We're hoping to address the playback issues (jumping back/forward when streaming) in the upcoming release. Clearly our previous attempts at fixing it didn't work.

sqlitebrowser.org/

Does @AntennaPod offer the ability to send a #podcast or podcast episode to someone who also uses #AntennaPod, so that it opens directly in the app? 🤔
in reply to ıpuɐɯznʞ

Podcast: yes (if they have the app installed). Episode: not yet (but we hope to in the future)

Well, if you've ever wondered why Unix systems have both /bin and /usr/bin, and why users are under /home and not the logically-named /usr, here's your answer:

@kevinctofel Worked at Bell Labs in 1980’s, we ran Unix on a VAX 11/780 so no need for directory separation, but our target machine was a Motorola 68000 workstation which required manipulation of the Unix working directory structure to insure it would run wherever we installed it. Wrote the GUI for it to allow telephone system designers to design & display a proposed trunk system for wired dial phones. The project died with the Bell breakup, but was fun to work on at the time 🙂

DeltaTouch 1.6.0 is out, finally bringing basic Webxdc support as well as bugfixes and minor improvements 🎉

Many Webxdc apps just work already.

Some apps like Webxdc Store (via xstore@testrun.org) need stuff that's not there yet (add apps as file attachments for now). For a few others, touch input isn't working (e.g., ChessBoard). Will tackle that in the next months.

Webxdc support in DeltaTouch is generously funded by @nlnet / @NGIZero.

Well, the Hacker News website now has an annoying change when used with the #NVDASR screen reader. It reads the following for the upvote link: "vote id=41382699&how=up&auth=7…"

Have you written to them about it? And did you get a response? Let us know if you'd like backup advocating for change

in reply to Trending Stocks 📈

Is there any chance we can encourage you to trend #NVIDIA when that's the company you mean, please? I know what their NASDAQ handle is, but #NVDA is much more widely known as the name of the screen reader we make and the #NVDA hashtag is very widely used for the screen reader. It will save both our communities polluting each other's feeds. If you'd like to find out more about the screen reader, our website is nvaccess.org/ - Thank you!
in reply to NV Access

I know, we had this conversation just the other day, but using approriate hashtags for the community you are talking to is still important so I'll keep banging on about it :) You aren't reaching finance people with that hashtag, you are reaching accessibility / blind / screen reader using people.

It boggles my brain that in 2024, you have to call Aira on the telephone to subscribe to a plan and provide credit card details. Isn't this like... a prime example of an online system being a far more efficient and convenient experience?
in reply to Jamie Teh

Not to mention the questionable security issues connected with someone taking down your credit card information over the phone.

Have just made a phone call with a contact at the Austrian hacker event #Hackmas - me on my PC using a standard SIP softphone, him over there at an Austrian castle using an equally standard DECT compatible cordless phone. Pity I couldn't come this year but the next one is definitely mine. The sessions lineup looks interesting too, especially that mobile emulation with Retroarch has recently become accessible. Meanwhile the Do It Blind group is spreading accessibility love. If you're there and would like to chat with an outsider, I'm callable at 4801. If you've got no idea what I am on about, feel free to check the official site: hack-mas.at/

It's interesting to me, the evolution of accessible dialogs on the web.
These days, more and more cookie consent banners feel like they have at least some degree of keyboard focus for the dialog built-in. Whether autofocusing the dialog region or doing that along with restricting focus to the dialog content (and if they've done the homework, marking content underneath as inert or hidden.)
I would say in this way the web is improving.

So Applevis is being revived. Apparently, the website has been acquired by BeMyEyes. Am I the only one feeling a little... apprehensive? I'm happy the resources will still be around, but something about this doesn't sit right with me and I'm not sure what it is.
in reply to Jesse

I think the editorial team staying independent gives me hope the site won't go down or become too corporate/ perhaps advertisement heavy or something. To me it's a better outcome than Voicedream's, for example, and I suppose it creates two jobs and a new org inside their company, so only time will tell how they manage that or if the those doing so keep that independence alive.

in reply to Tamas G

@Tamasg Yes, I really wish people would just let things play out instead of being worried about things that haven’t happened and may not. I’m just glad that it won’t be going down and will be reopening in time for iOS 18’s release!
in reply to Jesse

I'm not at all apprehensive. It is a pairing that I didn't expect, however, and I'm not certain how AppleVis fits into what I thought was the mission and vision of Be My Eyes. That being said, I'm thrilled that it will continue.

what are some problems you've run into with filenames in the terminal?

so far I have:

- operating on filenames that start with `-` is hard
- spaces in filenames
- accidentally creating files named with special shell characters (~, *, ?)
- maybe non-ASCII / emoji filenames? (would love specific examples)
- (on Mac OS) filenames with uppercase letters can get weird sometimes (would love specific examples!)

what am I missing? (only problems related to filenames please)

in reply to Julia Evans

I just discovered this one: I have an EFI System Partition, which has to be a FAT32 filesystem on my Linux installation. It contains the efi/efi/Linux subdirectory. "cd /efi/efi/linux" matches case-insensitively, but tab completing on "/efi/efi/l" doesn't - it has to be an uppercase "L" for the tab completion to work - presumably all working as designed, but it confused me a little. Apologies in advance if this really belongs in your "directories" category.

in reply to Gorgeous Killer

Oh, that's good to know - maybe I should continue watching Clone Wars. I made it about halfway through the first season and then got distracted with something else.

I LOVED Andor. Curiously enough, a teenager friend doesn't want to watch it because there are no light sabers 🤷 He loved Obi-Wan, and I thought it was pretty crappy.

in reply to Federico Mena Quintero

@federicomena It’s a long series but worth it because it talks about the effects of Jedi dogma on the Jedi and the populations they engage. It gets pretty intense in some spots, so be prepared.

That’s the kind of people Disney wants to watch their shows. I’m surprised we got Andor of The Acolyte because the usual M.O. of Disney is to appeal to the lowest common denominator rather than quality storytelling.

It’s disappointing a company of that size can’t seem to figure out how to do both, but it’s a corporate entity at the end of the day.
