So among the various things i #selfhost is my NAS. It's just a desktop that I installed a nice disk controler and some 12K SAS drives and #TrueNAS. But it lives, like a lot of my kit, in the garage. And it's hot in the garage tonight. Ambient air temp is like 82F/28C at 23:00 at night.

Most of the time it's fine. CPUs tend to run around 45C just doin normal stuff. But when I do an scp of a film I've digitized on my laptop, it goes over gigabit ethernet and that seems to warm up the CPUs. For the whole like 45-90 seconds the scp is running, the cores get super hot. Then it calms down.

A graph labeled "CPU Overview". There's ring graph like a speedometer saying "3% average usage" which suggests I'm only using about 3 percent of my CPUs' capabilities. But it also says Hottest 94 degrees (this is celsius). So the thermal readings on one of my cores is basically 94 degrees.

Nearly 1,800 pages of escapism which enthralled me greatly the first time I read it. I've been back a handful of times, too.

It's light (but moving), entertaining YA fantasy. The good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, and there's not a lot of grey area. It is a bit heavy on the traditional gender roles, Inos is a princess but she's not helplessly waiting to be rescued, and while Rap is the strong commoner, he's not always right, or always doing the rescuing. They're genuine (if young and not overly complex) people.
It's clever, diversionary fantasy with a rich magic system. The sequel is just as good too, which is rare.

Wo ich die Tage wieder ein bisschen #Schach gespielt habe, bekam ich auch Lust auf ein lockeres PC-Schachprogramm.

Leider sind die meisten Schachprogramme leider staubtrocken und die pseudo-intellektuellen Sprachsamples von #Fritz gingen mir schon damals auf die Nerven.

Das brachte durch spitzzüngige Kommentare die Atmosphäre einer lockeren Schachpartie gut rüber. Was vergleichbares kenne ich leider nicht.

Kurioserweise ist das Spiel sehr schwer zu bekommen, weder digital archiviert noch gebraucht als CD. Und Videomaterial existiert auch keines auf YouTube. 😳 Da könnte auch das etwas stümperhafte technische Fundament schuld sein: Ich erinnere mich noch, dass ein elendiger Videocodec (von Real Network oder Microsoft) für die Animationen des Schweinehunds genutzt wurde. Außerdem gabs noch einen CD-Kopierschutz. 😮‍💨 Dürfte vermutlich nicht leicht sein, das auf modernen Systemen lauffähig zu machen...

TBH, what I'd actually want to see are examples of *real consequences* of those bugs.

Nobody can dispute that misconfigured S3 permissions and default MongoDB passwords are dangerous. There are plenty of actual companies whose data have been stolen because of these problems. Prompt injection vulnerabilities, beyond the simple "write a glowing review for this paper" in white font on white background, still seem to be largely theoretical for now.

Playing SimCity as a child really confused me. Letting people live near where they worked and shopped seemed obvious and like every city I’d been to. Being penalised for that and instead being required to build huge roads between massive residential areas and distant commercial areas made no sense. Then I went to the USA for the first time and saw cities that looked like the dystopias I’d built in the game.

Omlouvám se za svou delší nepřítomnost, ale druhý týden desítek se mnou poněkud zamával. Domů jsem se vracela pravidelně v šest, v sedm večer a to už jsem nebyla schopná udržet myšlenku.
Ale teď! ☝️Teď! Mám! Dovolenou!! V pondělí míříme do Jizerských hor. Spolu s lordem Archibaldem. Byli jsme kvůli tomu za paní doktor. Že se mladý pán zadýchává, tak jak je na tom a co srdíčko, páč cesta je to dlouhá. A dobře víme, jaké bylo cestování s Maxem.
