Biweekly is a terrible word.

-- Would you know if “biweekly” means twice a week or twice a month in this email?

#translation

Edit: Guys, the whole point is that it can mean both :P

Reminds me of this surreal conversation I once had at a conference where I was interpreting:

"Which programme are you using to translate? The French is perfect! Even the technical vocab!"

"We are the ones interpreting."

"Yes, I know your voice. But what are you reading off? [points to my open laptop in the booth]"

"We are not reading, sir. We are looking at the slides which are too small for us to read from the back of the room."

<LOOK OF DISBELIEF>

ATTENTION THAI/ENGLISH BILINGUALS AND TRANSLATORS

GNOME Shell's Thai translation is in a very sad state right now, with only ~46% of all strings translated. The worst part is, the first dialogue you see on your first login is not even translated!

BUT YOU CAN HELP!

I've been working on a thing for a few weeks, and I'm hoping there are #Language / #FileFormat / #Markdown nerds and experts on Mastodon who can provide some input and sanity-check.

I looked for an existing markdown extension file format that would allow me to write a document in multiple languages, and I couldn't find anything that fit the bill.

So, I decided to create my own. 🤷‍♂️

The #translation contribution guide is now available! If you want to translate #FeatherWiki into your own language to help others use it more easily, follow the instructions in CONTRIBUTING.md:

codeberg.org/Alamantus/Feather…

There are 2 methods included: one for those comfortable making pull requests and another for those who are not. And if you're not up for making a full translation, I'd appreciate help ensuring new translations are accurate as they are created.

Thanks in advance!

What happens when you cross my crazy wak ass blind friend group, with state of de art AI technology, with my rediculous, embarrassing laugh, with a video about bad translations?

You get this: youtu.be/IpLWg9U4uRE?si=uhHKIV…

Fair warning, this is a lightly edited Discord voice chat session, and I apparently had my gain set waaaaaaay to high, so expect clipping and general audio discomfort.

So I am now ready to take on a new mentee. If you are Black or Brown (including South East Asian), are fluent-ish in Japanese, and want to become a manga translator, maybe I can help. Send me a message here or by email (littlenemo1905@gmail.com). Sorry, this doesn't apply to folks of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean backgrounds, since such people are already well represented in professional manga translation.

Boosts welcome! #manga #translation #Black #Brown #SouthEastAsia

"The #Mozilla #Firefox web browser is finally beginning to catch up in a market where every competitor has an online language #translation service feature. Firefox recently debuted its long-awaited #privacy-preserving on-device translation service."

This looks cool: #mozilla has released an add-on for #firefox that can do web page #translation *locally* instead of sending data to the cloud.

Based on Project Bergamot and implemented in WebAssembly

I am really happy about this announcement from #Mozilla: a free, completely local, #translation engine. Also you can run the training pipeline yourself. And, it can translate your input in forms to the language of the site. blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/lo…
