Why would you use AI to lookup up something as basic and safety critical as tides? How have people lost the capability of just using a search engine? I don’t understand why so many people want to be spoon fed by a chat bot spouting bollocks.

Just insane, stupid, and risky as hell.

Use reputable sources for critical information. Weather and tide information are a solved problem. (Weather is not always perfect!)

I think my favourite software purchase of 2025 was a lifetime license for AdGuard. I mean, yes, I could have used one of my Raspberry Pi systems to do something similar, but, it literally took me 5 minutes to setup, while a Raspberry Pi configuration would have taken me more and then I'd have to baby it. Besides, it appealed to my inherent laziness and now I can read articles without all the ad fluff.

@BorrisInABox It's also worth noting that Pihole is a bit misleading as to the name. I think the last time I used it on an actual pi was in 2019. I now use it on a VM sitting on one of my desktops. I know I can use docker, I'm just too lazy. The VM doesn't have to be looked after, even if the underlying hardware blows up for some reason, I just put the backup on some other thing and am satisfied. That hasn't happened yet.

Not so happy. Financially, 2025 was probably the worst year I had since I started translating for a living. I lost most of my long time clients - retirement, sickness etc. - and new ones are hard to find.

Once all is up and running, SSL certificates and warnings turn into a no-issue in your home network. I've done that a few months ago and have not thought about them once since then.

I’ll revisit the dns challenge when letsencrypt adds the static entry option DNS-PERSIST-01 [1]. Right now you need to dynamically update dns for this to work.

These challenges are why we are working with our partners at the CA/Browser Forum and IETF to standardize a new validation method called DNS-PERSIST-01. The key advantage of this new method is that the DNS TXT entry used to demonstrate control does not have to change every renewal. This means you can set up the DNS entry once and begin automatically renewing certificates without needing a way to automatically update DNS. This should allow even more people to automate their certificate renewals. It will also reduce reliance on authorization reuse, since the DNS records can stay unchanged without any further ACME client involvement. We expect DNS-PERSIST-01 to be available in 2026, and will have more to announce soon.

Decreasing Certificate Lifetimes to 45 Days

Let’s Encrypt will be reducing the validity period of the certificates we issue. We currently issue certificates valid for 90 days, which will be cut in half to 45 days by 2028.

Lately I have noticed that when you purchase a ticket you don’t get a static PDF/PNG anymore.

Increasingly often, you get a .pkpass file, which is supposed to be opened in wallet apps (like Google Wallet or any 3rd-party wallet app).

Since I don’t like to share information about the events I attend with strangers on the Internet, I have decided to take a closer look at these .pkpass files.

They are just zip files that contain a background image, an icon and a pass.json with the actual information about the ticket. Nothing that can’t be handled by a script rather than a 3rd-party 100 MB mobile app.

I have thus put together a simple #shell script that does exactly that.

I just released Christmas Dash 1.0.1 for Linux. I'll be releasing the Windows version in a minute here, but this one is a test build. It adds a speech interrupt setting, as that is a very important setting for Linux users. Please tell me if it works (works for me but that's because I'm using WSL), and if it doesn't, reach out.

So just tested it out in WSL. Strangely enough, I'm not experiencing this weird so-called upload score bug, I managed to upload just fine. With a terrible score mind you, since it was for testing purposes, but definitely works. Perhaps I must have fixed something without knowing, or it's Python being Python as usual. I'll keep looking into it, but for now I'll push what I have.

Here's the christmas question of the day. Do you believe that the 12 days of christmas compounds or just lists the things you get as a reminder? Watched some christmas movie I had never heard of with Eddie murphy in it called Candy Cane Lane where this dude signs a contract with an elf gone bad (think sell your soul to the devil). Elf tells him that he needs the five golden rings or he'll turn into an ornament but gets him on a technicality by saying nope, you really need 40 rings because 5 golden rings appears 8 times in the song. Last week, I threw together Syntherceptor, a SAPI5 synthesiser which speaks using NVDA. This is useful for apps like Komplete Kontrol, Surge, etc. which use SAPI5 but you'd prefer the speech output to happen using your NVDA synthesiser and settings. This also prevents voices from speaking over each other, allows you to interrupt speech with a key press, etc. There is an existing project called NVDASapi which already does this, but we can't seem to identify or contact its developer, it isn't open source, it doesn't interrupt speech when the app requests it and it's a bit tricky to install. That said, Syntherceptor is very early in development, so you may wish to tread carefully. If it crashes, it'll probably crash the app you're using, so save your work regularly, though I haven't seen that happen yet. syntherceptor.jantrid.net/
