Happy Birthday to the LVFS

9 years ago today I wrote 4 little PHP scripts and pushed it to OpenShift which was the beginning of the LVFS. We've since rewritten it in Python, switched the deployment from "sudo git pull" on the server under my stairs at home (literally) to deploying onto AWS with Terraform.

In 9 years we've onboarded over 140 vendors, shipped ~110 million firmware files and added support for ~85 firmware update protocols for ~1600 different devices. I'm pretty happy with that.

TIL that using markdown style underscores to emphasize a word or phrase _like this_ sucks for screen readers.

🤦‍♀️
it reads the underscores, which makes sense but…

I just wish there was a way to provide emphasis clues to people reading regardless of vision levels. Italics and bold and all that are incredibly useful tools for text communication and it sucks to not be able to use any of them on an effing messaging platform.

@cachondo apple’s does leave a lot to be desired as far as its pure text-to-speech capabilities go.

It feels like yet another piece of software they wrote a “good enough” version of, released, and then just wandered off and forgot about.

It's bad enough that we had region-locked physical media, but for the internet to have not given that up by now is just stupid.
It's 2024 and I can't watch a random youtube video from the US. Why? I don't get it.

you have also some weird broadcasting deals. There are a couple shows you can’t watch on some country on netflix or whatever because some company bought exclusive rights for that region.

Good news Monday: covid test was negative this morning. (Will test again in a couple of hours in case it's a duff test/bad sampling technique. Then if the second test is negative, wait 48 hours and test again before giving the all clear. But feeling mostly better today.)

Congrats! I've been positive since Saturday morning, but the days before were a buildup of irritations. Those 2 lines seemed to be my bodies justification just to sleep, though. The weekend has vanished in a blaze of just not being awake.

When I work a year on #curl that amounts to about 1.5 milliseconds spent on each installation.

Seems worth it.😌

Trying to boot Fedora on a boring old x86 laptop... so I used Fedora Media Writer to write the image to USB, then hit F9 for boot options.

The drive doesn't show up as a boot option.

BIOS is set to legacy mode, no secure boot, nothing. It just doesn't even try to read from the USB drive.

I guess installing Asahi on Macs is officially easier than installing Linux on PCs... at least some PCs, anyway.

in reply to Matt Campbell

@karolherbst What I really meant is that there's no inaccessible firmware/BIOS UI to deal with.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt oh sure, I was just curious, because I haven't considered that to be a problem at all.

But yeah.. the recovery path being accessible on macos sounds like an important feature, even if that's just a side effect.

However there are people working on using a slim Linux boot environment instead of grub, so that could also solve this issue, but I've heard that the kexec way of doing things doesn't work on apple silicon devices.

in reply to karolherbst 🐧 🦀

@karolherbst It seems to me that it would be better to boot straight into the full OS (with whatever accessibility features it has), with as few intermediate stages as possible, and, in particular, no stages that have their own UI (like u-boot and GRUB). I understand there are reasons to have emulated UEFI and GRUB in the mix for Fedora though, for consistency with other platforms.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt yeah, maybe. I'm not that deep into the topic myself, I just remembered that people were working on it and that it might make sense to bring up accessibility there if that hasn't happen already. Maybe it's one of the reasons of doing that, I just don't know.
in reply to karolherbst 🐧 🦀

@karolherbst @matt The endgame here is to have a thing in the Asahi Installer that can boot an existing install under qemu on macOS, or a rescue image, so you can fix (most) boot issues. If that is using text console passthrough (stdio) it should be accessible via the host macOS.

Then we can mostly just ignore the a11y story for our boot chain since it's largely hidden anyway. Though identifying what a problem is could be a challenge, but there's no practical solution for that inline (no, we're not adding a whole audio engine and screen reader into m1n1/u-boot...). It would make more sense to set up some kind of "breadcrumb" system that logs to a file or NVMe partition something that you can then inspect from macOS (bonus points for using the macOS kernel dump format and triggering the macOS error report dialog directly lol).

in reply to Hector Martin

@karolherbst Definitely agree with not adding an audio engine and screen reader into m1n1 or u-boot. I much prefer the Apple approach of having no UI at all in the happy path (other than the logo and sound that happen in all cases), and falling back to a full OS for anything other than the happy path.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt @karolherbst Yeah, we literally install recoveryOS for Asahi because we have to (platform reqs) so it's silly not to use it and slowly grow it into more of a boot recovery environment for *us* too.
in reply to Hector Martin

BTW, thanks for documenting how the Apple Silicon boot process works. I was really impressed when I read, in that Asahi documentation, that even the boot-time volume selector uses a full recovery OS so it can run VoiceOver and other accessibility tools.

"a filename when none exists"

Starting in #curl 8.10.0, curl works a little harder to come up with a filename to store the download in when -O is used.

in the case of http://example.com/one/two/?id=42, what happens when the file 'two' already exists and then you change it to id=43?

Exactly eight years ago #Microsoft made powershell open source and I *immediately* filed a pull request to remove their #curl alias...

Did not really work.

daniel.haxx.se/blog/2016/08/19…

in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

I know that there are some people at Microsoft who care about open source, fairness, mutual support etc.
I wonder what those people think, e. g., @shanselman, @davidfowl.
Sometimes big enterprises get caught up in business rules and compatibility requirements and forget about common sense and fair interactions between humans but there are always people in there who can see through all this and can escalate things in there.
As curl users we can probably agree that the alias is pointless.

Over at Twitter anti-nuclear Green loudmouth Hanno Klausmeier is calling for a full year prison sentence for the audacity of delaying the demolition of the #Grafenrheinfeld cooling towers last Friday.

Is Klausmeier calling for such draconian punishment for the mere inconvenience of waiting 1.5 hours longer before the towers got demolished?

Or is it something else and is he afraid for a louder pro-nuclear voice that he wants to scare into silence?

You decide.

Yep, it all went fine. The notification for add-on updates works. The one I maintain also works fine without changes. Had to restart Firefox and Thunderbird, but everything else is fine. And I sent a donation to the project. Thanks a lot!

Thank you so much! We very much appreciate it (both the donation, the confirmation, and the feedback that the new features work as expected). Have a great week.

Zase někdo nezavřel a víkend nám utekl.

Řekla, že jsme to udělali my a chtěla ji zaplatit. Doma jsem navíc zjistil, že jsem ji tam nechal na klíčích SmartTag.

Ah, the Zen Stone! My first portable MP3 player. It was pretty neat for the time. I still remember recording voice labels for the various folders I put on the device.
