As everybody has already known for a couple days, the US has abducted Maduro and his wife in a massive operation (of which the exact details are not currently known, but involved hundreds of aircraft and at least some bombing of military and civilian targets), and has threatened Venezuela and the socialist party with further abductions and widespread murder if they do not hand over control of the country directly to the United States. In a statement that really says it all, Trump said that Machado is not being considered for the colonial viceroy position due to her sheer unpopularity. Various parties and countries around the world - and inside the US - have expressed their disapproval, which, as we all know, will not shift US foreign policy a single iota.
A few months ago, when the pressure campaign on Venezuela began, I speculated that Maduro was going to be killed or captured eventually. Flagrantly illegal and violent American military campaigns in Latin America are not new. The US has been invading land, looting banks, assassinating democratically elected leaders, and otherwise overthrowing countries in the region for their own economic benefit for the better part of two centuries, under both Democratic and Republican parties. Unfortunately, we all know that Russia and China are unlikely to do anything meaningful to contest the US in their attempt to more violently assert hegemony in Latin America. I doubt very much that the China of today will come out to bat for Venezuela and start meaningfully pressuring the US economically. For better and worse, we are far from the days of the USSR.
However, Latin America has, historically, met the US in its radicalism, committed to wars of anti-colonial nationalism, and carried out successful revolutions against the dictators placed in control from the US. As history continues ever onwards and conditions develop, I can only assume that we shall once again enter that radicalizing cycle. In that vein, the big question on my mind, and everybody else's, is: what comes next? Does the Venezuelan socialist party have the social and military cohesion to wage a years-long guerilla war against occupying troops? Can they quickly transition from a conventional to guerilla force as their military facilities are bombed, or will it take several years? Can they prevent the theft of their oil resources and make the attempt at foreign occupation more costly in both the manpower and economic costs than what that war will generate? Can Venezuela manufacture weapons for this guerilla war in a state of blockade? Will this military campaign begin immediately upon soldiers landing, or will it take a period of relatively unopposed occupation of months or even years? Will Cuba, Colombia, and even Mexico be in the same situation by the end of the year, with abducted leaders?
Yemen is the very recent proof that seemingly weak countries can force the American military to retreat in defeat. Can Venezuela follow? We shall see what Maduro has done to prepare the country for this war very soon. The only certain thing is that the murderous violence propagated by a trembling and dying empire shall be defeated eventually, whether it takes months, years, or decades, and the end result will be a socialist victory.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis. Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good. On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

More websites should approach UI design like Wikipedia: find something that works and stick with it for a while. Much rather use a good design from a decade ago, than a UI that is chopping and changing to keep up with the latest trends.

@Bri That’s who inspired me, yes, but golden hour wasn’t the song that inspired it. It was his piano playing in general that I really liked and wanted to draw ideas from. I'm not certified, but I have a certified colleague, we work as freelance partners together. And yes, there are quite a number of cases when a client requires a certified auditor.

Something interesting I’ve noticed. I can’t speak for fedi as a whole, but I’m not seeing the quote post feature used as much as I thought I would. I know of only two or three people who use it regularly. This isn’t a post for or against the feature. I’m just surprised I haven’t seen more people using it, especially since people have been requesting it for years.

Yeah, they can. Instances totally can I think, I know akkoma and pleroma support it, and have for a long, long time, but my instance doesn't, and I don't think we're going to for a long time, quotes aren't also supported in the clients I use, except the one on the phone, and I honestly don't want to see links randomly posted. Because quotes show up as links.
OK now I'm thinking seriously about the fact that yes, we could get NVDA remote to control an android phone by creating an accessibility service that sort of acts as a fake screen reader type thing just enough to send keyboard shortcuts. Though I'm not sure how we'd intercept Talkback/screen reader speech.
A simpler approach would be to control the phone in a way that's already possible, I.E. through SCRCPY, and then just make an Android TTS engine that pipes the text through to a Windows application via ADB. Said application could utilize nvda-controller-client.
Ahh, right. Makes sense. So: Start with a tts synth that passses to a Windows-run server utility on a tcp port, similar to the BridgeSynth that allowed Macintalk use through NVDA?
Problem I could see with another approach though, I.E. going through TalkBack logging, is that you'd somehow have to figure out how to intercept the text from either hte tts provider or TalkBack itself with no developer settings turned on. Whereas you'd have a direct line of sight by using a tts provider directly. And I figure you'd be ok so long as you had the tts utility, a. Pass the text over the connection, while B. Using a real tts engine of the user's choice on their actual device.
i meen if you got accessibility permitions you can just retreev the currently focused item and synthesize it. well, what if we make a custom tts engin so talkback thinks of passing text to us, then we also pass the text to the user's sinth of choice?

Our stance simplified: we want to make private communications available to anyone on the planet.
Problem: governments everywhere tend to want to control and contain private communications. While Iran and Russia might be contemporary poster examples trying to control private communication, almost all of the "Western" countries have similar control-tendencies, EU Chatcontrol, UK Online Safety Act, US KOSA etc.pp. And we often call those out. Without private communication, things are bleak.
@jrp mostly, it works, yes, despite various state attempts to block it. and we are working on making it harder, based on some R&D heavy revisions of how delta chat actually works internally. Last big change was delta.chat/en/2025-08-04-encry… which is in fact enabling another level of resilience and decentralization but that will be published about in a future blog post likely in spring 2026.
With Delta Chat Version 2, chats are end-to-end encrypted, always and by default. Previously it was possible that chats without green checkmarks could contain messages without end-to-end encryption...
The key double registering with my Keychron Q 6 Max starts to get ridiculous, even arrow keys and tab start double triggering now. I'll take the key caps off on sunday, maybe even the switches, just to see whether cleaning might fix it, but dude if not...
@felixule Spoiler I didn't mess around with removing switches or anything yet. I'm still kinda pissed I even have to do that with a 230€ board. I think the Q6Max was just a bad production, I mean there are enough happy people with other Keychron boards, heck if it wasn't for that issue I'd probably picked up a V6Max for work by now but idk if I really want to spend money on this kind of boards atm.
I only have this problem with my Q5 Max board. The V6 Max, which I recently bought, doesn't have any problems at all. So I suspect that it really is down to the switches.
One of the teenagers I work with is taking an interest in computers/networking. We're emailing about why you can't access home servers from outside your network, and how websites can be accessed from anywhere. Does anyone have a good analogy for LANs, private IP blocks, DNS, name servers, and accessing it all? Nothing I can come up with is a very good fit.
Edit: yes, another adult is copied on all emails. I know the CPP regulations, including the recent updates, and have passed advanced CP.
Phone extensions is the one I always go for. Hotels can't afford assigning a real phone number to every room, just as we can't afford assigning a separate IPV4 to every computer. Private IP addresses are like internal extensions that you can only call from a phone line in the hotel. Everybody is still permitted to call out, and their caller ID will appear as the main number for the hotel.
This is kind of confusing when you get to ports (which are actually a lot more like phone extensions). But ehh what can we do, every metaphor breaks down at some point.

Personally I'm looking for a replacement for my Discord-group that we can self-host, that also allows us to connect to a broader community. Matrix seems to align ideologically to what I want, but Element feels a bit cluttered and unintuitive tbh.
@bloodaxe Matrix is the protocol and is intended to support use cases like Discord. Sounds like you are more worried about client roadmaps though? Each project handles it differently - perhaps try cinny.in for something more Discordy?
I mean, I open up Cinny and it's more or less the same as Element, as far as I can tell at least.
Are we able to have Spaces with Rooms, where certain Rooms only act as VOIP-rooms that you can join/leave as you wish? I see a button up right in Element that allows you to start a video-call inside of a room, but I can't seem to use that unless I've got permission. Does that call everybody in the room somehow, or?
@bloodaxe Element Web has beta support for video rooms in labs. Cinny hasn’t implemented it yet, but this is a question for Cinny’s roadmap; it’s a client specific thing rather than a limitation of Matrix.
I guess in a way it's difficult to tell from a user perspective what is limited by the client, and what is limited by the actual Matrix specification 😅
@bloodaxe yup, understood. the fact is that Matrix as a protocol supports all the same functionality as Discord (and then some), with the possible exception of arbitrary permission combinations (Matrix uses a permission hierarchy rather than purely role based permissions). Video/voice rooms for instance are demo’d by element.io/blog/drop-in-drop-o… but clients like Element haven’t shipped them as they’re prioritising other stuff.
