“We often dismiss skills that are not societally valued by pretending they are not skills. Or, sure, maybe they're skills, but they're mysterious and ineffable!
“You reinforce this idea each time you say ‘soft skills’ instead of working to enumerate them. Perhaps you mean ‘interpersonal skills,’ ‘leadership skills,’ or ‘communication skills.’ These are all technical skills, and they all have names.” - Sasha Laundy 🔥🔥🔥

@marxjohnson I love the achievement unlocked aspect of the hole post! is life being gamifyed? with stats skills perks exp etc? hangon a mo, why the heck does this sound like a lit-rpg novel??? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LitRPG thought you would get a kick out of this mark :)

You may have heard me talk about my Wyse 5070 "thin client" server on @linuxmatters

I installed it using Ubuntu 23.10, which is just about to go out of support, so I upgraded to 24.04 LTS. Took about 20 minutes, no drama.

in reply to Mark Johnson

arr, but the big question is this: :) did you type sudo apt-get upgrade first to upgrade all packages that did not require removal of other dependant packages then do apt-get dist-upgrade after a reboot? it's how i've done it paranoid maybe but it's not paranoya if an error could happen. also this way you have less errors on dist-upgrade hopefully.

in reply to Glyph

When you listed all of the technologies in a bog-standard web application, I recalled your "tangled web" pair of posts from 2009 (blog.glyph.im/2009/09/oh-atang… and blog.glyph.im/2009/09/web-unta…). In the second post, you advocated for compiling Python to JavaScript, to allow Python to be used across the whole stack. I wonder what you think about that today. I guess now we'd use wasm rather than compiling Python to JS.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt the most viable option right now is still PyScript, which uses Emscripten and not Wasm, so for the moment … no. Although I expect that will change soon, either as anaconda starts maintaining pyscript again or as it is overtaken by some other project using the official cpython wasm target

hey, so heads up:

that Win11 v24H2 "Enterprise G" ISO that's been the hot news lately is a complete flat-out lie based on files sourced from Windows Update servers, mashed together to form a poorly-made hackjob which also uses binaries from Windows 10 Pro v2004. to put simply:

  • ISO volume name and creation date are bogus; wrong tools used to generate image (imapi2 instead of oscdimg/cdimage) - final resulting OS image was produced a week ago on 27th June 2024 at 04:09:00 AM (UTC), ISO generated at roughly 04:25 AM
  • OS image is directly based off of the v24H2 RTM build's Pro source packages - WIM creation times match 1:1 with metadata ESDs from WU
  • the "Enterprise G" edition manifest's code signing catalog is actually borrowed from win10 v2004's professional edition; catalog signed on 7th December 2019 (same time as VB_RELEASE 19041.1); the conversion from Pro to "Enterprise G" using these hacked-together files took two minutes, tops
  • author tried to deliberately hide their tracks by removing any and all logs from the CBS logs directory
  • it's partially set up to auto-activate using massgrave KMS38 and remove edge after installation (the Edge removal thing is not present though)
  • guy who made the ISO also directly modified the media to swap out the setup background image from purple to pitch black to poorly "replicate" a problem present in official MS media for Win11 v24H2

the real Enterprise G is actually published by CMIT (joint venture between MS and CETC in China), meant for China government employees - first introduced in May 2017. the last release the venture made was based on Windows 10 v21H2 CU build 19044.1345, released on 28th January 2022.

don't trust random shit that people make up on the Internet. please.

A part of me would love to have a Mac because of its deep integration with iOS.

Seems like I am not the only one having this issue. Also I have tried both flatpak and snap. Currently have snap version installed. I did noticed that with Beta version of snap I don't think this behavior happened with @thunderbird
Also I am on newly installed #Kubuntu 24.04.

Axos calling Earth, Axos calling Earth... " Chilling out this evening watching Doctor Who The Claws of Axos (1971). Classic 70's Who at its best, and still one of my favourite 3rd Doctor & Jo Grant adventures featuring the Master and UNIT. #DoctorWho
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield That sounds great, it's a brilliant story. I really liked the 3rd Doctor stories that feature UNIT and the Master.
in reply to Paul Bowler

I do, as well, but since the Doctor was stuck on Earth and the Master was free to travel it amazed me how often the Master tried to do his thing on Earth where the Doctor would always defeat him. I guess it was the Master's way of just trying to continually agravate him.

Ugh, Mastodon’s rolling out a new meta tag for verifying links.

Now we can do:

  • reciprocal links
  • IndieWeb h-cards (can work with reciprocal links)
  • Semantic Web markup that maps to v-cards (can work with reciprocal links)
  • Ariadne proofs (Keyoxide) (works with many different account providers)
  • Fediverse-link-preview-specific identity verification but only for accounts approved by your instance admin.

xkcd 927: Standards

(Transcript on explain xkcd)

in reply to Seirdy

Can we please stop re-inventing webpage author verification with platform-specific metadata? We’ve got Twitter-specific, Facebook-specific, etc. markup for webpage verification and now we’ve got Fedi-specific verification.

make it stop

in reply to Seirdy

We have bidirectional mappings between webpages figured out. Stop figuring it out.
in reply to Seirdy

Servers already cache long lists of Fediverse domains and verified profile links. Going through a page’s rel-me links for link previews as well as profile links should be doable.

Relatedly, the Fediverse small-DDoS problem still needs solving and this just makes it more obvious. Including link previews in the post and verifying them after a much longer random delay (measured in minutes), first checking for previews from a list of preview-generating servers, would address most issues.

in reply to Seirdy

*makes misskey specific verification that's incompatible with mastodon specific verification*
