Following a Twitter controversy, readers and authors were shocked to discover that Barnes and Noble has a new nationwide policy. Only the top 1-2 children's books per publisher per season will be sold in stores.
This is so wild to me because the only reason I like Barnes & Noble's is to be able to find new books in store. But this makes me just not want to go to their store ever again.
I'm not really interested in articles from the business perspective because business never has the people in mind. i'm always interested in the perspective of the people so here's just one article about the authors.
It's not fair to say that "businesses never have the people in mind" and it's not true. B&N is in emergency crisis mode right now. There is a real risk that B&N won't exist as a company in 2024. Think about all the employees up and down the company that will be impacted by that.
And think about the marginalized authors that will now be even more vulnerable to the whims of Amazon's black-box algorithms than they already are.

@XerSt Sicher. Beim offiziellen Client siehst Du das, wenn Du bei den App-Details zu den Versionen herunter scrollst und diese erweiterst (also per Version/APK). Bei NeoStore ebenfalls – und damit kannst Du auch zusätzlich über die Filter die Auswahl auf einzelne Repos einschränken.
Wie das bei anderen Clients aussieht weiß ich jetzt nicht, hab nicht alle durch probiert 😉
The Every Door app looks to be usefull to #screenReader users to an extend. It allows listing near by POIs fetching real data from #OSM and suggest edits. I like this. Of course for real mapping eye sight is required but for suggesting fixes it's not. e.g. filling in opening and closing hours and similar.

Souhlasím 👍 Jestli bude proti Babišovi tak je jasná volba, ale nadšený nebudu. Hlavně všechno bude lepší, než co to tam je teď. Spíš mně vadí, že koalice není schopna po letech zlodědka, postavit pořádného lídra a člověk bude volit někoho, aby hlavně nevolil Babiše.

So since this does not seem to be widely disseminated knowledge, the RH Voice speech synthesizer engine allows for training your own voice models by associating sets of sentences in a text file with their corresponding recordings as wav files. There is a tutorial about this on the project's Wiki at: github.com/RHVoice/RHVoice/wik…. I haven't tried it myself yet so can't answer possible questions, others have though so it surely works. @Tarrenvane You could certainly try. The possibilities of the engine allow for producing of pretty high quality, pleasant to listen voices actually. Take a look at the examples in Polish at zlotowicz.pl/synteza
@pitermach I've tried it, and getting the environment set up requires Linux wizardry that I still haven't been able to pull off. The HTK is some old patch for older code that isn't readily available now and trying to apply it breaks stuff.
@bluespacedragon Yes, recording conditions as close as possible to a recording studio tend to guarantee the best results. A good quality microphone is certainly going to boost the quality. The most important is to avoid echo, background noise etc. There are probably other things to watch out for but I haven't got all the specifics at hand at the moment, can ask though. The good thing is you can try on a small subset of sentences, around 50-100 and see how the general effect is shaping and either modify what you find annoying or carry on as you are. Also note that it is possible to train against currently supported linguistic models E.G. English. If you would like a new language to be supported, it is necessary to develop a new model for it which is a lot of work and expertise from what I've heard. Good luck!

Still no luck with the Baum display, but at least NVDA isn't crashing anymore. The display says "Baum V:005 19.03.98", then offers 4 modes. I can choose from Baum, Emul. 2, Emul. 3, or Emul. 4. None work with NVDA or Narrator. I even changed my serial to USB adapter's rate to 19200 instead of 9600, but this did nothing. The display uses a 2x5 header, so I got an adapter to go from that to serial. TMK there's only the one kind of adapter. I'm stuck. I'm not sure what else to try. I'm so close!
@jcsteh I'm honestly not sure. The Ebay listing said it's an AccessAbility RBT 40, but it's definitely Baum. At startup, it says it's from 1998, at least I'm assuming that's what those numbers indicate. Is there any way for NVDA to support this, or is it just too old?
That's definitely a Baum display, yes, but I think it uses a slightly different protocol, which means someone would have to add support to the driver assuming they could get the protocol documentation out of Baum. BRLTTY supports that display and NVDA supports BRLTTY, so you could use it that way, but it's fiddly and you might not have access to all the buttons that way.
@jcsteh I'll try brltty again. It failed earlier, but I'll keep at it. NVDA tends to be quite reluctant to connect to any display after it fails, so I've found I have to set it to no braille between attempts. At least, it won't go back to working with my mPower until I first set it to no braille. Thanks for the brltty tip.
I believe NVDA will only auto retry a connection to display for cases which support automatic detection; i.e. cases where you can set NVDA's braille display setting to automatic.
I would be interested to know if you managed to get this display working with #brltty. I was trying to help one guy with his Tieman Braille Voyager but we haven't managed it to work.
@pvagner @jcsteh Not so far. In fact, I've been trying to get my mPower to work with it. I know the mPower, cable, and adapter are all working just fine. So far, no luck. NVDA either fails to set Brltty as the display, or sets it, then outputs nothing. Brltty says I have no BrailleNote driver.
