The people selling shovels in a gold rush are the people who have a financial interest in creating unrealistic expectations about the likelihood you'll find gold.

This was true for the gold rush.

It was true for Bitcoin.

It's true for AI.

You know how people used to keep polaroids from their holidays?

Well I've started doing the same thing. Except... I got a polaroid printer, and I print screen shots I've taken in video games I've played.

Digital holidays. Vintage mementos of spaces that don't really exist.

Well, everyone would be right, because testing is supposed to be a thing, right? so yep, that's a bit of a screw up.

The image is a statement from President Donald J. Trump, dated November 12, 2024. It features a logo at the top with the words "TRUMP VANCE TRANSITION" in blue and red letters, with five red stars above the word "TRUMP."

The statement announces that Elon Musk, in collaboration with Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency, abbreviated as "DOGE." The goal is to dismantle government bureaucracy, reduce regulations, cut expenditures, and restructure federal agencies as part of the "Save America" movement. Elon Musk is quoted as saying that this will send shockwaves through the system and affect many involved in government waste.

The statement describes this initiative as potentially the "Manhattan Project" of the time, aiming for drastic changes with guidance from outside the government. It will partner with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget for large-scale reform and an entrepreneurial approach to government.

The statement expresses anticipation for Musk and Ramaswamy to improve federal bureaucracy efficiency and reduce government spending, which is stated to be $6.5 trillion annually. The work is expected to conclude by July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The statement ends with confidence in their success.

@vick21 Hey. Just wondering, have you updated to macOS Sequoia? If so, how do the new features in VoiceOver work? Like, how would I go upon adding keyboard shortcuts, etc.
in reply to Mabelin Ramirez

I think 15.1 is quite fine. I like the new “commands” panel in VOiceOver Utility.

Please boost for reach.

We could really use some help. I've been sick for about a week now, and haven't had the spoons to post, but reaching the point now where I dont have a choice. We are out of money ($17.33 total to our names atm), and we have a lot of bills coming due, including $275.67 if we don't want our electricity disconnected on the 18th, $300 for our overdue income tax payment arrangement which was supposed to have been paid on the 8th, $168.84 for our water, $226.46 for our phones, another $567.83 at the start of next month for them to not take our car.

Seriously, the keyboard and screen reader accessibility of Zoom text chat is abominably awful. How does anyone use this efficiently and without wanting to scream? How do Zoom just not care enough to do anything about it for so long?
in reply to Jamie Teh

I'd say it's been gradually getting worse over the last year or so. it used to be ... not great by any means but somewhat better. now its just painfully bad
in reply to Jamie Teh

IT'S SHIT. I often need to click links in Zoom chats and I fight with it every damned time

You should read about Cory Doctorow's description of the Enshittification process.

The first part of the process is vendors create high-quality offerings to attract users, even if it results in a loss of money. The idea is to get market share.

I fear that mankind is trapped in an endless cycle with social media.

Maybe next year.

The BlindShell 3 looks okay, if pricy. It has a touchscreen and an app store now. (Aurora Store, for anyone curious.) But it's astoundingly expensive, surpassing the iPhone SE and many powerful Android phones in price, and yet it still has only 3 GB RAM, 32 GB storage, and whatever Android version runs comfortably on that kind of hardware. Maybe the target audience doesn't care, but I wouldn't be surprised if some apps already don't run on it, and in another five years that'll be even more true. I wish people who need or want button phones didn't have to make that kind of compromise. Realistically, if I were still working as an AT trainer, I know for a fact I'd be telling people about this phone, but I also know they'd run up against software and hardware limitations. It's just a matter of deciding whether pure touchscreen is more annoying than outdated, expensive hardware and all that comes with it. Also, note that I'm not blaming the company for any of this; I have no way to know whether the price they're charging for it is fair, given the costs associated with manufacturing a device that will be vastly less popular than mainstream phones, the likely lack of a favourable bulk contract with whatever company produces the chips they're using, the cost of development, etc. It could be a completely fair price. It's certainly less revolting than paying $6000 for an outdated tablet with a Braille display attached. But let's be honest, most of you reading this post have probably spent more money on at least one phone. As a person who still appreciates buttons and likes to hack on Android devices, I wish I *could* justify one of these, but it's definitely not going to happen.
in reply to Simon Jaeger (Procrastodon)

My guess is that many of BlindShell's customers are just wanting a tactile phone that they can call and text with. Anything extra is a nice bonus but I suspect that, for most of their customers, it's more than enough phone for their needs. That is in no way meant as an insult. There are lots of consumers who want a phone with basic features which is both tactile and accessible. Believe me, with VoiceOver on iOS being as flaky as it is, sometimes a phone like that sounds very tempting to me.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield Yeah, I totally understand that. It hink the Blindshell is at the point where most of the people I know who had trouble with touchscreens could use it easily, and that's excellent. And it sure does sound nice sometimes with Voiceover and Talkback both having their own unique brand of weirdness.
in reply to Simon Jaeger (Procrastodon)

I doubt I would ever give up my iPhone and go to something like a BlindShell because I'd be giving up too many features that are too important to me. But I'll bet it's a perfect phone for a lot of people.

in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield Also, phones like it are good as secondary phones though, again, bought used. I have a Smartvision which I'm using as a sound and USB transmitter/receiver. It has yet to see a SIM card, but works very well as it is, and the SIM is always an option.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield as an android user; this has no appeal for me either; but my father would have loved it; as he had the shakes and couldn't swipe on a touchscreen so felt left out of people's device options for folk who are blind
in reply to David Goldfield

Also, there are probably a lot of BlindShell users who want more than a basic phone but who either can't work with or just don't want to work with touch screens. I'm glad there are phones for those users, as well.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield Granted, but frankly, with keyboard access on iOS, I don't remember the last time I touched my touch screen.

To my followers: whenever I post about a TV show or a book, such as Doctor Who or Babylon 5, I'll try to remember to add relevant hashtags, such as #DoctorWho or #Babylon5 to allow those who are not interested in those topics to filter them out.
in reply to David Goldfield

And for those of us who subscribe to those hashtags to see them. 😊

Hey, Who fans. Sadly, Mastodon didn't pan out the way I hoped, there wasn't much of a community that built up and there still isn't that much really. So...

We've just set up on Bsky if you want to connect and chat there - bsky.app/profile/bigblueboxpod… and (for now at least) still on X/Twitter - x.com/bigblueboxpcast

Whatever social channel you're on, let's connect and chat #DoctorWho

For now, Mastodon, peace out. It's been fun.

in reply to The Big Blue Box Podcast

I'm sorry to hear that. As my followers will surely verify, I never resist getting into a conversation about #DoctorWho. Please, don't give up on Mastodon.

There's some libpst/readpst projects worth checking out. That worked for me some years ago when some huge Exchange server collapsed and we were given .pst files in return.

"Simplify your sign-in with a passkey" is one hell of a bald-faced lie.

Passkeys solve a problem introduced by first parties not having a password manager in their products. They solved it in the worst way possible.

@thunderbird Hey Thunderbird!

So the Android app is finally there. Yay! Job well done! And the export QR code is visible, too!

Buuuut. On the very same email Server, with the very same connection options, 1 account can be exported, 3 are not shown. The only difference? The Username and password.

Is this known?

A New Anaconda Web UI Installer Coming To Fedora Linux 42 linuxtoday.com/blog/a-new-anac…
in reply to LinuxToday

Does #fedora support the old #kickstart format or some other format that allows for install templating?
in reply to Khronos

@khronos yes. the installer is built so the backend and UI layers are very separated, so this change doesn't actually affect kickstart support really at all.

x.x.x.x - - [10/Nov/2024:00:02:37 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 301 162 "-" "okhttp/4.9.0"

You know what’s interesting about this log line? It repeats 56,686,963 times in www.kernel.org logs for yesterday, across 4 nodes. That’s about 700 times a second, and this has been going on for months.

These requests aren’t intentionally malicious – they issue a simple GET /, receive their 301 redirect, and terminate the connection. From what I can tell, this is some kind of appliance or software installed on mobile clients that uses “can I reach www.kernel.org” as a network test.

This wouldn’t be that big of a deal – a single plaintext “GET /“ that triggers an immediate 301 is very cheap for us to generate, but the number of these requests has been steadily growing.

If you have any idea what this is and how to make it stop, please reach out?
