For most people familiar with what open source means, what Bose did is not open source in any manner.

Rok 2026 ukaze, jak je to udrzitelne. Kod v modulech je v podstate "write once, edit never". Kdyz je neco potreba, cele se to prepisuje. A API kazdeho modulu hlidaji agenti, aby se pouzivalo a neduplikovala se funkcionalita.

Ted si asi tri dny hraju se ciste agentnim projektem. Rozrostl se mimo hromady balastu na 10 stabilnich modulu. Pri kazdem implementovanem "ticketu" kontroluji AI agenti QA tech modulu.
Pouzivaji se v novem kodu spravne. Neduplikuje se jejich funkcionalita. Je potreba nejaky modul upravit => je jeho API upravene optimalne.
Samotna agentni kontrola modulu (~22k radku Rust kodu) sezere 100% limitu nejvyssiho tarifu Claude Code.
Ich hab gestern meine Chefin um ein Gespräch gebeten, das heute stattfand. Hätte zum Arzt gehen können ohne was zu sagen, aber sie ist nett und ich wollte es erklären, weil ich davon ausgehe, dass der Arzt mich länger rausnehmen wird. Drei Wochen Urlaub haben nicht ansatzweise ausgereicht, um meine Nerven wieder zu richten, ich hätte eigentlich vorher schon zum Arzt gemusst. Und ich bin jetzt stolz auf mich und dokumentiere morgen noch Zeug im Homeoffice und geh am Freitag zum Arzt.
Das wird alles werden! Ich weiß, ist leicht gesagt und noch leichter geschrieben. Aber es klingt so, als würdest du die richtigen Schritte gehen. Wenn du magst, fühl dich gedrückt. Jedenfalls drücke ich alle Daumen, die ich finden kann!
@WestphalDenn Danke ❤️ Es kostet mich so viel Überwindung. Ich bin schlecht darin die Kontrolle abzugeben. Aber die Energie reicht nicht mehr dafür. Also muss es sein.
Vielleicht bekommst du so Mittelfristig etwas mehr Kontrolle. Auch wenn manche Wege verflucht schwer sind, lohnt es gerade, diese Wege zu gehen.
Nicht unbedingt vergleichbar. Aber ich bin zum Beispiel rückblickend sehr froh, mir im Burnout therapeutische Hilfe gesucht zu haben, obwohl ich davor irrsinnig viel Angst hatte. Vielleicht wird es bei dir ähnlich, wenn du in einiger Zeit an heute zurück denkst.
@WestphalDenn Das ist absolut vergleichbar! Nur dass es nicht ein arbeitsbedingter Burnout ist, sondern ein gesamtsituationsbedingter, wenn man das so sagen kann. Dafür gibt's halt keine Diagnose im ICD... Diese massive Überlastung aufgrund von permanentem Maskieren, um angepasst zu sein und Erwartungen zu erfüllen umfasst eben nicht nur den Beruf, sondern das ganze Leben. Schon fast 42 Jahre lang.
@WestphalDenn Mit der Diagnose kam jetzt schrittweise das Nicht-Mehr-Können, teils völlig unterbewusst und automatisch. Und es gibt kein Zurück, ich kann es nicht ungeschehen machen oder so tun als hätte es das nicht gegeben oder so. All meine Strategien funktionieren gerade nicht mehr. Ich war ja früher schon in Therapie, wegen Depressionen (rückblickend war das auch wegen unerkanntem AuDHS), und ich kann nur hoffen, dass die jetzt passende Diagnose auch passende Therapie mit sich bringt...
Schon beim lesen merkt man, welche unglaubliche Anstrengung das sein muss. So tun als wäre nichts passiert geht nicht mehr. Vielleicht kann es dadurch besser werden. Vor allem besser und leichter für dich. Ich wünsche es dir sehr! Schau mal hier in die Kommentare. Da sind einige liebe Menschen, die die Daumen drücken. Und wir sind da sicherlich nicht die einzigen. Vielleicht kannst du daraus ein bisschen Kraft schöpfen.

In all the time I've had my Zoom H5 Studio, I've really never given it a good SPL tolerance test. So, today, I went out to the nearby train tracks, and recorded two trains, both with the includec X/Y microphones, and a pair of Micboosters Clippy Pro. The Clippy Pros lived up to their name, and the recording I got from them was basically unusable distorted bad. Next time, I'll try turning the pads on the inputs and see if it's the mics or the recorder that didn't like things.
Anyway, here's one of the two trains I managed to capture. This one is fast and short. I didn't use any processing, but I did ride the gain a little bit to make it a little easier to deal with the wide dynamic range. If anyone wants the raw, let me know.
For best affect, play it loud through something with lots of range.

The first train recording peaked at +29dB, while the second peaked at +33dB relative to whatever level was set on my recorder's mixer. Yay 32-bit float, or something.
@mcourcel @dodecahedron There's a really long one that passes through about 1.5 hours after those were recorded, but I wasn't where they were at the time.
@dodecahedron I used to have an amazing one that I recorded way back in the 80s on an old ghetto blaster. It was in stereo and all that. Probably would sound like crap today, but so much fun to play on my dad's home system.
@tardis It's all about the relative volume. Huge dynamic range. The raw is even wider than that. I could compress the dynamics, which would break things. I was pretty close. The peaks on both were so high that they were turned down by over 30 DB when it normalized. Such as the way of high resolution recording.
Hmm, I don't know, I just know it sounded so sooo quiet, like, over normalised. I don't know how you hear it, but I needed 100% on headphones to hear it. Haha.
@tardis Well, it does peak at 0dBFS. The average is relatively low. But like I said, it's all relative to itself. IN life, the bit where the train passes right in front is also much louder than everything else.
Every day I see some horrifying thing (today it's ICE killing someone in Minneapolis) and then I have to look at my work computer like "okay let's review this cute little design here" like nothing is happening.

Huh. I'm a bit conflicted on how to handle Java backends for Prism like android. Do I create my own `JavaVM*`? Or do I allow people to pass in a `JNIEnv*`, which would also require a C API extension? Not really sure what to do... I want to avoid ABI breaks at all but
So my initial thoughts here are that, similar to miniaudio's config/init pattern, an optional structure could be passed into prism_init or I guess maybe prism_registry_create/create_best that could include any extra options that would help the system along? A user could pass in a JNI env here to enable the android backend, it could open you up to other things like letting user specify lists of allowed or disallowed backends / other config to customize the system to their liking, and it would have the advantage that you could reserve some bytes in the structure / make it have a version field so that you could add at least some new settings to it without breaking your ABI. This library looks cool!
@samtupy Thanks, for the JNIEnv stuff I was going to add something like prism_set_jni_env or something. Well, assuming I could, you know, figure out how I'm going to do Java backends. Idk if that's the best approach though... I'm glad you at least like what I have so far though
@samtupy No idea how exactly I'm going to do the Java backends though... That's going to be a pain. The pain isn't even the linking to Java or anything, but more the JNI stuff...
@samtupy I wish, but no. There's this other tool called Scapix which lets me do that. But, of course, the dev had to license all of it under their own custom license which I'm not even sure is enforceable. But then of course they added insult to injury when I reached out kindly asking them to expand on whether the terms of their license extended to things like generated code, or the tool you run to generate the code, or what, because the license was very vague about that
Interesting, I thought you just had to create an interface contract for the methods you want and use the JNI's findClass method or what have you like when you did exceptions in NVGT with raw JNI, even creating a StringBuilder?
@samtupy I might be able to get that to work? The way you do it with Djinni is you make an interface in Djinni IDL, generate code via djinni, dump that code into your app, implement the interface in Java and then call it from C++. JNI is never, ever fun no matter how you do it, sadly
Why do you have to implement an interface in java, can you not just make a contract definition that binds to the already existing interface that the tts library provides?
@samtupy Mainly because Djinni generates an interface by default. Well, an abstract class, though you can tell it to do an interface. You can't trivially call Android libraries from C++ because Android uses a ton of Java features that JNI on it's own struggles to express like finalizers and all that
@samtupy I could try Djinnie, which would make part of it perhaps a bit easier but that would still need the `JNIEnv*` and I'd still have to add Gradle for the java parts. Ugh
@samtupy Right, so I was thinking of a context-wide option to provide a JNIEnv or NSWindow? That would be passed down to the backend which would use it as it sees fit? Or I could do the config thing, that would work too. I just don't want to over-complicate the API too much
I think one global config structure you could optionally pass to the library's init function would not be too much over complication. This would allow me to enumerate the configuration structure and see what options I can set very quickly by looking at it's members. A function to create a config structure preset to sane defaults would be a good idea though.
@Bri Normally I would agree. But this will break spectacularly on Android, I think? From what I remember, Android passes it's own `JNIEnv*` and you just have to deal with it, but, Idk, I might not know something lol
@Bri And I also need to write bindings. Python is trivial, can just throw some cffi around and boom. I'm not entirely certain how to tackle others. But I'm open to contribs so I might write a Python one and then if I can figure it out a .NET one and let others contribute other bindings? 🤔

@ltning I'm the guy that maintains it on FreeBSD. I converted their pyinfra stuff to Chef so it's not hardcoded to Debian, provide custom FreeBSD packages where needed, and patched their python code as necessary (upstreaming changes, gap is closing)

@ltning no, I don't think it will. You really really don't want to install the chef client from ports/packages. You want it to be fully isolated from the OS so if packages/libraries break, it doesn't break Ruby/Chef and Chef can potentially still run/repair things
@feld I think we have diametrically opposite preferences for how to manage things. I find that having stuff install outside of /usr/local and without using pkg or ports is generally a bad idea. If I need stuff from pip/npm/whatnot, it should be installed locally to a given user, not globally like suggested here. My biggest concern is the lack of maintainability.
But I'll see if I can give this a go, somehow. There's nothing in this bundle that, apart from some custom-built packages, should need anything special, so converting to a base-package approach should be mostly a matter of "getting it done".. :)
@ltning you can't have the risk of your OS packages doing something that breaks your automation tools. One bad library update and Ruby breaks and now you can't manage your fleet of servers? that would be insane and it's why they do these "Omnibus" deployments
@mischievoustomato @ltning for certain automation/monitoring tools you either have to break the unix mantra of "everything is shared, only one copy of stuff installed" or build static binaries
that's another reason why Go got so popular -- it avoids this mess by producing mostly static binaries
@mischievoustomato @feld I don't quite understand this concern. If stuff is broken in the OS package repo then you're screwed anyway and I certainly wouldn't trust a config mgmt tool to "fix" anything. But I'm sure there are pains I have not experienced, so what do I know ;)
And regardless of all this: chatrelay depending on custom patches to upstream software is bad enough; that it seems hard-to-impossible to manage it using standard tools (even on the recommended platform) seems to me to be unfortunate. Each individual part looks fairly straight-forward from a cursory glance..
All that said: @feld - thank you for making the effort. You've made it much easier for me to understand how it all works, and potentially getting my own relay off the ground.

It's actually zero. The only patch they have is a dovecot change that removes an unnecessary sleep/debounce that slows down message notification/delivery by 500ms
everything else is just the specialized configuration and some custom python (later: rust) services that filter emails, lua scripts for dovecot and opendkim.

Give me a targeted error or problem and I can probably figure it out.
Ask me to build/design something from scratch and even though I have a lot of ideas in my head about the right way to do things because I try to pay attention to best practices, security, performance and have a pretty wide range of knowledge... I'm more likely than not to produce an amateurish pile of garbage
If someone else provided me with a complete technical design to follow of how it should work, there's a much better chance I can be successful or at least not waste so much time

it's a change of default that will likely come with a move of the existing switch from the tweaks applications and into the system settings; nothing is getting removed
I can confidently say that there are no plans for removal at any point in time, as much as I personally don't like this feature. The fact that a whole interface was added to Wayland by GNOME developers to simulate the original X11 behaviour should make the same point.

I want to shoutout the @firefoxwebdevs account for *not* ending UX. They are engaging with some pretty heated feedback regarding LLM-related UI and having a genuine dialogue. I may be pretty much on the side of the heated feedback, but I also want to give credit where credit is due.
The End of UX would be to say "we'll design this however we want and you'll just love it” rather than engage. FF isn't doing that, which is commendable!
