Pleast boost for reach:
On the subject of Linux phone accessibility, the developer of AT-SPI wrote:
There's a long-standing issue that Joanie filed against at-spi2-core for
touch screen support:
gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/at-spi2…

Ande I haven't taken the time to figure out how best to handle this. I'm
not sure if evdev would do what we need, or we might want to work with the
maintainers of mutter, KWin, etc. to create a protocol for
intercepting/manipulating gestures. We would also need code that can
detect gestures from touch screen presses. NVDA has code that we might be
able to use as a model.

All of this is theoretically on my list of things to do. Of course, help
would be welcome if anyone else was able to take it on.
end quote

For blind people to switch to Linux on phones, we need to use the touch screen. If anyone can help with this, it would allow the blind to take one step closer to being capable of creating our own accessibility, our own environments, in the way that helps us most. See NVDA as a great example of how that goes.

From the Blinux list, my thoughts below the quote:

"Hello to all.

This is partly a (re)introduction and some good news (news for definitely not all, but some) of you.

This message is actually send to two lists, as I have no clue how big intersection of the member lists there are (I suppose huge, but not complete), so sorry for double receiving, you who are in both lists.

And now, with the disclaimers out of the way... I started to be interested in Linux, say ten or twelve years ago (don't remember exactly). Through a set of happy coincidences, I managed to get a job at Red Hat in the desktop team, and because accessibility was in the times of the reorg an important thing, a tools and accessibility team actually was created. It is quite a small team, and the majority of people on it do not have work time to do anything with accessibility (we're maintaining some of the Gnome apps, we do RHEL packaging, testing etc.).

However, I am working on the accessibility related things every day, so don't be afraid to ask something, mention your issues, and such.

Personally, in terms of distributions, I use GNome on Arch (personal laptop) and Fedora (work laptop), so I have the most experience with these setups, but I definitely used Mate, and tried Kde for some time as well.

And, that's it for now. "

So, a small team, that barely has time to do what the team is about. This is really sad. This is what people with disabilities get from one of the biggest Linux companies there is.

One week after we kicked off our year-end fundraiser, we’ve reached 800 #FriendsOfGNOME!

Our goal is a bit more ambitious, though: 1,500 by December 31. Help us out by joining today: donate.gnome.org

If you’ve already joined or are unable to right now, you can still help by sharing this post with friends and colleagues: blogs.gnome.org/foundation/202…

Let's secure the future of GNOME together and enable us to do even more great work next year.

Schleswig-Holstein reports €15M yearly savings by replacing Microsoft 365 with LibreOffice across most government workplaces 💶

About 80% of offices have migrated, with a €9M one-time investment planned for 2026 to finish the shift and strengthen open-source tools 🧩

Today's #FreeSoftwareAdvent is all about XMPP.

Snikket (snikket.org/) is an easy-to-install, and easy-to-administer, XMPP server. It is designed for families and other small groups. The apps for Android and iOS (based on Conversations, I think) are great.

Dino (dino.im/) is my desktop XMPP client of choice.

Profanity (profanity-im.github.io/) is a terminal / console XMPP client, which is incredibly convenient.

Why not have a fun festive project of setting up an XMPP-based chat server for you and your family and friends?

This year brought great improvements to #accessibility in GNOME, including:

• Accessibility from the start on the login screen
• Full accessibility of GNOME Web
• Tons of improvements to Calendar
• Screen reader integration for Notifications
• Configure #Orca screen reader from Settings
• GTK apps integrated w/Windows & macOS accessibility

Help us reach 1,500 #FriendsOfGNOME so we can focus on accessibility even more in 2026!

This year we delivered new Digital Wellbeing features for GNOME including Screen Time history and limits, break reminders for movement and eye health, and improved parental controls with Screen Time integration.

This work was coordinated by the GNOME Foundation thanks to a grant from Endless, and implemented by valued community developers @pwithnall and @ignapk with support from design team member @snwh.

Petition in Germany to recognize unpaid contribution to free and open source software projects as 'society-beneficial volunteering' (ehrenamt)!

This will give volunteering for e.g. @postmarketOS , @freifunk , @kde , @nextcloud , @Mastodon and other libre projects the same legal status as taking care of an elderly family member, which provides tax benefits and relaxes requirements for receiving unemployment benefits.

Telegram, the cloud-based freemium chat, has now implemented strict rate limiting for users of alternative clients, VPNs and virtual phone numbers.
Clients like Nekogram, Nagram, Cherrygram and Unigram may show transmission delays or errors.
If your client had recently become slower, disable the VPN and use a real number.

@kolev I love #XMPP but not having a single cross-platform fully-featured client makes onboarding normies much more difficult, hindering adoption greatly.

Nothing wrong with being the #Ubuntu or #LinuxMint of decentralised #FOSS messengers... people who need the Archlinuxes and BSDs will find them in time.

I have managed to onboard lots of people to cross-platform messengers like #DeltaChat, #ElementMessenger and #SignalApp, but not a single person to XMPP. Cross platform apps also make switching OSes eaiser, e.g. migrating from Windows to Linux, or Android to LinuxMobile.

it's my birthday! 🎂

After two long and painful years, several design iterations, and more than 50 rebases later, we finally merged the infamous, trauma-inducing merge request !362 on GNOME Calendar.

The calendars list in the quick-add popover has undergone accessibility improvements, providing a better experience for assistive technologies and keyboard users (to a limited extent). Specifically: tabbing from outside the list will focus the selected calendar in the list; tabbing from inside the list will skip the entire list; arrow keys automatically select the focused calendar; and finally, assistive technologies now inform the user of the checked/selected state.

Admittedly, the quick-add popover is currently unreachable via keyboard because we lack the resources to implement keyboard focus for month and week cells. We are currently trying to address this issue in merge request !564, and hope to get it merged for GNOME 50, but it's a significant undertaking for a single unpaid developer. If it is not too much trouble, I would really appreciate some donations, to keep me motivated to improve accessibility throughout GNOME and sustain myself: tesk.page/#donate

For non-accessibility-related details about this merge request, feel free to check out mastodon.social/@nekohayo/1155…

First MR merged in the currently happening GNOME Calendar livestream: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c…

It's already available in the current nightly flatpak version. It is so nice to be able to use the new event quick-add popover, with no extra swirly pages etc. to pick the target calendar. Very efficient! 😌

Thanks to @TheEvilSkeleton for their patience and sisyphean rebasing of that much awaited merge request over the past 2 years 🫡

4 tickets have been closed as a result!
