Are audiobooks set to change forever? vi.ie/are-audiobooks-set-to-ch…
in reply to David Goldfield

This trend of AI narrators for audio books is quite disturbing in my opinion. There are some truly phenominal human readers out there, and I'd hate to lose the joy of listening to them read and do all the various voices of characters and stuff. While I can easily use synthetic speech on my computer, iPhone, ETC, I have never been able to use a TTS voice to read for pleasure. I have no clue why, but there's some sort of disconnect in my brain, and having to focus on what the TTS voice is saying just takes me out of the story, especially if it's one that I've heard with excellent narration from a human reader.

I was lucky enough to be warned by @honk -- if you see any familiar names they would probably appreciate a heads up about their face and name being used for a scam.

I am truly surprised at the number of people that can't recall a time in very recent history when trusted politicians, journalists, media outlets and notable public figures wittingly and unwittingly conspired to use overblown news reports & wild reactions to those reports in a feedback loop to prevent the best Presidential candidate for the American people being elected, handing the election to the best candidate for the American oligarchs instead.

Something reminded me today of this gem by Roy Fielding (author of the dissertation that coined the term REST): roy.gbiv.com/untangled/2008/sp… The quote from the conclusion of James Burke's Connections series is worthwhile all by itself, but then Fielding ties it into some discussion that was happening at the time of writing about what is and isn't REST.

The app apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/a… (available in the @IzzyOnDroid repo) has (finally) been using the @openfoodfacts API since today's update \o/

Scan name (source OpenFoodFacts), select expiry date, done.

Great, I've always wanted that. ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks #openfoodfacts

I've just put together a 40 second "fast forward" video for our High Performance Graphics talk later this month: youtube.com/watch?v=gkeqny6zMD…

The animations were all hand-coded in Rust and rendered in Vello in real time. Just a screen record in OBS to add the voiceover, no other editing. This feels like a preview of the potential for this infrastructure to support high-powered creative tools.

An update to Food Expirations had to be removed (fresh index being deployed as I write this) as it introduced several proprietary components, hopefully by accident).

I’m trying to come up with a more cynical and violently disparaging take on both the work of living human beings *and* the performance management process itself, and coming up short. lattice.com/blog/leading-the-w…

I don't know why I've been thinking so much about "Agile". Maybe looking at LinkedIn too much (for unrelated reasons) has broken some demon seal within me, but despite the fact that I'm not interacting with it now, I find myself annoyed about it more than I have been in a while. Today I guess I've got a milquetoast defense of Agile & Scrum: a lot of what they get blamed for is just management trying to go too fast, without explaining.

(ICYMI, see previous for context <mastodon.social/@glyph/1127356…>)

People need to recognize that the criminals in swatting are the cops for reacting to unauthenticated reports with violence.
in reply to Charles U. Farley

In that respect, it's the same as "identity theft", where the "victim" is actually victimized by payment providers, banks, and the credit bureaus, who failed to authenticate the person they issued credit to or otherwise acted on behalf of.
