I found some more traveling libraries! These are from the Finnish Seafarers' Union from the 1920s and are, I believe, to be brought aboard boats. From (yes I am at work today) Flickr Commons. #libraries #books #finland

If like me, you were a child of the '90s, you might remember "ReBoot" – a pioneering 3D animated kids series created by Vancouver's own Mainframe Entertainment.

These documentarians have gotten a hold of the original, uncompressed digital masters. The problem is, they're in the D-1 format.

In 2024, please switch to Firefox roytanck.com/2023/12/23/in-202… #privacy #security #opensource #unix #linux #macos

This December, if there’s one tech New Year’s resolution I’d encourage you to have, it’s switching to the only remaining ethical web browser, Firefox. According to recent posts on social media, Firefox’s market share is slipping. We should not let that happen. There are two main reasons why switching is important.
A red panda (firefox) resting on a tree branch.Red Panda” by Mathias Appel is marked with CC0 1.0.

1. Privacy

Firefox is the only major browser not built by a company that makes money from advertising and/or selling your personal data. There’s been a lot of talk about websites tracking users using cookies, fingerprinting and other nefarious technologies that hurt your privacy. But owning the browser puts Google, Apple and Microsoft in a position where they don’t even need those tricks. We need to use browsers that are independent, and right now that means Firefox.

2. Browser engine monopoly

Wikipedia lists four browser engines as being “active”. Browser engines are the bits that take a web page’s code and display it on your screen. Ideally, they conform to the official W3C standards, and display all elements as it describes. If that’s the case, web developers can easily write sites that work on all browsers. No proprietary vendor lock-in nonsense, just glorious open standards at work.

It’s happened before

In the early 2000’s, Internet Explorer had a massive 95% market share. This meant that many sites were only developed for use with IE. They’d use experimental features that IE supported, in favor of things from the official HTML standard. This was a very bad situation, which hindered the development of the World Wide Web.

Currenty, Chrome, Safari and Edge all use variations of the closely related Webkit and Blink engines. If we want to avoid another browser engine monopoly, we need to support Firefox, and its “Gecko” engine.

Firefox is actually really good

If Firefox would be a bad browser, I would not recommend you to switch. It’s fast, has a nice user interface, and feels every bit as modern and elegant as its competition. I’ve been using it as my main browser for a couple of years now, on Linux, Windows, MacOS and Android. As a web developer, I usually have at least three browsers open, but when I go look something up on the web, I pick Firefox.

So please, help save the web by using the best browser out there. It’s an easy thing to do, and it makes a big difference.

Donating to my employer for #firefox development. Repeat post.

I often see people wishing that they could donate money to #Firefox Development directly.

One way to do this is to purchase a subscription to Relay, VPN or Pocket! Feel free to think of those subscriptions as donations, but instead of a tax receipt, you get access to a useful service that you can choose to use or not.

Those subscriptions make great gifts, too!

I just want to say how AMAZING I think the strike is, at the Eiffel Tower. Biggest week for the building in YEARS. Huge events planned. Workers said their conditions were unacceptable, and went on strike at the LEAST convenient time for anyone (including them), but that's when a strike gets the most attention! Got it on the BBC newscast!

SFFBookClub December poll

Alright, getting #SFFBookClub back on track. Two new options this month:

Light From Uncommon Stars is from a private toot, so if the recommender wants to make themselves known it's up to them to reply. More info: us.macmillan.com/books/9781250…

Wondrous Journeys in Strange Lands is from @SoniaSulaiman's #ReadPalestinianSpecFic list at soniasulaiman.com/readpalestin… . Book info: simonandschuster.com/books/Won…

As always, the list of previously read titles is at docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d… . And as always, replies to either advocate for one of the options or suggest titles for future months are very welcome.

SFFBookClub February poll & March sequels month

For February: both new options are titles that have been rumoured to have been censored out of the Hugos. I haven't been following that controversy closely enough to know how solid the evidence is, but they both sound interesting anyway so I figured I'd include them: harpercollins.com/products/bab… & xiranjayzhao.com/index.php/boo…

As usual, please vote, and replies to advocate for one of the choices or suggest future picks are always very welcome.

Advance notice for March: that will be the next Sequels Month purely because I have some travel coming up that will make keeping up with a poll more hassle than usual.

We seem to end up doing about one YA title a year, and they're usually a mixture of good and bad lightness. Often a nice break after something very heavy (e.g. this month's pick outside.ofa.dog/book/2743/s/ho… ), but also usually a bit "thin" in character development and/or resolving tensions too easily. Does that sound like your impression of Iron Widow?
in reply to Alien Enemy

SFFBookClub February poll & March sequels month
Yeah, I wouldn't say resolves tensions too easily, maybe, but character motivations are a little thin, a bit stereotyped. Almost like evil archetypes that can't change sometimes. That said, there's also pretty violent stuff, so it's not YA-ish in that regard. Also some of the world-building feels a bit inspired by cartoon conventions, which makes it seem that way to me but that may be a personal bias.

Agreed about this being a good lineup. I was planning to read Babel when it was first released, but it always got bumped for something I was more interested in. Then it was late enough I decided to wait until the Hugo noms were released since I figured it would be included. When it wasn't, I pushed it even further down the list. I have a renewed interest now because it does appear to have been wrongfully disqualified.
Siren Queen has also been on my list for a while. I'm just learning about Iron Window, and I've already read Light from Uncommon Stars. (Note to Eldang: Stars is very heavy on the violins.)

« Je vais poser une question à CanardCanardVasY… C'est bizarre comme nom, quand même… »

Truc rigolo appris aujourd'hui !

music, singing, female voice, lyrics about female attraction
I was reflecting this morning on the lie #music #streaming told those of us who love listening to music, but aren't musicians ourselves. We were told that it would give us access to more varieties of music, and spontaneously introduce us to stuff we might love. Yet, I found more #indie music by mistake on file sharing back in the day than I ever find on Apple Music or Spotify. This is a good example: as a silly teenager, I searched for "pretty girls", and found this song amongst the porn. It says it's buy "The Capricorns". It's not on any of the music streaming services. There is a compressed copy on YouTube, but it only has 200 views. None of the streaming sites would ever have recommended this to me. I don't know who's singing, or anything about the band or song. Odds are I never will. And I kind of treasure that. #AltText was over 1500 characters. It is in this thread. I did my best, but I don't know how to describe music!

I want Firefox to succeed more than ever and I support Mozilla finding better revenue sources than search engine default sales, but I do not support a $7M salary for its CEO.

I canceled my recurring donation to Mozilla because I need that money more than Mozilla’s CEO needs that money.

If there is a direct funding option of developers working on Firefox, I will happily reallocate that money. Send me links.

@ebassi @vincevlo @dekkzz76 @nojhan @louis XULRunner never really lived, tbh (I just picked the last release date as the "death" date in the post above).

I remember being psyched when ephy was ported from gtkmozembed to gtk-webkit, the code became sooo much simpler. But it was before Chrome became the problem it is today (I got my memory backwards, Chrome was released in 2008 while the first Epiphany version using Webkit is from 2009)

Ad 2: Mám to už z filetu bez kůže. A protože to dělám jen z bříšek (prostě uříznu všechno "pod hrudním košem") a ty vysoký části nechávám na řízky, kostiček je minimálně. Prakticky tam nebylo nic, ale s rybou si dáváš pozor pořád. ;-)
