Hi all! Well, I didn’t plan it, but word got out anyway: Bridgy Fed‘s Bluesky <=> fediverse support went online a couple weeks ago, quietly and without announcement, but people still found it. Over 1200 accounts have turned it on so far and bridged themselves one direction or the other. It’s great to see so much early interest!
It’s still very early, and I wasn’t quite prepared for this much volume this quickly. Expect lots of bugs, missing features, downtime, and other rough edges. The docs are mostly up to date, at least. If you hit a problem, search the open issues, and if you don’t see it there, feel free to file it.
Also, much of the current state is not final. Expect some design and policy choices to change. For example, right now you have to manually enable the bridge, but that may change eventually, at least for Bluesky accounts bridging into the fediverse.
Otherwise, there’s a ton to do, and I’m only one person, doing this on the side, so progress will be slow. They say if you don’t feel uncomfortable when you ship, you probably waited too long, so let me just say that I feel very uncomfortable right now, hopefully in a good way. 😀 Thanks again for all the interest, and for your patience!

@Seirdy the focus thing is really weird, i fixed it by moving most focuses into microtasks so even if they were called in an event handler (which i suspect is the problem) they still work, and this seems to reliably fix it but i still don't know why the issue doesn't affect semaphore and pinafore
@Seirdy focus is more reliable in enafore in at least one place now! pinafore and semaphore rely on 2 or 3 stacked requestAnimationFrames to try to focus the emoji picker's search box when the dialog opens, so it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't
@Seirdy would you happen to know of a good role="menu" implementation? i've gotten requests to make the popup menus work like menus and not lists of buttons and i think that's a really good idea but i want to make sure i do it right and it seems complicated...

Nevim jestli letosni rok bude mit nejaky highlight, na ktery budeme za rok vzpominat, ale i tak to bylo super. Odlehcenejsi. Zabavnejsi. U jednoho predstaveni jsem usnul. V prvni rade. To se mi stalo v divadle poprve. Na to si asi za rok v parte vzpomeneme.

tohle by mě spolehlivě zabilo. Těch 161 km ne, ale to stoupání určitě. Tohle je kouzelné na Estonsku, je to placka mimochodem nejvyšší “hora” Estonska Suur Munamägi je také nejvyšší v celém Baltu a má 318 metrů.
Jj cely Balt je, další kuriozitou je ze Estonsko je cca stejně velké jako Nizozemí akorát tu žije něco málo přes milion lidi, přes padesát procent jsou lesy a je tu několik vyšších stovek medvědů, ale za celých pět let co tu jsem jsem ještě ani jednoho neviděl. Jako losa jo, ten mi předloni přeskočil plot od zahrady a jal se v zimě okusovat moje jabloně.
ano, ale vzal jsem to ještě s pětiletou “obklikou” přes Gibraltar. Jsem takový střelec, z extrému do extrému. To je moje už takové desetileté putování za prácí. Ale tady jsme se usadili, synek se naučil estonsky, příští rok jde do školy a když nás Rusáci nevyženou tak tu budeme až do důchodu. Pak bych chtěl zpět na jih.

Well that's one way of looking at it. Another take is that it's 2024, and Windows probably had first-letter navigation in Explorer (plus list views in general) in 1995.
@jscholes Wait, what? Sorry, I meant on the web specifically. I think the implementation is quite a bit different but, most importantly here IMHO, is the courage to take this paradigm to the web. It’s been successfully proven to work on the desktop, but we have not seen it on the web, did we? :)
I've helped clients implement it on the web, personally. But I was commenting more on the fact that Google Drive has existed for 12 years, which is an inexcusably long time to go without a basic feature that's been known to be useful (some would say essential) since the 1990s.
@jscholes I think it’s fairly excusable given the fact that the code base had to mature and the appetite had to be there. Let’s be realistic! This is not a critical business feature! :) :)
It's a business-critical feature for me to use a file manager effectively. The web is full of UIs where basic productivity features like this are never implemented, which in turn has lead to a generation of designers and developers who have no idea that they exist. And that's how we end up with modern Microsoft Windows as an example, which fails to provide a baseline level of efficiency across much of its newer controls.
@jscholes agree with James here. I have literally, no exageration, declined a quite prestigious job offer because they used google as their office productivity solution. And when I told that story to one of the most well known accessibility consultants in the UK, his comment was, "yep we've seen loads of people do that and they're right to, because access isn't there."

Genuine question, my experiences with MS Office + NVDA were quite traumatic, apparently JAWS is somewhat better. Mac stuff (I use both iWorks and Microsoft) isn't much better either.

For several months now, I've been using an app called Due for reminders, and I think it is helping me more than any other app I've tried. It has interactive notifications that let you reschedule or complete reminders from the lock screen; Siri support; a set of really nice sounds that can be chosen per-reminder; all the usual recurring features; and best of all, customizable auto-snoowhze, which causes the reminder to repeat until you either reschedule or complete it. Wow, thank you! am I right that it will nag you until you turn it off? That's the feature I've been searching for in all reminder apps. Like, not beep twice and go away, but reeeeally annoy me till I shut the reminder up.
@menelion iOS seems eventually throttle its notifications if it's repeating the same thing over and over, but if you set the snooze time to 10-15 minutes it should still nag you for several hours before being rate limited. And as soon as you open it or another reminder comes through it'll start nagging you about the overdue reminders.
