). Unfortunately, not all queued messages at the crashing nine.testrun.org server made it to the new one.

2) 2.33+ app releases are rolling out, supporting using "multiple relays" so that failing relays (like happened above) will not cause lost messages anymore. See support.delta.chat/t/how-to-mi…

in speaking with my colleagues at @delta i began to test multi-transport (multi-relay) functionality.

early testing looks very good on android, just now we wait until all client engineers bring core library into parity.

we are close to being unstoppable.

now is an amazing time to try #deltachat

interested in running #chatmail relay?

or contact me. i run several and am happy to help you onboard!

I really like the idea of #deltachat but I never tried it until now.
It just seemed sooo uninteresting. Why? Because of the graphical and #UI branding.

I'm not even a huge UI fan, I use CLI apps 90% of the time. But the mundane and gray logo, the gray UI, every graphical element of it seems so uninteresting.
The screenshots look like they are from 2010s.

I think upping their design game will really boost users.
Delta is a unique idea on the backend, give users a unique experience in the frontend too.

RE: chaos.social/@thefinalstrawrad…

Another nice surprise! A careful discussion and appreciation of our almost 8-year long running efforts, and its #deltachat and #chatmail artifacts. The "Signal contingency plan" comes complete with podcast, website and zine!

#freesofadvent Day 7 is #deltachat by @delta Use it everyday to communicate with family across a variety of devices. And now they're adding voice and video calls. PLUS, the small applets within the conversations, like grocery lists, are super useful.

Just reading up on #DeltaChat and it does look interesting as a possible signal alternative. Even deploying your own relay seems easy too. Anybody here using it and has any positive feedback ? I mean share if you've negative too as it'll all be gratefully received by all.

@ambiguous_yelp

> Quantum resistance is important now because of an attack vector called Store Now Decrypt Later

that would apply in a centralized server with access to all messages, but with #DeltaChat you can use a trusted server or your own server and then the attacker can't "store now" because communication between you and your delta chat server is already encrypted with quantum-resistant encryption

A few things #deltachat apps are doing positively different from #Signal apps

- easiest onboarding ever; not depending on phone numbers or other private data

- support for multiple chat profiles/identities

- decentralized servers, not depending on US-based GAFAM etc.

- migration from one app/platform to any other

- easy multi-device support for any chat profile

- developers have chances to get their PRs merged :)

- mini-apps support via webxdc.org

anything missing?

#Telegram has a nice and fast UI, granted.

But the 1 billion people using TG are at risk because of its big central database that any state security service craves for. Moreover, several anonymization proxy-bot offerings were hacked in 2024, identifying millions of users and content.

#deltachat builds anonymization directly into the app and has pervasive end-to-end encryption. #chatmail relay operators can sleep well, knowing they have nothing. Ergo, E2EE is good for any operators sleep! :)

I love #deltachat at first-sight few days ago, like I was love #telegram at first sight around twelve years ago.

Only one thing I missed on deltachat now, there's no simple library to create deltachat bot using #nodejs, like telegraf for telegram.

"if only there was a #chat app that had end-to-end #encryption, without phone numbers or any private data required for registration, #decentralized, easy to use, with multi-profile and multi-device support and available in all platforms"

You forgot #DeltaChat, which is an excellent alternative to WhatsApp.

from a random community chat: "#Telegram secret chats exist so you can share your #deltachat QR/link to get off Telegram 😇"

In related news, Arte published a well-done documentary film about "Telegram, the dark empire of Pawel Durov" up (german audio only) arte.tv/de/videos/122721-000-A… -- it's a dive into various TG happenings during the last decades, biographical origins of telegram development, the durov brothers etc..

Great news: DeltaTouch (@deltatouch), a #DeltaChat client created for #UbuntuTouch, is now available on #Flathub!

We've updated our listing linuxphoneapps.org/apps/page.c… accordingly, and would love to see more apps for Ubuntu Touch land on Flathub (and thus be available for #postmarketOS, #Mobian, #Droidian) - the flatpak manifest may help github.com/flathub/page.codebe… .

#India is trying to impose SIM binding on messaging apps, which means apps will have to keep monitoring, if it is the SIM card with the same number that was used for registration with the app is being used on the phone where the app is installed.
This is going to be another privacy issue for end users and a technical challenge for apps.
What about apps that doesn't use a phone number for registration like #deltachat or #simplex? How would the government implement this rule?
The way governments think of solving problems most of the time are very bizarre, and this certainly is one of them.

if you use #DeltaChat or #ArcaneChat, I recommend you to use them with #chatmail accounts, which provide faster speed and prevent spammers/scammers from sending emails to your kids and other family members, only other family members will be able to get in contact with them via QR scan or invite link

Was nutzt Ihr? Alternative Vorschläge gern als Kommentar.

Version 2.25.0 is available in the OpenStore and as snap 🎉

We're inching closer to feature parity with the official apps as this release brings the "Apps & Media" overview for chats and contacts that has been missing so far. In addition, a number of bugs have been fixed. For the complete list of changes, check out the changelog: codeberg.org/lk108/deltatouch/…

As a special treat, packages for #UbuntuTouch 16.04 (xenial) have been prepared. The OpenStore does not accept updates for UT xenial anymore, get the xenial update from codeberg.org/lk108/deltatouch/… instead.

#DeltaChat is truly one of the most secure with its decentralized servers.

My vps 1cpu stopped running reliably, thanks to #matrix using huge amounts of disk

Setting up #xmpp with a reverse proxy is undocumented.

#Deltachat server hosting script doesn’t work with the latest python

I’m really struggling for #selfhosted chat options.

@kolev I love #XMPP but not having a single cross-platform fully-featured client makes onboarding normies much more difficult, hindering adoption greatly.

Nothing wrong with being the #Ubuntu or #LinuxMint of decentralised #FOSS messengers... people who need the Archlinuxes and BSDs will find them in time.

I have managed to onboard lots of people to cross-platform messengers like #DeltaChat, #ElementMessenger and #SignalApp, but not a single person to XMPP. Cross platform apps also make switching OSes eaiser, e.g. migrating from Windows to Linux, or Android to LinuxMobile.

I think the killer features are simple:

1. Actually decentralised. Not tomorrow, not theorical, not a work-in-progress. Decentralised: NOW.

2. WebXDC apps taking advantage of that decentralisation are going to be one of its biggest pulls. PixelSocial can entirely overtake local neighbourhood/family FB groups for example once is a bit more feature-complete.

3. Everything's encrypted without annoying you like Matrix

4. UI feels famiiliar like old pre-FB-purchase Whatsapp. Smaller learning curves or no curves at alll, are awesome.

#Deltachat

it's a neat idea to postpone server choice until later, and onboard with some default.

#deltachat apps are currently learning to use multiple addresses at once ("multi-transport"), along with cryptographic hardening against evil server operators. The goal is to provide multi-server onboarding by default, and to automate server migrations (although for a while there will be an advanced settings interface where it's manually managed). You'd be onboarding "to the network" :)

Self-hosted Delta Chat?

I've been thinking more about the hurtle of getting friends and family to use federated/self-hosted services. One of the issues to onboarding is people not "getting" the idea of picking an instance. This has led, in part, to "default" instances, like mastadon.social, that grow so large it almost defeates the idea.

I've been thinking that I really wish #DeltaChat had a web client. I have had a MUCH more difficult time getting folks to try that out than even #fediverse SNS. But I was thinking how the heck are you going to pull that off without @delta having to host the overhead for a robust web client and possibly host a gigantic server system that has to grow exponentially to keep everyone's email from all the possible email providers, really defeating the goal of their project.

This morning, I thought of a possible solution to both problems. What if you have a built-in transfer requirement. So you start with a default, say pleb.joinmastodon.org or noob.delta.chat and after a certain time (3 months or something) you have to either transfer to a new instance, including hosting your own client for in browser decryption web access to your encrypted mail chats or your account (in the case of #mastodon) or web client access (in the case of Delta Chat) is shut off.

Do you think this could work?

@delta_chat

Well, maybe we need to be more clear what we are trying to do: #deltachat apps are a cross-platform private messenger suite, that aims to provide a consistent UX/UI for users with lots of experience using WhatsApp and Signal.

Telegram has good fast UX but is hardly a private messenger (it has a central cleartext database of everyone and everything).

Matrix and XMPP are well-esteemed fellows in federated messaging, but so far didn't grow a WA/Signal-level cross-platform messaging UX.

YMMV

Mental note of an idea before I forget and never tell anyone: @thunderbird should adopt and dig in deep on being the best in class mobile and desktop client for #DeltaChat in addition to being an email and RSS reader. Compete on simplicity and features against closed, commercial Messangers, not just corporate email. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
