> The entitlement and assumption of cultural superiority embodied in these ideas are absurd and offensive.

This is a pretty damning accusation, and the pan-African Python community members are not wrong in their outrage and disappointment.

> We ask the PSF to recognise our concerns, and not just to take them seriously, but to commit to working with the African Python community to address them, so that we do it together.

@Chip_Unicorn But it takes an entire 6+ inch Android screen to provide me with a keyboard to type and about 16 rows of characters (of which 4 are dedicated to other UI elements).

In the same vertical space it takes to display the paragraph above on my Android device in Tusky? All five rows of it? My Palm can show me 15 clear, manipulable lines of text. This paragraph is vertically taller than my entire on-screen keyboard on my Palm T|X.

@Chip_Unicorn To put it one way, the PalmOS UI can be radically more *space conservative* because it uses a one pixel stylus.

While one can reduce one's font size in many apps on Android, you cannot change the row height, because doing so makes individual rows too hard to manipulate – because our fat fingertips have to fit in there to select things.

Consequently, UIs on the Palm can show more information at a time (then do Android apps), without sacrificing manipulability. So they *do*.

PalmOS apps tend to have information denseness that you literally can't have on Android.

#curl 8.5.0 Windows binaries released. With faster CMake builds in "unity" mode, LibreSSL, smaller binaries, OpenSSF-recommended hardening options, and LLVM 17. (Same for Linux and macOS builds) /cc @bagder

Microsoft Outlook is blocking all emails from tutanota.com as spam. @Tutanota is understandably not happy at "radio silence" from Microsoft's support team.

An old high school PowerPoint

This was an old PowerPoint I created for high school. I wanted to make it as fun and accessible as possible, so I wouldn't have to read off everything right there. We were tasked to do a PowerPoint about a state that we picked and for some reason, I chose Hawaii. I still have no idea why to this day.

The Washington Post union is striking on Thursday, 7 December, and they’re asking people to not cross the picket line:

“For 24 hours, please do not engage with any Washington Post content. That includes our print and online news stories, podcasts, videos, games and recipes. Instead, share information about our strike and send a letter to Post leaders in support of the people who make this institution run.”

Today is the day @darius and I finally get to announce that we're in the new @DigInfFund cohort of projects, researching fediverse governance, so I…wrote about trees (nominally about the big root questions, but it's always trees, really).

Extremely happy to announce that @kissane and I have been funded by @DigInfFund to run a project called Fediverse Governance Successes & Gaps!

We will look at the people, software, and processes of the Fediverse, and make strong recommendations for how open source projects, philanthropic funders, civil society organizations, and others can co-create a Fediverse that is safer and better for humanity than the social media we've been stuck with for decades.

To the surprise of nobody whose worked on any collaborative projects at scale — people with toxic styles of engagement burn out the people actually doing the work and negatively affect the entire project.

This paper is specifically about Wikipedia, but like no shot this doesn’t apply to open source as well:

EU politics, waste reduction, positive

"On Monday night, Parliament and Council reached a provisional agreement on revising the EU’s ecodesign framework for sustainable products. [...] Specific product requirements will be outlined by the Commission through secondary legislation.
[...]
Negotiators agreed to specifically ban the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing accessories and footwear, two years after the entry into force of the law (six years for medium-sized enterprises). In the future, the Commission may add additional categories to the list of unsold products for which a destruction ban should be introduced."

(Note: this is a *provisional* agreement, many things can still change)

Note re: Tusky 24: Last year I was trying to contribute to Tusky by implementing one small, standalone feature per release (other team members do much more! but I'm still unsteady with Android dev). At the START of 2023, I decided my project was going to be upgrading our video player. This turned into a HUGE project that took literally all year and a lot of additional work by Nik Clayton but it's in now! Tusky now uses MODERN ANDROID VIDEO instead of ANCIENT ANDROID VIDEO mastodon.social/@Tusky/1115297…
