If an employer ever asks you to resign, tell them "no".

There is no benefit to resigning unless you have another job lined up already.

Make them fire you. Get your unemployment benefits. Make sure you are legally protected in case of malfeasance. Resigning undermines all of that.

This message brought to you by AWS telling workers to return to office 5-days-a-week by commuting or relocating, or they should resign.

Again, the answer is "no, you'll have to fire me."

EDIT: To clarify, in most areas "fired" and "let go" are not legally meaningful terms and can be used interchangeably. The important term is "for cause" or not. So don't commit misconduct to get fired. Poor job performance is typically not a "for cause" reason, nor is failure to accept changes like RTO

I can’t back this up with data *directly* but I have a firm conviction that there are at least 10x as many people like this as there are useful idiots who will vote for Jill Stein or leave the top of the ticket blank because of some esoteric backwards interpretation of Kropotkin. If you want to help in the home stretch then GOTV will be categorically more consequential than yelling at a guy you made up to get mad at (and you probably already know that) historians.social/@philip_card…
in reply to Glyph

You're probably right. But now I can't help but wonder what Kropotkin said that people are misinterpreting.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt If you have actually read Kropotkin and you're trying to reverse engineer what an actual person might think, you're overthinking it :)

There *is* an actual kind of stupid person who watches streamers react to video essays where the essayist might cite Kropotkin; this sort of person is likely to be far left, and to care a lot about e.g. Gaza, and maybe even say stuff about how electoralism is bad and " we need revolution". But that's not who I'm talking about…

Me: "Hey cool! The college is holding a pep rally!? My brain: Now hold on! Don't you realize it's going to be loud?" me: "Yeah but it will be fun!" Brain: "Loud!" Me: "I'll meet people!" There's where airPods pro come in quite nicely. Trust me on that one.
in reply to Carlos Blanco

@cublanco Oh, I'm sure. Those are way out of my budget though. Heck, the standard airpods are out of reach.

I had to use Quicktime and screen-record this, because #SeeingAI doesn't allow you to save videos, or not that I could work out at least. Anyway, here's a test with a video Kirsten sent me this morning, in which Alice is driving a car around a track in Disneyland.
in reply to Andre Louis

Wow! That’s so cool. I wonder how it’s doing all of this? with updates it will get even better.

My matrix dart sdk talk from #matrixconf 2024. All things considered I am pretty satisfied with it, especially considering it's my first completely solo talk.

Working on a prototype in PocketPages. It's a bit rough around the edges but rapidly improving, and I'm having a blast.

Feels like the good parts of old school PHP development, with database and schema management built in, the ability to fall back to Go when you need it, real-time support and a Dart SDK for Flutter, plus other community-supported client APIs of course. About the only thing missing for me is switching SQLite out for something like Postgres if your prototype ever grows large enough, but since 90+% of them won't, I'm just not sweating it.

in reply to Nolan Darilek

Does that stack have any kind of support for real-time updates with WebSockets? That's one thing I still like about Phoenix.
in reply to Matt Campbell

If you specifically mean WebSockets, no, it uses SSE. So polling instead, but it does batch everything over one connection at least. pocketbase.io/docs/api-realtim…

I arrived at my GGSE English "Creative Writing" exam having not prepared whatsoever. I plagiarised the song Little Lady by Ed Sheeran word-for-word, receiving an A* for discussing the topic of sex trafficking & child exploitation which ultimately leads to the protagonists death.

Reminder!

URL handling differences between URL parser implementations are to be expected.

in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

to be expected, sure. But should differences in URL handling behavior from different parsers be accepted as the right behavior going forward?
in reply to Andrew Kaster

@akaster I don't see how it can be avoided for as long as we can't agree on a single *fixed* URL specification. Which for some reason seems to be impossible to achieve.

Most adorable : the conductor had a printed sign "Tickets please" they hold in my sight in the silent area of the train rather than loudly asking for it. They said that'd be more comfortable for everyone than shouting and half of the people in the train were wearing headphones anyway.

I really, really like that idea and their commitment to just print these tiny signs.

in reply to Braid in trains - solidarity with

Cool, but if you're blind or low vision, you're basically screwed. when a conductor does the old thing (i.e., speaking normally), I have time to slowly open my bag, grab my wallet, put my disability card and tickets, if needed, out of it, and be in time. If a seemingly random person comes to me in silence, I won't react.

#windows store important update. Greetings everyone. Just letting everyone know in the latest update to the microsoft store app on windows 11, they have changed where you now download store updates. You used to go to the library tab in the microsoft store app however, this has now changed so to check for app updates open the microsoft store app by searching for store on the start menu. Then tab over till you hear home. Then arrow down till you hear downloads and hit enter. Then tab till you hear get updates button. sometimes focus will not always land on this get updates button so if this happens, just shift tab back till you find this button. Hit the space bar on get updates and follow the instructions. I hope this helps. I was a little confused at first because I did not know this had changed.

A friend of mine, also blind and a very advanced user, tried to send me a Zoom meeting invitation with a Mac. Here's what happened:
1. Instead of a meeting at 4 pm the meeting was set to last from 8 PM previous day to 4 PM next day;
2. the appointment location contained only this: "[Name Redacted] is inviting you to a Zoom meeting.";
3. The appointment body was totally empty, so no Zoom link was available.
That's all you need to know about #Accessibility and usability of a Mac with #VoiceOver.
To prevent a holy war of devoted Mac fans, I am not telling you this is completely impossible. I'm just telling you that on Windows it's a breeze for a blind user and I even don't know how to achieve such messy results here.

in reply to André Polykanine

I've scheduled a bunch of Zoom meetings with Mac OS over the years, really wonder how this person went about it cause unless Zoom changed something recently it really shouldn’t be that hard with VO. I wonder if the crazy amount of hate VO on Mac gets is because of people coming from Windows expecting it to behave the same? Been using Mac OS for about 15 years at this point and just don’t have many of the problems I see a lot of people complaining about.

Somehow I can no longer get my Braille display to talk to NVDA. I've no idea what I did, or if I pressed some random keystroke that disables it, in the same way you can turn off speech or something. Very confused.
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo Orbit Reader 20+, and I fixed it by setting the tether mode to focus, not automatically. Maybe that breaks things. Must have lent on that key by mistake one day and didn't realise.
in reply to Andre Louis

I like the orbit. Despite the high repair rates mine's never had a problem, and from a cold start it's the quickest braille device I've used for taking a note, despite being the cheapest.
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo Do you find it noisy? Also, is it fast enough to be used as a braille display on your smart phone? I've always been curious of the Orbit.
in reply to Just Martin

@mcourcel I wouldn't want to read on it out loud in church, and 20 cells is a bit slow for fluent reading regardless of your display, really.
I should go record the canute for comparison purposes...
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo @mcourcel Well, they do at least have a 40 these days and it refreshes at the same speed as the 20 doesn't it? Not slower.
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo @mcourcel Yeah for me I go with the larger number of cells because I am fairly slow at reading Braille to be honest.
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo Yeah unlike something like the Vario which uses Windows CE which takes just over a minute to start, and I think the Humanware devices use Android under the hood don't they? The Esys devices used to start up fairly snappy but I never used them as I wanted onboard translation.
