Like, a couple of weeks back it emerged that some of our team had been lifting 2 ton steel sections from incredibly flimsy tie down points because, for some reason, there weren’t adequate lifting points.

Instead of refusing to do the lift until adequate provision was made, the then-production manager told them to use the tie down points. So they did.

They’ve been trained in lifting and slinging, they will have known it wasn’t right, but did it anyway.

I’d share a photo, but apparently I’ve deleted them since I sent them to our general manager, and health and safety manager.

The photo would have shown a piece of 12mm round bar welded across a half circle cut out of the side metal of the piece. The round bar is bent where it was used for lifting, the weld is cracked because of course it fucking is.

Two. Tons.

If one had snapped, the shock load sent through the other three chains would have snapped the remaining ‘lifting’ points.

It also would have seriously damaged the crane. I forget the formula for how much shock would have gone through it, but it would have been the quivalent of more than two tons.

But mostly, it would have landed on one of the barely functioning idiots that agreed to sling the piece that way. The world wouldn’t have lost a truly great thinker, but their mum might have been a little put out.
