Yesterday evening I upgraded my @Tutanota email account from 'Premium' to 'Revolutionary'.

I'm so happy with Tutanota's email service. I've been using it for 5 years now!

There is a strong rumour going round that some Fediverse developers and admins have held secret discussions with Meta/Facebook under NDAs.

The Fediverse is supposed to be an alliance of open projects built by a broad grassroots base. Its developers are not supposed to hold secret backroom discussions with people who have a horrific track record (theguardian.com/technology/202…).

Facebook/Meta is in effect a sociopathic corporation (buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanm…). Nothing good will come of talking to them.

@Nuno @amitten Well, I'd say it depends a lot on the concrete situation. Many #activitypub devs have seen how historically companies like Meta & Google have applied a Trojan horse strategy, to eventually take over the small spaces that decentralized and/or FOSS projects had opened. The #XMPP case comes to mind, but it also encompasses how the whole web has become.

If to put in place measures to avoid that happening to the #Fediverse is being a fanatic, long live the fanatics! 😃

What a great find: The #SurveillanceReport by @techlore & @thenewoil explains why Tutanota's new prices are a good decision, and that our current offer is "pretty darn cheap".

AN INSIDE JOB!

It was Russia that blew up the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. New York Times journalists came to this conclusion after talking with experts

The base of the dam, 20 meters high and up to 40 meters wide, took on most of the load of the dam.

There was a technical tunnel inside the base, you can get into it from the engine room, which is under the control of the Russian side. The tunnel is marked on drawings seen by the New York Times.

Great introduction to our app for your friends and family, if they care about their privacy but don't know where to start!

@marcelcosta We agree with the sentiment. But it's not our video, and it wouldn't be just (or even legal) to take it and copy it to our or some other PeerTube instance. Unfortunately, Naomi Brockwell isn't on the Fediverse yet. To support change in the meantime, you could upvote this Mastodon improvement: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i… or use NewPipe.

Hello everyone,
We have recently been made aware that our moderation has not been up to par. We apologize profusely for any inconvenience or harm this may have caused. We are committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all users, and we are taking steps to improve our moderation practices and update our block lists.
As a small team of two developers, we are unable to moderate an instance of 300+ users on our own, while also supporting our users and developing TweeseCake. To address this, we are opening applications for new moderators. These roles will be voluntary for now.
If you are interested in helping to moderate our community, please fill out the application form below. We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis.
If you have any questions about the application process, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. You can contact us by email at chef@tweesecake.app.
Thank you for your understanding and support. We hope to make TweeseCake a better place for everyone.

Writing my post about Vienna yesterday, I have completely forgotten that the #Warsaw underground have also made all of their announcements publicly available. Those are read by the late Tomasz Knapik, one of the most famous voice-over voices of the Polish movie scene. Explanation: before 1989, the available movies of the West were sparse in Poland and so it was cheaper to employ a voice-over i.e. one person reading all of the dialogue in Polish dubbed over the original audio track in whatever language a given movie came in. The tradition has stuck and now most of us wouldn't imagine it any other way. metro.waw.pl/strefa-pasazera/k… #Accessibility #Blind #PublicTransport

Interesting article. I think some of it is true, some of it is exaggeration (I self-host and have no issues with the size of the cache, for example). But ultimately I am not fussed if the entire world doesn't want to use the fedi. Centralised services have other problems and points of failures that may be the 2% that doesn't work for me.

But, where's the stuff about Kbin you mentioned? I didn't find it in the article.

"I asked a group of Helsinki officials what role information technology has played in their success reducing crashes in recent years. 'Zero,' replied Palomaki. 'We simply slowed down the cars.'"

Finland also investigates fatal car crashes similarly to how we investigate plane crashes.

Hey! We forgot to post about this earlier because LIFE keeps happening, but we updated our roadmap document:

github.com/superseriousbusines…

Check it out if you wanna get a feel for the order in which we'll likely implement things.

Also please note that just because something is not on the roadmap, doesn't mean we won't implement it! The things listed there are just the main things we wanna do (and are getting paid for by our NLnet grant), but we are always squeezing in little fixes + features here and there :)

Cuando escuchaba esta canción cuando salió hace 20 años no me gustaba porque me parecía muy directa. Ahora ya la estimo mucho más.

so for #audiomo, day 18, I know I haven't posted a lot on the hashtag recently, but I found this while digging through some old files, Originally recorded with yours truly on the piano, 11/17/2015. I had to flac it to get it to upload, but have an instrumental of only hope by Mandy Moore. I've got a couple more in I'm gonna save for days 19 and 20. but enjoy. If I had the access and the room to setup, I'd probably play like this again.

Back from vacation in Alsace having a look at late medieval and Early Modern art and architecture - basically a lot of demon butts and biomorphic stone work.
See: Gargoyles/groteques at Strasbourg cathedral. Most decoration was damaged during the French Revolution, these are restaurations from the 19th century. Beware possible historical antisemitism in the last image.

Damn it hits hard to reread all of this stuff in a day instead of gathering the various bits and pieces of knowledge and insight over time as I did.

But it's good. And an accessible explanation for cis allies too.

in reply to Fay 🏳️‍🌈

as a cis, I can confirm the second paragraph – and recommend everybody to read at least the intro and the first page (didn't get farther yet, needs to sink in first). Within about half an our I got a basic understanding of what I never even remotely grasped the years before. Far from being enough (that definitely takes more than half an hour) – but I have good non-cis friends helping me to understand better (thank you!).

The city of Vienna is doing this right! On their official website, under the section dedicated to audible traffic lights and other accessibility features for blind and partially sighted pedestrians, not only are the implemented solutions described in a great detail, but you can also listen to samples of how the lights will sound when they're red and green. An mp3 download of the samples is offered as well. It's cool that somebody thought it a good idea to include the sounds that an #Accessibility solution makes. I feel prepared now! wien.gv.at/verkehr/ampeln/sign… ##Austria #Wien #Blind

I just realized this year marks 20 years since I created #roffit. The tool I still today use to convert man pages to html... github.com/bagder/roffit (on the web sites for curl, c-ares, libssh2 and more)

Hello! I would like to invite everyone to join the #Accessible #Apple community on Discord. This server is dedicated to current and future #blind and/or #VisuallyImpaired users of #iPhone, #Mac, #Apple Watch and other #Apple products who would like to get the most out of their devices. If that's something you are interested in, give us a shot!!

Now to some FAQ that I guess will be asked over and over.
Q: There's only one administrator and that's you.
A: Yeah, but there's no point as there's literally noone else there, yet.
Q: Where are the rules?
A: They are not existent yet. Just please be a human.
Q: What's the point if there's AppleVis?
A: AppleVis was, and still is a great resource if it comes to stuff like APp directories, curated list of resources, podcasts ETC, however the forum features are suboptimal, especially for mobile usage. I have spoken to many people who are newcomers to the #Apple ecosystem and using the AppleVis website turned out to be harder than using their shiny new device itself.

Please keep in mind that the server is in a test stage, many things can happen, including channel deletions/additions, moderation appointments or server deletion in case there's no real interest. If you have any suggestions how could I improve it or if you would like to help me moderate, please reach out.
I kindly ask everyone to boost it to gauge interest. #accessibility #a11y #blind

in reply to Arkadiusz Świętnicki 🇨🇳 I HAVE MOVED

forgive me if this is a stupid question, as I am unfamiliar with discord. (In fact, I had to Google it just now to find out what the platform is about.) That said, my question is, what are the advantages of a community over there, rather than just using hashtags to “organize“ conversations here? For what it’s worth, I am totally not interested in the voice capabilities of discord, if that’s what has people excited about it (which I get it, it it’s just not for me.)

Being a moderator on reddit is a value exchange where the company gets free labor and the user gets the clout/privilege of managing a community.

Reddit is betting the moderators get more value out of this deal and many subreddits reopening validates that bet.

There's a lot to like about LinuxKit (github.com/linuxkit/linuxkit), at least in theory. It builds a complete bootable system image mostly out of OCI (Docker-compatible) container images. It has a minimal init (not systemd, but not SysV or BSD either). Seems to give a lot of control over the startup and shutdown process. But, I don't like putting the whole userland in a RAM disk (initrd). For at least one application that I may package in a VM image later, that would probably be a non-starter.
