“National security” was the excuse used to lock up 100K+ Japanese Americans in concentration camps

“National security” was the excuse used to ban Jewish refugees escaping Nazi Germany

“National security” was the excuse used to illegally invade Iraq & Afghanistan

So as you see the Trump regime claim “National security” to lock up Latino Americans in concentration camps, know that this is the oldest fascist trick in the book.

Don’t fall for it. Reject it. Uphold justice & due process of law.

This is the best kind of hacker conference talk: little-known subject or project, opening new dimensions of possibilities for curious people not afraid to experiment and put in effort and who self-select to take interest or not. Not yet another rehashing of basics of commonplace matters (be it tech or social), not yet another retro-tech deep dive. The speaker is not holding club mate bottle on stage to make people notice their street cred.

Age verification via face scans is not safety — it's surveillance. Biometric age guessing is inaccurate, discriminatory, and creepy AF. Stop normalizing it. eff.org/deeplinks/2025/01/face…

I see a lot of requests for money on Mastodon - and I do mean a lot. On top of that, there are those who will boost the requests of others. Since this could be a very easy way for some people to exploit the kindness of others, I respectfully suggest we all adopt the policy of only boosting requests from people we know and whose claims we can verify. Also be careful about your own reputation. If you desperately ask people for a hundred today, then plunk a thousand down on an extravagance tomorrow, anyone who responded to your plea today is going to feel used and taken advantage of. Just my suggestions.
in reply to Bruce Toews

ugh, I don't really know how to respond to this. My husband and I have been regularly in a place where we're barely making ends meet, so I know exactly how those people feel who are reaching out, asking for help. I regularly boost those kinds of posts when I encounter them, because I know how it feels to barely have two cents to rub together, meanwhile looking at a mountain of bills wondering how the hell we're going to make it. I don't honestly think it's our place to judge whether those people post asking for help when the next day they might be eating caviar for dinner. In my opinion, that kind of greed should lay on the consciences of those who are doing it, not on the ones who really just want to offer a helping hand. That's just like saying I'm not gonna help the homeless guy on the street because if I give him money, all he's gonna do is smoke or booze it away. We can still help, it might not mean giving them cash, but my pastor at my church has helped many homeless just by taking them to Subway and buying them a meal. The truly appreciative ones won't even bat an eye at that. I'm obviously not able to help out these posters out here in a monetary fashion, but in my opinion, sometimes a boost is all that person needs to at least know, "Hey, someone out there is hearing me, someone out there gives a crap about what I'm going through.

There are some people who live out of it though. People can't always donate. Even if people have chronic illness here, they work here. There's just no choice, either that or they start drinking, a lot. People over here don't give money because you do that, then you see people go and buy beer. And then you lose trust in people. But I get your point and understand it, because I've seen people who have nothing and I myself had had nothing, but budgeting sometimes helped, a lot. People wouldn't eat only to be able to pay the bills. And it's not anyone's fault, but humanity as a whole, because capitalism, global warming, nature turned to absolute crap, etc. And the power hungry, greedy assholes who are the kings and queens in the game of chess we are all part of in this world. Only the pawns are about 8 billion people, the average folk.

I know people generally have mixed feelings about vibe coding. I have been particularly concerned about the idea of a Software-on-demand model that AI companies are trying to push. Won't that displays devs? disrupt software markets? However, we all know what it's like to beg devs to make a few small changes so the software becomes accessible.
So I have been trying to get the RaspberryPi Imager to flash an OS on to my SD card. Turns out, the software is hardly accessible. In frustration, I got an AI to generate a tool that just works. Could I have used something like DD? Sure, but I also wanted to enable a few headless configurations, and that would include finding the right template for custom.toml.
I'm not saying that vibe coding is the answer to accessibility barriers, but... I'm also not saying it isn't. If anyone's interested in the utility, I'd be happy to share it.

I can't believe that I haven't encountered this HP Fanfic before today. It's very very good. I especially love the Quibbler articles. I don't think anyone has done this before.

@Billie We introduced that on August 1st. In case you missed it, here's the full story: android.izzysoft.de/articles/n… (also in German – I sometimes forget which language to use where 🙈)

Well well, my Radio Browser for Linux is now 1995 lines long, wow! I really should consider splitting out function sections into their own files now. Like seriously, but I just cannot get myself to do it, even though I drop in new functions in their appropriate slots. Ha. It now has a Top-500 voted feature, along with supporting Pipewire natively without the Pulse bridge. Both are welcome changes. Now to harden it so that Windows folks and those on Mac still can use the menu system but with CoreAudio or Wasapi...
Ok, now that's done! We're up to 2048 lines. It also now added pagination for all flows, yay!

Well, Kea DHCP was working fine but then I realized OpnSense didn't actually merge in the changes to register DHCP entries into Unbound's DNS and also after further examination it's a pretty terrible situation because of the way Unbound works and the expense of reloading every time a text file changes

so

Dnsmasq with DNS running on a custom port, Unbound setup to forward internal DNS forward and reverse to Dnsmasq's little DNS server

One step forward, two steps back. Annoying but I guess this is what you gotta do.

I saw @richlv post the other day about #GoogleMaps vs #OpenStreetMap and needed to share this as well.

I first noticed this difference a few months back when my driving instructor couldn't find the location that I sent him (because Google Maps doesn't show it at all). Only after I added "Fairway Walk" (see Google Screenshot for the name/location) as a named road to OSM, did it get added to Google Maps. There are still apartments missing from the Google Maps though.

in reply to Pietervdvn

my best guess would be because this was a golf course (the park) that was converted to a housing estate.

EDIT:

You can see what I mean if you look at the Esri World Imagery from 2016 or earlier.

Feltopia, the stop motion animation game!

Note: this trailer is over a year old; they were around for PAX West 2024 (see here: youtube.com/watch?v=5DeRK_68rm…), but I have no idea whether the game is available or not.

#JoyScrolling: If you are not familiar with Andrea Love's felted stop animation, I *highly* recommend her YT channel; she's self-taught, and so good, she's been hired to do ads like the one below, and she's been spotlighted by The Modern Met (here:

If you still believe Carney is focused on what the population wants...

After cancelling the carbon tax
After cancelling the digital service tax
After cancelling the capital gains tax
After asking the government to cut 15% of its expenses (after promising not to cut jobs)
After forcing the flight attendants to forgo their right to strike

... And I'm not even talking about Israel, Palestine, the US

I don't care if he's playing 4D chess. I believe what he has done and said so far
