Really cool to see the c"" string literal feature stabilized. I wrote the RFC for c"" string literals [1], so I'm very excited to see it reach stable Rust today.

I had nothing to do with its implementation, however. The implementation was done by @beef [2] and quite a few others worked on it too [3]. Thanks all, for making this happen!

Long overdue. Although it’s not mentioned in the suit, I have been advocating about the fact that iOS makes it impossible for alternative screen readers to exist. When Apple neglects quality control in VoiceOver, leaving serious defects for multiple cycles, it puts our careers, education, safety, and utility of the product at risk. see why monopolies aren't healthy? see why stuff like linux and all the tech around it, even new screenreaders for it, have to exist? sure, you may say that no body is interested, that everyone uses windows because that's what the industry wants, and that may be true, but if the chicken and egg problem of linux usage continues, we will soon end up with the same thing regarding windows. Sure, screenreaders can innovate, but at some point, one is limited by the constraints of an OS which doesn't go in the interest of any community, for example see microsoft trying to shuv AI in everything, replacing the applications key even. It's the same as with mastodon and other federated networks, choice has to exist for a healthy market, and more people have to be aware of those choices and actively try them in order for the choices to be relevant.

But I like AI. It’s improved my quality of life, it’s improved my productivity, it’s improved the quality of the service I can provide to my customers as a CEO. And AI itself will improve overtime because as I mentioned in my interview with Microsoft’s Chief Accessibility Officer, it definitely needs to improve.
But sure, choice is great.

Alright folks. After a little time spent with the patched version of the game, I have at last written my article revisiting Spiderman 2. I know some of you wanted to get my thoughts in this format, so here it is. If you have any interest in this topic, please, please read this, as I have done my very best to break down the accessibility discussion around the game, and my own thoughts as well. Enjoy! brandoncole.net/?p=588

Apache Pekko has left the incubator phase and is now a top-level project.

lists.apache.org/thread/grl5h0…

That's great news! Pekko was created as a Fork of Akka 2.6, right after Lightbend chose to pull a bait-and-switch by relicensing Akka to a non-FOSS license.

I have already switched to Pekko a few months ago, it went very smooth, and I am grateful to everybody involved in making this happen.

The value of OSS today?

"from $1.22 billion to $6.22 billion if we were to decide as a society to recreate all widely used OSS on the supply side"

"from $2.59 trillion to $13.18 trillion, if each firm who used an OSS package had to recreate it from scratch"

"5% of programmers are responsible for more than 90% of the value created on the supply- and demand- side"

I discovered a new GPS app called WaveOut recently that I am extremely impressed with. It uses directional sound similar to Soundscape, but instead of having the sound come from the direction of your destination, it creates a turn by turn route, and the sound shows you where the next point on your route is. In addition to GPS, it uses your phone's camera to better determine where you are. I tested it on a route where the directions from Google Maps are inaccurate and hard to follow, since there is a confusing roundabout crossing, places where there's only a sidewalk or grass with no street along side, and some very weird intersections, and I've been using Voice Vista, an improved version of Soundscape, and trying to choose the best path that leads me towards the sound. I was very skeptical that WaveOut would give me better directions, but it was pretty much perfect! When there was an upcoming turn, or when I got slightly off route, it played a sound leading me directly to where I should go, and otherwise it was silent. It led me a slightly different way than I'm use to, but it never gave me inaccurate or misleading directions or made me guess where to go, and it was definitely easier than trying to figure out where to go based on the beacon in Voice Vista and Google Maps directions. The sound also kept up with the direction I was facing better than Voice Vista, and it also seemed to track my location more accurately than other apps. dreamwaves.io
