I finally had to test in real life what I’d been building. Today I produced the first show featuring #SARA. The operation was a success—everyone survived, nothing exploded, and all the mixes sounded exactly the way I programmed them. ;)
That said, remember this is still a very early test version, created entirely with GPT Codex.
By the way, I’ve gone back to working with GPT 5.1. The latest Max model is, for now at least, a disappointment—it kept tripping over more complex tasks, especially when it had to remember and satisfy several conditions at once.

#India is trying to impose SIM binding on messaging apps, which means apps will have to keep monitoring, if it is the SIM card with the same number that was used for registration with the app is being used on the phone where the app is installed.
This is going to be another privacy issue for end users and a technical challenge for apps.
What about apps that doesn't use a phone number for registration like #deltachat or #simplex? How would the government implement this rule?
The way governments think of solving problems most of the time are very bizarre, and this certainly is one of them.

Was nutzt Ihr? Alternative Vorschläge gern als Kommentar.

@hub it was super annoying because they didn't do anything until I decided to calculate the pro-rated amount owing, and sent it to them, at which point I found out they want to charge for an extra day of service, so I've got a stupid bill for $3.21 cents. I found a jar of pennies at my mom's house when I was cleaning it out, I think I'll use that to pay them.

I've finally got my flight booked to go to North Carolina for Christmas and beyond.

Waited a bit long, so couldn't get the flight/date I wanted, but I could have gotten a 6:00 AM flight from New York that landed in Greensboro at 11:30 PM after a 14 hour layover in Chicago. Wait, what?

I just ordered the Ninja 501 air fryer. It has two zones, which I've found is something I want, having used a single-zone 6-qt air fryer for the last week or two. Overall, I really enjoy the air fryer, but I want to be able to cook a burger patty and frozen fries, or some chicken and a potatoe, or some saussage and some potatoe crowns. I also want bigger baskets, but I'd rather have two smaller ones than one huge one. Plus, it's $120 off right now.

If you have 45 seconds, could you listen to this audio and let me know which of the three clips you think sounds best? (First, second, or third? They're each about 15 seconds.)

I'm fiddling with my audio editing, and I've listened to them so many times I've lost all perspective.

Today we bring you significantly better scrolling performance in GNOME Calendar's month view. It no longer lags on my PC!

gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c… is mostly solved with a combination of Georges' gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c… and @TheEvilSkeleton's gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c….

Enjoy it in Nightly, or @gnome 50.

This is why I use a 16-years-old PC as my main development machine: it forces you to solve every performance issue, instead of throwing faster hardware at the problem.

@matt Yes, it's the standard GNOME desktop running on that second-hand Dell Precision T3500 (from 2009), with a second-hand AMD Radeon R9 270 GPU (from 2013). This PC was the main benchmark behind the biggest fixes that happened in gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-s… in 2023-2024 (huge thanks to @YaLTeR), and therefore is the reason why GNOME Shell doesn't visibly slow down over time anymore since versions 45-46 and newer.

I'm still looking for volunteers to fix the remainder in gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-s… 🤞

So.

Xreal glasses are USB-C glasses that put a huge screen in front of your eyes. They connect to your computer or phone and act as a massive monitor that only you can see. While I can't use them, I'm going to get a pair today that I can return in a week. I'm especially curious to find out how my sister, who has good vision but five-degree fields, reacts to a huge screen that close.

It's time for another #fedidreams! Get ready to be underwhelmed. Last night, work assigned me to recover the mythical legendary sandwich. It was always named in full, in my dream. Apparently, the mythical legendary sandwich was originally created by the Romins, but when Rome was renamed to Italy, all of the maps had to be updated, and the secret hiding place of the mythical legendary sandwich was lost in the process. Can you tell I passed every history class I ever took? To assist me on my search, I was partnered with a set of North Korean triplets named Gold, Silver, and Bronze. No, I don't know, either. But lucky for me, anyone who is holding hands with two out of three North Korean triplets can fly and teleport. I'm sure all of you already knew this rule, but it was news to me! It turned out to be really useful, though. After teleporting to Italy, we began flying over the coast. This was surprisingly less comfortable than you would expect; I was just...dangling by the hands between Silver and Bronze. Also, it was cold and damp! When I woke up, I did notice that I was lying on one of my hands oddly, and it was a bit sore. Anyway, after a few hours of uncomfortable flight, we discovered an unpopulated island with a cave. Upon landing and entering the cave, we...discovered the mythical legendary sandwich. It was right there. So we quartered it into four and ate it. It was okay. And that's how the dream ended: four people hanging out in a cave, eating a pretty average sandwich. It was cheese, onions, mayo, lettuce, and onions on sourdough bread. I have no idea where any of that came from! And that's why I haven't been posting these lately. If you found this one unsatisfying, imagine how unsatisfying all the ones I haven't shared have been.

A lesser known Mastodon pro tip:

Want to mute a conversation, but the mute conversation button isn't appearing on the post?

The only way you can mute a conversation is on a post you have made in the conversation.

But the secret part - Say you want to mute it without actually participating in the conversation:

Reply to a post, set the visibility to "Private Mention", remove everyone's username from the post. Post it.

Then you can click "mute conversation" on THAT post, and it silently mutes you from the conversation.

Leak confirms OpenAI is preparing ads on ChatGPT for public roll out as it has around 1 billion users with all sorts of personal data.

So, after stealing data from all books, artists, source repos, Wikipedia, Forum posts, & everything else created voluntarily by humans, it is now being sold back to the highest bidder with all your personal data Remember, they are also asking for government IDs & burning all plants resources they come with Ads. such a big idea!

These ads are one thing, but the real danger here is the complete take over of independent web and resources like Wikipedia, forums, blogs, and other stuff. They are doing "intelligence steering," guiding users toward sponsored answers and other "truths" and "facts," and that is what is scary. So, if big bro wants to censor certain topics related to public health or historical facts, it can now be done with just 3/4 apps. Because there is no independent web left. This is a wet dream for them

Anyone interested in #Pixel6a with #GrapheneOS pre-installed? I'm selling mine for 2500 CZK (€100) + shipping.

If you'd like to try GrapheneOS on something cheaper before committing to it with a more expensive phone, this is a great option. It's what I did and happily used the phone for almost a year. It has a surprisingly good camera for the price.

@rlounsbury I usually use high-end phones, but it was not a problem for me to use Pixel 6a for almost a year. GOS is fast on it, the battery life is fairly good. I was surprised by the camera. It makes better pictures than my previous phone (Galaxy S22). What limited me a bit is that 6GB of memory isn't much for Android these days. When I did heavy multitasking, apps sometimes suspended instead of staying in the memory.

Saturday.

Life is marching on here, although the baby is still all-consuming. I've not been into my home office for longer than 40 seconds since he was born and only now am I sat with a computer here because he's gone to sleep. I spent 3 hours with him strapped to rather than being physically carried by me today, which is small progress.

Still, he's only 8 weeks old today. The landscape will shift again when I *have* to go back to work, when he can sit himself up and so on.

We had to buy a new dishwasher as our faithful one of 10 years died without notice. We're also planning a weekend trip to Malta with the mother-in-law for some Christmas market exploration, which will knock christmas shopping time even further, like the baby's not already done that! It's important to us that we maintain as much of what we've done previously over the holiday season for our older child.

I did get an early Christmas present though; some air pods so I can use my phone less wiredly. It'll be handy for traveling.

That #Framework laptop turned out far less durable than I hoped for. After less than two years the battery is swollen and damaged the keyboard in the process. I suspect that a major contributing factor were serious heat issues of this laptop which according to my brief search are “normal.” There are also a few minor defects.

I’m far less inclined to spend more money on Framework hardware now than before they declared their “we don’t do politics” stance. Still, it’s far too early to replace this laptop, so I guess I’m ordering replacements. Luckily, repairing is trivial.

Still: how do I prevent these issues from reoccurring? I guess I’m looking into ways of throttling that CPU on Linux…

Mastodon/Fediverse has trained me so well with the ubiquitous Alt text that whenever I'm outside it and look at something I can't make out all the details of, I attempt to read the Alt text, find it doesn't exist, get annoyed, and then have a sort of reality readjustment when I have to remember they're not actually ubiquitous and available elsewhere.
...And I still can't make sense of what I'm looking at!
