Apple Music on Windows is infuriating. This morning it decided that it just can't load my library. At all. Ever. No music for my workday today, I guess. Yes I know, self-hosted music libraries. But I have neither the time 'nor the money to find, sort, manage, and back-up all the music I'm interested in. And even if I did, they'd be music ripped from used CD's from the thrift store, so the artist wouldn't get any money anyway. Plus I do enjoy discovering new music. And none of the internet radio stations I know of quite meet my taste, and they don't offer a no repeat workday anyway. Plus the only one that comes close has ads and no way to pay to remove them.

The Renphro line of scales seems to do the trick for me. Amazon has them for $30 or something like that. The app is accessible, although the controls will appear is simply text, so you won't know you can double-tap on something until you try. But if it is tappable, it does engage, and all the information is readable. The model I got has four electrode pads that send very small currents of electricity through your feet to measure 13 characteristics of your physiology, including body fat, body water, estimated calories, estimated metabolic age, and up to 13 body measurements. oh yes, of course, it does body weight too. LOL. If you have any metallic implants within your body, or any electronic devices that regulate you in any way, pacemaker being the most obvious example, it is recommended that you either not use a scale with electrodes, or where insulating footware when weighing. I hope this helps.

Looking for a multi--in-one USB-C docking thing for my Macbook Pro. I want Ethernet (faster than 1 GBPS prefered), power delivery, USB A and C ports.
Seems pretty hard to find things that aren't triple display whatevers. I want zero displays. Certainly don't care about three of them.

So far, I've only found one that has 2.5 GBE, but it also has no USB type A ports, which I still need.

I've also found some expensive Thunderbolt docks (OWC) that have 2.5 GBE, but they're not bus powered.

This week's Minoan Tarot cards. This deck is my creation, made the old-fashioned way, with ink on paper, and available at bookstores everywhere. Many more card images at minoantarot.com/

Three of Rhytons: Celebrate your connection with others as you support each other and lift each other up. Loving, trusting relationships are vital to mental and emotional health.

Maid of Labryses: Stay curious! Keep exploring new ideas. Stretch your mind, and don't give up when there's a puzzle to be solved.

The great Polish exodus: The arrival of 100,000s of Poles changed the face of Britain, but now they're returning home in droves for a better life in their low-tax, booming homeland. Could there be a more damning indictment of our decline?

Working on documenting the AT-SPI xml spec and realizing that the C library's documentation for character offsets and ranges is not at all clear in terms of how multi-byte characters should be handled. For instance, the documentation for atspi_text_get_character_count only states that it "gets the character count of an AccessibleText object." Ugh. Need to get this fixed.

The mirror version is also true: when a person who's done bad things dies, the time to talk about those bad things is *right then, while their body is still warm*.

(Also before, while they're doing it, and long after, when they're history and it's hard to get people to care. But the bastards who say THIS IS NOT THE TIME THINK OF THEIR FAMILY are denying the victims their voice right when it will be heard the loudest. And to hell with those bastards.)

iRobot apparently just declared bankruptcy, so if you have an internet connected one and want to retain control if the cloud platform vanishes, take a look at github.com/koalazak/dorita980#… and stash that information somewhere safe (and note that it changes if you ever factory reset the device, so try not to do that)

Today's #FreeSoftwareAdvent is LibreOffice, the amazing free office suit (document editor, spreadsheet, presentation tool, etc).

I know that I've included this in previous #FreeSoftwareAdvent toots, but I use LibreOffice, particularly Writer, every day.

Better still, this one isn't just for Linux users, so if you are thinking about moving away from your Microsoft or Apple office suite, you can give LibreOffice a try, for free, alongside whatever you use currently, and give it a good go before you made a decision.

RE: fosstodon.org/@arcanechat/1157…

#ArcaneChat doesn't have delivery receipts, only read receipts, the only automatic responses the app does in your behalf is to handle invite links, for that to be abused you first have to share your invite link with a malicious contact, you can get in contact with random/public entity via their invite link and be safe, as long as it is not you the one sharing your invite link!

In #Signal / #WhatsApp as soon as you contact someone or they guess your number you are vulnerable

"Tool allows stealthy tracking of #Signal and #WhatsApp users through delivery receipts"

Another privacy vulnerability caused by the dependency on phone numbers.

In #ArcaneChat (and other #chatmail clients like #DeltaChat) you don't need a phone number (or any private data at all!) to register, so such attacks are simply impossible, keep your family safe, join arcanechat.me

even then most people will not do it, and as said in the previous post, even without phone number discovery, once you get in contact with someone then they can track you in Signal/WhatsApp, imagine you used the app to contact or give feedback to some goverment institution, from that point on they can use this exploit on you, that is not the case with ArcaneChat

There are some confusing bits in the interface if all devrooms start sending mails at the same time (which is happening now). I can see the mail in the outbox, someone might have missed pressing send. I'll poke them.

In general, some devrooms edit rejection mails (which is a good thing), which may also cause them to be sent a bit later than in the interface shows.

Boy Tailscale is just fire for a little network/homelab newbie like me. Being able to connect to my routers interface or any other device in the network at home through a raspberry pi acting as subnetrouter, being able to send wake on lan packets from anywhere through a little docker container that's just sitting there that I can access from anywhere. Being able to use it as reverse proxy to let a vps securely connect to these services and even expose them to the outside, or just routing all the traffic through an exit node somewhere. Love it. It makes life so much more easy.
