🚀 Thanks for all the feedback on my German post about AI & critical thinking! I’ve just published the English version: »AI makes us humans unlearn how to think — and we mistake it for progress.«

If you care about culture, education, and how convenience can quietly erode our judgement, give it a read and let me know what you think. 👇

WordPress may be run by… that guy, but it still has a massive user base. They all need better accessibility documentation.

@rianrietveld wants to improve it, but needs sponsors:

Rian is good people and I’d love for her to be able to do this.

A neat project: from Brazil, a tool to print a star map that folds into a dome! Written by a physics professor. Teachers use it to introduce children to the night sky.

It had _never_ occurred to me that, instead of simply reciting to students _yet again_ the old speech about how flat maps and flat star charts distort the sphere, you could just _fix the map_ instead and make it dome-shaped. Brilliant!

They hope to open-source soon. Uses my Skyfield library.

Many consider #Bluesky a success, but in fact its activity has steadily declined since Trump's inauguration. The #Fediverse has had similar trends. Rapid growth caused by an external event is always followed by a slow decline back to a small base of loyal users. In a world full of dopamine addiction, it's hard to be a social network without dark patterns.

#SocialMedia

in reply to Jiří Eischmann

This pattern correlates with news intake from past elections with a lead up during high profile events. Adoption is tough. My friends aren’t on Mastodon and beyond news or science it seems like a struggle to get information on other fun social topics like sports. Where it isn’t a mirror bot no one interacts with.

The removal of the dark patterns is wonderful tho. It feels like you can really time out because you don’t see anything interesting sometimes and that’s okay.

@schmaker Jo, po Polsku máme nejšpinavější výrobu elektřiny v EU. To je pěkně vidět tady: app.electricitymaps.com/
Ale i tak je ekologičtější jezdit na naši elektřinu nebo benzín/naftu.

What Does Linux Need? A Dial!
"It’s fair to say that there can’t be many developers who have found the need for a rotary telephone dial as a peripheral for their Linux computer, but in case you are among them you might find [Stefan Wiehler]’s kernel driver for rotary dials to be of use...."

If Privacy and Security Matter—Invest in the Librem 5, Powered by PureOS (Debian Linux- Open Source).

In today’s hyper-connected world, protecting your data, privacy, and security isn’t optional—it’s essential.

The Librem 5 features hardware kill switches that give you full control over the device—including the OS, apps, camera, microphone, Wi-Fi, internet, and cellular connectivity.

With Purism, you are in control.

Order yours today: puri.sm/

in reply to Purism

I own a Librem5 and this device has not even a little bit met the expectations that I and a lot of other people had for it. It is still pretty much useless for daily driving and stays in my drawer for most of the time. Although I wouldn't call Purism a scam, it really underestimated the scale of such a project. The worst thing was the lack of communication.

All the "business opportunities" now are just a call for help in a struggle to survive somehow imho.

Good news for privacy fans: European data protection authorities declare the current use of cookie banners illegal!

Now just waiting on them to enforce "Reject All" on all websites. 😀👇

Jiří Eischmann reshared this.

The #RustaceanStation podcast just released an interview that Luuk van der Duim did with @DataTriny and me about #AccessKit at #RustWeek: rustacean-station.org/episode/…

Musharraf reshared this.

in reply to Matt Campbell

@emassey0135 Then again, the most efficient way to gather information from UIA would probably require Wine to implement the UIA feature called Remote Operations which I helped implement while I was at Microsoft, and that feature is covered by a patent. Yes, I'm deliberately sabotaging my ability to just ignore the patent, by mentioning it publicly.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@emassey0135 For what it's worth, the best public overview of the UIA Remote Operations feature was probably the description of this NVDA PR by Michael Curran: github.com/nvaccess/nvda/pull/… The feature is mostly not of interest to UIA providers (toolkits), only clients (ATs).

How does the Open Document Format (ODF) – as used in LibreOffice and other apps – compare to Microsoft's .docx, .xlsx and .pptx formats? Find out here: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #foss #OpenSource #standards
in reply to LibreOffice

Interessante vergelijking in onderstaande blog van @libreoffice tussen Open Document Format (#ODF) en leveranciersgebonden formats, o.a. "ODF: Recommended by governments (UK, Taiwan, the Netherlands and France) and supranational organisations (EU, NATO)". Voor ODF geldt in NL zelfs een 'Pas toe of leg uit'-verplichting van @forumstandaardisatie
