The always-in-crisis crisis that is Mexico's public health system is worsening. Some headlines just from today:
"Workers in the nutrition area of the Doctor Aurelio Valdivieso Civil Hospital in the city of Oaxaca denounced that they have run out of food for more than 200 patients from various Indigenous communities in the state."

In 2024, at least 28,900 people were forced to flee from their homes and internally displaced in Mexico, primarily as a result of the actions of organized crime.
Growing militarization in Mexico:
"The Chamber of Deputies approved in general the bill on the new National Guard Law, which allows for the transfer of the National Guard to the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), the monitoring of communications by the army and the possibility for military personnel to run for elected office.
"The reforms completely eliminate civilian control of the force and grant full management of its administrative and operational functions to the military. In addition, the National Guard will now be empowered to conduct covert operations, use 'simulated users', access geo-referenced data and intercept communications."
"Water rights defender Karina Ruiz Ocampo, who had been disappeared since April 13 after unknown persons broke into her home and forcibly took her away, was found dead on Saturday, May 3, in the municipality of Amatitán, Jalisco. Karina was a member of the organization La Cima Nuestra Prioridad, and defended the right to water in the La Cima neighborhood in El Arenal, where she lived.
"Due to her advocacy work, Karina had received constant threats through social networks, and feared for her safety. March 23, 2025 was her last participation in a public demonstration."

A migrant encampment housing more than 400 people was evicted Thursday night in Mexico City, but city officials deny involvement and claim not to know who did it.
Suspicion is falling on organized crime after reports that people were being forced to pay 8,000 pesos per month for the "right" to stay in the camp, which was in a public park.

Yesterday, the P’urhépecha municipality of Cherán, Michoacán, celebrated 14 years of autonomy. It began on April 15, 2011, when a group of women blocked cartel-linked illegal loggers from removing trees from the community. This act sparked a mass uprising that saw the community reclaim its territory, establishing barricades, 179 permanent bonfires, a form of autonomous government rooted in P’urhépecha forms of communal organization, and expelling the cartels, police, and political parties.
If you want to know more about Cherán, might I suggest "The Bonfires of Autonomy," a piece I wrote for the anthology edited by @cbmilstein, "Deciding for Ourselves: The Promise of Direct Democracy:" akpress.org/deciding-for-ourse…

www.akpress.orgThis anthology explores this “sense of freedom in the air,” as one piece puts it, by looking at contemporary examples of autonomous, directly democratic spaces and the real-world dilemmas they experience, all the while underscoring the egalitarian…
The Mexican government's battle with reality and the United Nations continued today with the Senate passing a resolution demanding the UN remove Olivier de Frouville from his post as head of the Committee on Enforced Disappearances for daring to propose that disappearances in Mexico occur in a "generalized or systemic manner."
Apparently what forces the State's hand is when some UN functionary says something approximating the truth.
Apparently they can't be bothered with the 124,000 disappeared, the extermination camp discovered in Jalisco last month, or their own vapid promises to take action after the fact.

Andrea Becerril y Georgina Saldierna (La Jornada)
Some Mexico news:
President Sheinbaum and her lackeys at the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH - an ostensibly autonomous state institution) are battling with the United Nations over disappearances. The UN says disappearances in Mexico are "generalized and systemic." With no sense of irony, or apparent grasp on reality, the CNDH replied that, "We reject that Mexico is experiencing a crisis of disappearances and more so reject that these are the result of State policy." They then ramble on about foreign meddling making things worse. Apparently 124,000 disappeared since 2006 is something that just happens?

In an incident causing widespread indignation, on Saturday afternoon, a poorly built structure collapsed in strong winds at the international AXE Ceremonia Festival in Mexico City, killing two photojournalists. That was at 5:30pm. The show continued until 2am with no interruption.
The festival was to proceed on Sunday and authorities said they would close the venue after the festival ended. In response to outrage over the deaths and refusals by artists, including mi querido Ed Maverick, to perform as if nothing happened, they finally cancelled the remainder of the event.
"It was not an accident, it was negligence," say the journalists' union.

Hmm...so Kristi Noem asked Claudia Sheinbaum for Mexico to share its biometric data with the US. Sheinbaum declined, stating that such data does not exist.
aristeguinoticias.com/010425/m…
Meanwhile, Sheinbaum sends to Congress a proposal to create a biometric database in the name of helping find the disappeared. The database would absorb all public and private data collection - from healthcare to education to cell phones to religious institutions to banks to the post office.

George Lucas got the idea for Princess Leia's iconic "space buns" from Mexican revolutionary women. Specifically Clara de la Rocha, a total badass.
Clara's descendant recounted:
"She crossed a river on horseback…and was able to take out a power station in order to allow the rebel forces to attack during night without being seen."
Just like Leia, eh?

According to the federal government, the cop who killed Ayotzinapa student Yanqui Kothan Gómez Peralta last Thursday "escaped" while being transferred yesterday. According to the Guerrero state government, he was never in custody.
Either way, a couple hundred students from Ayotzinapa protested at the State Prosecutor's Office demanding justice for Yanqui. At least 11 vehicles were set on fire. Later the protest moved to the state capitol building, which was the recipient of rocks and fireworks.
This morning in Mexico City, during President López Obrador's daily press conference, students from Ayotzinapa and family members of the disappeared protested outside the National Palace and smashed in one of its doors. Military police responded by firing tear gas.
Since February 26, the parents of the 43 disappeared from Ayotzinapa have been encamped in front of the National Palace, demanding a dialog with López Obrador, the handing over of military documents, and the return of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI).
