Yesterday I attempted to create my first iOS shortcut. All I wanted to do is the following: create a folder where I can store my most favorite shortcuts, display that list on the screen and let me run a shortcut from the list. Of course, the idea is to assign this to an Action Button. In theory, it’s a very uncomplicated shortcut. Yet, why does iOS keep saying that “cannot find such a shortcut” when I run one from the list? All the variables seem to be in the right place. (1/2)

The shortcut king as far as I'm concerned is @jakobrosin. He has many, many of them.
in reply to Andre Louis

Oooo thanks for that. Jakob, where is your shortcut treasure bin? :)

@FreakyFwoof Haha I haven’t actually published any as most are highly personalised and I’d need to polish a lot of stuff to get them public. But I’m mostly running a few automations here and there. For example when opening Zoom / any other videoconferencing app, my phone automatically goes into my meetings focus, whic in turn limits notifications and calls. A sleep focus change triggers a toggle in my home assistant which in turn does a bunch of stuff in my home automation sphere, changing speakers behaviours, checking a few sensors ETC. And I’ve got an action button shortcut which does do different things based on my location and phone focus at the moment. There are also a few battery related automations, such as turning on low power mode earlier than iOs does it, and turning it off again… I am shure I forget things.

It is funny i tried to build that exact same shortcut on sunday night. I bound a solution in the"shortcuts reddit, this shortcut looks"at a spesipic folder and lists all the shortcuts within that"particular folder.

Weird on ABC’s behalf. Like, how exactly would he do that? I wonder why so many businesses have such difficulty standing up to Trump? Or is it an interactive handwashing we are observing here? mas.to/@barney/113221877311355…

I always wanted a trashcan Mac Pro, so I found a 12-core one with 64GB of RAM. And, it's great, but I can't come close to stressing its memory capacity. Any ideas?

I may have to resort to desperate measures and start up a single Slack desktop instance.

People who are into “Accessible PDFs” will say “you can add a hidden structure to your PDF, so screen reader users can read them”. Which is like only the smallest slice of what makes something accessible. It’s the “there is an elevator at the back that gives you access through the kitchen and the toilet is on another floor in another building” of digital accessibility.

On some level, do you ever stop wanting those who have wronged you to fall on their reched knees before you and beg for forgiveness? We just get really good at covering it up. Just me?

@modulux I mean, these are people I love, but also people who don't know the meaning of remorse or a true apology.

The other day I referenced a recent controversial thread, "fedi is for losers," that outlined the ways fedi folk are societal outliers. I gravitated here, eagerly, because it lines up with my values. I feel more estranged from my society than ever. I just came from Insta. Pop culture & consumerism. Any thought that takes longer than 5 seconds is dull. I spent a day last week with a friend & noticed how much of their daily life revolves around purchasing/acquisition (mostly to be forgotten). 😫

Another ridiculously busy month for #postmarketOS

So much work being done by so many people! it's genuinely amazing to be a part of it. Amazing job by Pablo and @ollieparanoid on the blog post as always.

I'll stop now.

just noticed that tiktok muted the audio on a video of mine because of a copyright strike based on... silence
in reply to Molly White

Would the copyright in question be due to John Cage? 4 minutes 33 seconds for solo piano?

Does WhatsApp for desktop literally ever stay linked? Even when you link with phone number, it seems it will always eventually just go unexpected error, please link again with the QR code from your phone, and sign me out. Piece of shit.

Mine doesn't unlink, but I also keep it open in the background at almost all times.

FREAKING FINALLY

"Buttons are back, baby!! This piece has been 15 years in the making, more or less."

@mimsical in the WSJ on the resurgance of physical buttons for interfaces.

"Fundamentally, the problem with touch-based interfaces is that they aren’t touch-based at all, because they need us to look when using them."

Materiality and embodiment ftw.

Migrating from @gajim apt to flatpak release. Do this so you don't loose encryption and history.

Migrate your data
When switching to Flatpak you might want to migrate your user data (accounts, history, ...) from your previous installation. Just copy your user data from/to the following directories:
Copy ~/.local/share/gajim -> ~/.var/app/org.gajim.Gajim/data/gajim
Copy ~/.config/gajim -> ~/.var/app/org.gajim.Gajim/config/gajim

/via dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/tree…

Massive E-Learning Platform #Udemy Gave Teachers a Gen #AI 'Opt-Out Window'. It's Already Over.

Udemy will train generative AI on classes developed/users contributed on its site. It is opt-out (meaning, everyone was already opted in) with a time window... and opting out may "affect course visibility and potential earnings."

Udemy's reason for the opt-out window was reportedly because removing data from LLMs is hard. IMO, that would be the reason for making it opt-in, but here we are...

I appreciate XFinity for not doing outages in a row whilst I was delivering our 1-hour presentation as a team, but doing a string of them since about noon is playing cruel tricks on unsuspecting folks who are talking, say, during a Slack huddle and not realizing my net gave up its soul in the middle of that process. Huge thanks there, just, really fun.

Been testing the new O1-preview GPT model OpenAI has for simple accessibility questions, just explaining concepts that help me in my own responses for messages to colleagues for example. On average, it'll say "thought for 10 seconds" on them, sometimes 11. If you nudge it to think of nuances to the question or problem at hand, it does a lot better and superbly without needing later corrections to what it said because it thought of it without as much detail in the past. Love this.
in reply to Tamas G

Not saying it's the magic bullet that solves all output of the AI to not contain accessibility issues or errors, because I do think that's a bit far-cry unless it was prompted well, but it's improving, and at the very least it might avoid more common-found mistakes like color alone or using contrasting colors in general. That's my hope anyway.

question for people who rely on screen readers: what is a good way of notating "hey the next block of text is very unfriendly to screen readers, and only useful if you need my gpg key" succinctly?
