How to write good.
1. Avoid alliteration. Always.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. Avoid clichés like the plague. (They're old hat.)
4. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
5. One should never generalize.
6. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.
7. Be more or less specific.
8. Sentence fragments? Eliminate.
9. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
10. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.
11. Who needs rhetorical questions?

Wow. I didn't expect the amount of resonance my writeup is getting. Thank you very much.

I did a lot of changes, split the document. Hopefully providing alternative, practical strategies for synthesizing sounds in a size-coding context:

@Friendica Support

in reply to Gerhard Hallstein

in reply to Gerhard Hallstein

in reply to Gerhard Hallstein

This week's post is short but manages to be a bit contemplative nonetheless.

Me fascina.

“Under [Stallman’s] ideological leadership, the free software movement is unsafe, particularly for women. Women represent just 3% of the free software community, compared to 23% of industry programmers generally. This is no accident.”

This, 100%. Thank you for saying out in the open what we have all lived, survived, observed, and known to be true for decades. Now that F/OSS can’t look away, what will we do about it? The fish rots from the head, after all…

A question to people who attended schools for the blind. When I was mainstreamed, I loved the science experiments, except for the fact that so many of them were very visual in nature. What kind of experiments did they have you do in a curriculum designed for blind people?

Just got back from my dentist. Her boss has introduced #AI into the clinic. It claims to automatically detect many conditions and right away it found 4 issues affecting my teeth.

The only downside was that its findings were 100% wrong, which my dentist of many years' experience spotted immediately.

This weekend I managed to get #wmbus receiver working. 🎉

Our housing cooperative installed new hot water and heater meters with radio readings. I found out it uses 868Mhz wmbus protocol and that there is an #ESPHome extension adding support for this.
I only needed encryption keys, which I was provided with by the cooperative.

Now my #HomeAssistant tracks out heating and hot water #consuption. Yay...

#OTD in 1843.

William Rowan Hamilton invents quaternions, a 3D system of complex numbers.

Important precursors to this work included Euler's four-square identity (1748) & Olinde Rodrigues' parameterization of general rotations by 4 parameters (1840), but neither of these writers treated the four-parameter rotations as an algebra. Carl Friedrich Gauss had discovered quaternions in 1819, but this work was not published until 1900.

You ever seen something so painfully out of touch and oblivious it hurts?

Something I learned very intimately lately is just how variable disabilities can be. And this extends not just to mental disabilities but physical disabilities as well. The main disability I had before was static. Each day was like the last more or less. I always knew intellectually of course that this isn't the case for everything. And going through it is something else. So don't judge disabled people on their good or bad days. Sometimes it can be almost completely ok. Other days it'll be beyond a struggle to keep going. And often you don't know what it's gonna be until you're there. Don't be so quick to judge people one way or the other. If you see them then it's likely because they could manage then. It doesn't mean tomorrow will be the same.

Tamas G reshared this.

in reply to Keri Svendsen

@sapphireangel Yeah. Currently going through something similar. It's one thing to know it but quite something else to feel it. You can understand it intellectually but just like with most disabilities it's something that's very hard to get for someone who doesn't live it.
in reply to Talon

Yeah. It's a hard shift. You then beat yourself up a lot. Just know if you need to vent/talk it out I'm here. It took me a while to come to terms with it, and I'm more stable than not these days.

I finally got back into the Lloyd's Bank mobile app the other day, and I have to say they've really done a tubular job of ensuring the app is as accessible and easy-to-use as possible with VoiceOver. On-screen elements are clearly labelled, item focus is never lost, everything response as it should when interacted with, and so much more. Sure, some stuff is weirdly positioned, but you can easily explore by touch if needed. Are other UK/US/other countries' banking apps this accessible? #LloydsBank #banking #OnlineBanking #MobileBanking #blind

I hate the redesign. All this spaces stuff, no consistency as to your inbox location within the rest of the apps navigation ... I had no issue with the old layout at all.

Not so short note on aria-label usage – Big Table Edition

“aria-label is one of a number of secondary methods to label native HTML UI elements. It works particularly well on interactive elements, it also works well on most block level elements old skoolterm that have explicitly or implicitly defined structural roles. It works less well or not at all on text level semantics.”
