LibreOffice's documentation is made by a worldwide community – and now, that community has an improved editor, to make their work simpler! blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #foss #opensource

2024 is here! But let's have a quick recap of #LibreOffice project and community updates in December 2023: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #foss #OpenSource

As we wrap up 2023, we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to #LibreOffice in the last year! We really appreciate your support 😊 blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #foss #OpenSource

This is neat! In our place the rule is even 1.5m clearance for overtaking within city boundaries and 2m on country roads. But that‘s pure theory, as most car drivers don‘t know or care about this rule. (And we don’t have an official sign for it.)

As to #FOSS here, I know about (though have never used) the openbikesensor.org hardware that measures these distances in real life. Also very interesting!

Moin @ADFC_Hamburg @CriticalMassHamburg @VCDNord – kanntet ihr schon mapcomplete.org/ghostbikes.htm… ?

In my talks and discussions about the role of Open Source maintainers, I usually list a number of reasons why maintainers might quit or otherwise reduce their involvement.

"The Russian army destroyed my house" hasn't been on that list yet 😐 🇺🇦

I am amazed that the history is so deep and reach. From talking to government ministers and training policymakers on #OpenSource, to building code and software for Nepalese users, Nepal is not new to the #FOSS movement.

I am learning so much about the ambition from the local movement!

We're back for Day 2 of #GNOMEAsia2023 with the opening keynote by Hempal Shrestha. He is introducing the past, present, and future of the #OpenSource community in Nepal.

I love how this is starting: a steward of the culture and the movement in #Nepal painting a picture of how the local movement got to where it is today, the successes, and the challenges. There are so many students here. Inspiring the next generation for folks who are coming in and are hungry for more #FOSS.

Our next big release will be #LibreOffice 24.2, in February 2024! (We're moving to a "year.month" version scheme, to make it more clear when the software was released.) And the first Alpha development build is now available for testing: qa.blog.documentfoundation.org… #foss #opensource

ForgeFed nails the current dilemma in open source:

> Without federation, we end up having to choose between:
>
> * Centralizing into huge profit-oriented websites, where we're powerless
> * Hosting our code on a small website where we're in control and freedom but isolated from the community

This is a critically important project.
