@TheCube Does the stuttering still occur when recording the MAME output to a WAV file? To enable this functionality, simply add the -wavwrite switch to the MAME command line arguments followed by the output filename.
in reply to Jake Gross

No, Control C in the command prompt window. I don't have a Scroll Lock key.

@TheCube is a laptop much of a barrier to using old dos stuff? I only ever used it on desktop.

As Its CPU Scandal Deepens, Intel Plans to Cut Thousands of Jobs gizmodo.com/as-its-cpu-scandal…

Zvonimir Stanecic reshared this.

in reply to victor tsaran

@vick21 I'll be very curious to see if it includes cuts in their foundry business, which is what they're trying to pivot to. As I read: "The company may struggle to compete with Nvidia in AI chip production, but if it can build sufficiently advanced factories and offer Nvidia attractive manufacturing solutions, it may no longer need to compete directly with Nvidia." So stock price may be a bit bullish on this hope but they'll (Intel) have to act quickly.
in reply to Tamas G

Interesting perspective. I mean, the stock price already gave way since then, and quite significantly so, probably in view of the latest news. But still, seems like a strong brand like Intel isn’t going to leave the stage so swiftly!

The first public working draft of the EBraille spec is available! It is primarily meant for organizations that develop software that will read or write eBraille files. eBraille uses an EPUB 3-compatible file set based on the Open Web Platform — using technologies such as XHTML and CSS — to encode braille in semantically enhanced markup and allow it to adapt to the different capabilities of braille reading devices. The file set is designed for both packaged distribution to end users and deployment to the web for online and downloadable reading.

they reference using an ISBN as a unique identifier. I've never seen a Braille document with an ISBN, though. Does this mean you're supposed to use a unique ISBN of a source document translated into Braille, does anyone know?
in reply to Sean Randall

we've been using BRF files since the 1980's. I wonder if eBraille will have that. Can't see it, personally. Probably going to end up being another DAISY
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo Yes, from some long time ago, braille books and newspapers have isbn or issn

“Study Finds Consumers Are Actively Turned Off by Products That Use AI”

futurism.com/the-byte/study-co…

> When AI is mentioned, it tends to lower emotional trust, which in turn decreases purchase intentions

Like I've been saying, we don't need the term "slop". Consumers have decided that "AI" in its entirety is bullshit. And, honestly, they’re right.

This is depressing from the RNIB, the Technology for Life team is to be reduced and merged with another department as part of a 6 month review on spending. I get that savings have to be made and all charities are stretched but surely access to assistance with tech issues through our national charity ought to be protected. I know there are several other orgs in the UK that we can use but as a newly blind person I turned to RNIB as a trusted source of help and this change is worrying. Plus, as far as I know the TFL team is mostly staffed by blind and partially sighted people who’re now faced with losing their jobs - bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0021hd7…
in reply to Sarah Matthews

It is a bit worrying. I'm all for technology being just one SLAT of the sight-loss advice team, that makes sense. But technology is the most empowering and transformative tool we have, as B/vI people. If our national charity can't see that, then they've probably got bigger problems

I completely agree AND would add that I don’t use the term “African-American” because it’s ROOTED in US supremacy which ignores that there are in fact 3 Americas: North, Central, AND South

The use of this term facilitates the dehumanization of other Black and brown folx

We're thrilled to share details about our fellowship pilot program. Launching in Q4 2024, this new initiative aims to address a critical challenge in the open source ecosystem: supporting the dedicated individuals who keep our digital infrastructure running.

I come from a business / digital background, so digital accessibility has always been big on my radar. When I started in science a few years back, I was very surprised to see that arXiv - a service that allows scientists to put their pre-prints (papers before peer review) was not accessible.

This meant that all science papers that were open access (away from journal subscriptions) were only available as PDFs - which means people with digital accessibility needs could not access them.

Access to science should be open to everyone (the pandemic showed us how important this is), and whilst there is a need for papers to undergo the formal peer-review process, that does not mean we can't adhere to global digital accessibility standards.

So, I am extremely glad to see that arXiv is now moving toward digital accessibility, with its second accessibility forum in Sept. 2024. They've also been moving to make papers in HTML format (instead of PDFs only) which adheres to these standards.

If you are interested in accessibility and science, you might consider attending this forum. It's free to all and only requires remote participation.

@miki yeah but many different types of audiences use arXiv, not just scientists or people who have training in LaTeX. Teachers, students, early career researchers, journalists, etc. all all different users of the service.

I'm not saying better accessibility shouldn't be implemented, merely that it's one accessibility option that they already offer while nobody else does.

thank you so much for posting this. Is the certification process also covered in the training materials? I didn’t see that particular section in the description on the website.
in reply to Morgan Pimentel

@morganlynn1992 There is a mention of it in the back of the module, but they are not intrinsically linked - IE we created the training material first and it is designed to teach you what you need to know to be efficient with NVDA. Then we created the certification - and although it is based on the concepts presented in Basic Training, it is not required - ie you could pass the exam based on what is in the user guide and other places

I learned about secure software development on the job, but like ethical computing (which I've talked about before), this should also be included in formal education. Because of the current threat models, topics like security by design and zero-trust frameworks are critical when developing Internet systems. linuxfoundation.org/press/linu…
