I’ve been told the Telegram CEO arrest includes concerns about ransomware groups using the service to distribute stolen victim data - Telegram hadn’t been acting on reports (they did eventually remove Qilin).
Re Telegram - two main issues are apparently at play. One is child porn, the other is concerns about ransomware/extortion groups. The big concern is rightly about the first one.
With the later, groups targeting France (and the UK) have been dumping victim data on Telegram groups, with Telegram directly hosting the data and then failing to remove it.
Telegram is not an encrypted platform - the groups are plain text.
Telegram has <50 staff and 1 billion monthly active users.
With regards to Elon’s claim today that a majority of Mastodon content is child porn - this isn’t true.
Some Fediverse servers are unsavoury - as an instance admin, you can chose to defederate them or not cache media content. You would only encounter this if a user interacted with it.
After approaching two years of being a Mastodon admin to a server with tens of thousands of users, I’ve only ever seen one post which was concerning - I removed the server and reported it to relevant authorities.

@pitermach well, they're not all made of concrete, but mine is. It's just the easiest and cheapest way to make something big and heavy in a custom shape. The old Neumann lathes had huge cast iron platters but that's kinda hard to DIY…

Je sais bien tout ça. C'est d'ailleurs à moitié faux (les messages peuvent être chiffrés de bout en bout et les calls le sont par défaut). Donc oui il y a sans doute plus secure pour ceux qui veulent avoir des activités criminelles, mais Telegram dérange, contrairement à Signal par exemple. Et la raison qui me semble la plus credible c'est qu'ils refusent de fournir les clés de déchiffrement pour le mainstream (que du coup seul TG est capable éventuellement de processer).
Les groupes ne sont pas chiffrés du tout, et c'est la source majeure de problèmes sur Telegram. Même pour le 1-on-1 ce n'est pas chiffré par défaut, ce qui est absolument dingue en 2024.

I really enjoyed @yatil new article on WCAG levels. When the WCAG Guidelines were being created members tried to correlate the different levels (A, AA, AAA) based on how difficult they'd be to implement. It would be helpful if the standards within each level designation were checked again. The standards could be regrouped based on their current level of difficulty. and those that think we should build transit? Let's talk about the blue line extension in Montreal. I don't know how many decades they talked about it, but now they have barely started and are telling us they now need 7 years and a few more billions to build the 8 km extension with a handful of stations.
Not to mention the REM that for a few years has destroyed an important transit line...
This is more complex than governing for the lobbies. This is not only to entertain the local economy (feeding the local workers rather than these at the other end of the planet), but also to prevent dependence, dumping, takeovers.
But I hope that there will be incentives for local <25k$ cars; while a good portion of people could use active or collective transportation most of the time, we do need cars, sometimes, and we'd better use energy-efficient ones that don't suffocate our closed, non-infinite atmosphere.
