Does anyone know why Matrix doesn't notify you when a picture message is received? It's super annoying. And I say Matrix instead of naming a client because every single client refuses to notify for it so I imagine it's something in the spec.

What frustrates me the most about #Matrix is that Vector clusterfucked the client situation themselves. Having a de facto default, "go-to" Matrix client with feature parity across all platforms was one of the biggest strengths. Now we have feature split between two official clients. And the one they promote these days is still an unfinished beta. 🤯 It is absolutely mindboggling how you can screw up this bad.

All these thoughts are unfortunately completely irrelevant. Whatever I think about #Telegram (or #Signal for that matter) doesn't matter when I don't know almost anybody using it. All my friends, family, and such are on #WhatsApp so that's it for me. I actually use a bridge (by #Element, paid for) from #Matrix, but without that I would either have to use their app or be that strange guy who communicates only via #SMS (as I was for many years).

#ElementX nutze ich schon länger parallel zu #Element für meine Chats.

Nun habe ich aber das neue #SchildiChat Next ausprobiert.

Es basiert auch auf ElementX, hat aber #Spaces integriert. Das gefällt mir sehr gut. Damit lassen sich z.B. Chaträume übersichtlich ordnen.

#Matrix ist für mich nach wie vor ne gute Sache. Ich würde es auch WhatsApp-Wechslern eher empfehlen als #Signal ... vor allem auch, weil man sich damit nicht vom Smartphone abhängig macht.

I said it before on Mastodon. I'm reposting this again. Comparing #DeltaChat and #Matrix together, if you want hassle free and consistent messenger for private #E2EE chats, don't go for Matrix. DeltaChat is way better.

However, if you want something like a public forum, or a public chatroom, don't go for DeltaChat. Matrix is way better suited for that. And DeltaChat does not support public groups at all. In DeltaChat groups, there is no admin or moderator and everyone have got permission to remove or add the others.

I think I have to write a longer post on my personal blog about these two, comparing them together.

Before and after closing the #Matrix #Element chat client tab in Firefox: 2.8 gigabytes of RAM freed. For *one tab*. And this is not a memory-inefficient browser we're talking about.

I guess feature-rich public chatrooms have a cost.

Wow, #Element (the flagship #Matrix client) dropped support for #Firefox ESR in release 1.11.70. Or rather, they never supported it in the first place, only supporting "last two versions". The change causes a corrupted session for ESR users, and can't be reverted to fix it.

(Note that all Debian Stable users, by default, run Firefox ESR. This is kind of a big deal. ESR is always up to date on security, and gets new features once per year.)

The best we've gotten so far, from a dev caught in the middle:
