This episode of the Democracy Paradox podcast offers insight into "ungoverning", attempts to undermine the administrative state in pursuit of authoritarian concentrations of power that contribute to democratic backsliding.

Let's try this again.

This is the 60 Minutes segment on CECOT that got pulled in the US, but aired and airs in Canada, and is, at this moment, watchable here:

Could you also re-create the Hackney redirect handler MR that got lost in the revert? All it needs fixed is a |> URI.to_string() appended to the end of the absolute redirect function after URI.merge.

It will also probably have a merge conflict to develop from the URI encoding changes, so here's what I've been running for 2 months for reference: git.fluffytail.org/phnt/plerom…

@BorrisInABox 2006 was the first Christmas we had in lutruwita after moving from Canberra... it was a pretty shite day there too. The highlight was watching a bloke in a wetsuit swim out to the Sandy Bay pontoon pushing a floating esky. He stood on the pontoon and cracked a beer. It was like 10 degrees and overcast... BOM records say it was between -1.8 and 1.7 degrees on the top of My Wellington/ kunanyi that day.

@Wren Updated github.com/BasementCat/fruitst…, turned out I forgot to re-add deep_sleep after testing so my battery life was atrocious. This should be better now :)

They released newer versions of these displays, but oh well, this still works fine :)

Still using the #Fruitstand weather plugin daily, it's great :)

Did you know that #Abbott caused the deaths of seven diabetics this year?

Some of Abbott's continuous glucose monitors (ironically named the #FreeStyle #Libre 3 Plus) incorrectly reported low blood sugar — a grave & dangerous error for insulin-dependent #diabetes. I fortunately wasn't injured, but Abbott's refusal to allow public examination the technical details of their devices is tantamount to a cover-up.

Did some work on a new high quality #nvda#tts engine for 2026. Unfortunately, I can’t get indexing to work. Even with AI. Help? Someone? It builds with scons. GitHub - fastfinge/supertonic-nvda: supertonic for nvda github.com/fastfinge/supertonic-nvda

Well, let me say that it sounds awesome! I really like it for its clarity of voices and natural intonation. But it has huge pauses with NVDA even when commas are encountered. And initial syllables, vowels or consonants are oftentimes missed, and it becomes more evident as we increase the speech rate or speech quality. So 8:34 AM may be announced as 34 AM. Should I open issues on Github? I mean is this something you may want to improve?

Kynttelikkö on vieläkin nähtävillä Utön hautausmaan keskellä olevassa rukoushuoneessa.

Säästin tarinan loppuun aikaamme sopivan yksityiskohdan, jonka kuulin tapahtumista vasta pari vuotta sitten.

When JAWS goes crazy!
Both my work desktop and my laptop have JAWS 2026, with the company covering the licenses. But after updating my laptop to the December build of JAWS 2026 a couple of days ago, I started getting this awful error: “cannot load VCSPEECH.JLS.”
Repairing JAWS or even uninstalling and reinstalling it doesn’t fix anything.
I did some online research, and people who ran into the same problem say the only solution is reinstalling Windows 11. Seriously? That’s absolutely ridiculous and completely unacceptable.
Luckily, NVDA is my main screen reader. I’m honestly fed up with trying to troubleshoot this issue. I’m even considering ditching JAWS entirely at work, despite the fact that it still performs better in some environments and scenarios.

@miki @FreakyFwoof Oh, there are definitely authors and historical figures I would love to sit down and chat with, but this kind of fetishizing or lusting after celebrities based on either physical appearance or the way they sound just has never been something I've understood. I'm interested in peoples thought processes and life experiences and that's what really makes me want to get to know them more.

I'm playing around with all three United States mobile carriers in my parents' neighborhood in central North Carolina.

Verizon and T-Mobile both do very well inside city limits, and are about neck and neck in this neighborhood in particular. Good, but not great.
AT&T, in the immediate neighborhood, is the worse performer in terms of signal and speed.

T-Mobile is faster than Verizon in some places, but drops out and doesn't exist at all in others where both AT&T and Verizon still work.

I guess it's Xmas Eve. Please note, it's okay to feel other emotions at this time, besides utter glee and happiness. Xmas is difficult for most of us. It's never really been my happiest time of the year... and I'm okay with that. For me, what helps is talking to people on the phone and stuff.. Heck, I spent Xmas on my own one year and it was glorious! Another year, friends forced me to go to a local Chinese restaurant and man, the food was good. Then we went to a few pubs and I was amazed at how many people were out, just to hang out with other people. Anyway, just remember that if you are feeling alone, that you are not. Especially if you're on Mastodon.

> Write a blog post, tell TWIM, tell the world, tell us what we can improve

Well, I can tell you what improvements I would like to see from a perspective of a person who has been trying to write some maubot plugins.

I'd welcome improvements to HTML rendering in messages in all clients, because right now literally every client has some issues in this area and this makes it a pain in the ass to create message layouts that look good. Among those problems are incorrect <table> element rendering, missing newlines after some tags, <details> tag not working at all, issues displaying or , weird behavior around inline <img> tags or not displaying them at all, and many more, in every client there are different ones. Oh, and it would be nice to get some control of column width in <table>, pretty please. It's not in the spec, but would be great to have it. Element Desktop has the most correct implementation of all this but it's also not without problems. Why is this important to me? Because I want to create messages like the one on the screenshots I attached (made in Cinny), something similar to Discord embeds. The subset of HTML at our disposal is already very limited, so it's even more annoying when it doesn't work the way it should.

Other than that, I would appreciate fixing spoiler support in Element. Right now it's half-assed on desktop, and nonexistent in Element X. Have you ever tried to discuss movies or books without properly working spoiler tags? I'd rather not discuss them at all.

in reply to Korba

@korba well, we can work with that. the original choice of HTML for rich text in Matrix was to give us the flexibility for pixel-perfect copy-paste in future, but then we fell down a rabbithole of dealing with Markdown dialects and haven't got back to figuring out how to do richer text while sanitising styling against attacks. Have you already filed a bug for this somewhere ooi?

Friend: I don't know what to do!

Me: (I explain what he needs to do.)

Friend: That sounds like just what I need. I'm going to do that!

(a week later)

Me: How did it go?

Friend: Oh that? I didn't do it.

Me: Why not?

Friend: I don't know. I just didn't.

Me: Okay. Will you try again?

Friend: Probably not.

Me: So you'll just ignore the problem then?

Friend: Oh no. It's still a problem.

Me: But I gave you the solution.

Friend: And a great solution it was.

Me: And yet...

Friend: Exactly
