As of a few weeks ago, a bunch of their higher-level AWS stuff was still JS-only.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt I have done a whole deployment (to azure, natch) with it before and it was pretty good. The ability to build my *own* abstractions that could share infra with the codebase being deployed was a lot more valuable than ready-built high level stuff, to me at least

We've signed an open letter to the European Commission in support for @EC_NGI

Their funding has enabled us and many other FLOSS projects to develop and maintain great software, from which everybody benefits.

However, their own funding is probably cut next year, which would have a big negative impact to FLOSS projects.

Inspired by someone's TweeseCake sessions getting fried a few weeks ago, I just threw together this little tool to help back up and restore TweeseCake session data. It runs inside a terminal and has no progress bars because I can't code, but hey, it works. Also, TweeseCake in portable mode isn't supported for now, only installed TweeseCake. seediffusion.cc/programs/Twees…

It hurts a lot. I am bereft.

This is a photo from a fun evening we had together last year. I am grateful for the joy we shared and it feels incomprehensible that we will never share joy again.

Oh no. I had enjoyed some of Mel's blog posts that you had linked in the past.

I'm sorry for your loss :(

I got several questions on what's new with Version 7 of the Ray-ban Meta Smart glasses. The URL of the release notes follows: These features and improvements will become available starting the week of July 31, 2024.

Respond without 'Hey Meta'
Now you can make another request to your glasses after the first one without needing to say ‘Hey Meta’ again. Your glasses and mic will stay on and listen for a brief period after each request is complete. This feature will be on by default but you can turn it off from the Settings menu in the Meta View app.

Stay on track with the games in Paris
Get real-time info on the Paris Olympics, including medal counts, event times, results and athlete bios. You can also ask questions about your favorite athletes and games from past events. For example, ask “Hey Meta, which country is leading the gold medal in gymnastics?”

Improved Apple Music search
We are adding a setting to make it easier to recognize previously unrecognized tracks and enhance your Apple Music experience. To turn this on, go to Settings in the Meta View app, select Apple Music and turn on Improved Music Search.

Share photos to your Instagram Story hands-free
The feature is now supported in French and Italian in addition to English. Your glasses can capture and share photos completely hands-free to your Instagram Story. From the Meta View app, go to Settings, then tap Communication and connect your Instagram account. To share, say “Hey Meta, share a photo to my Instagram Story” or “Hey Meta, share my last photo to Instagram.”

Share to Facebook Stories from Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses
You can share photos you capture with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses to Facebook Stories. To share to Facebook Stories, make sure you’ve turned on voice interactions and connected your Facebook profile to the Meta View app.

Improvements
Bug fixes and performance improvements.

Early Access program
These features and improvements are available in the Early Access program.

Skip saying “look and” when you make a request to Meta AI
Early Access users can now say “Hey Meta” and ask Meta AI about what they see without saying “look and.”

in reply to Wil James

@drew Really looking forward to not having to say “look and”. When is July 31st? LOL

Techy people!

If you want to use Mastodon through a command line or a text-based interface, try the client Toot:

yep I'm with you on the compatibility aspect- developers are still not putting enough effort into releasing native AArch64 builds of common apps, some things like one-drive desktop or others that install drivers can't work through emulation, ETC. As much as part of me is also drewling over this, I'd rather buy a small mini-PC with battery and n100 chip (Full disclosure, I was looking for my Stockholm trip since I don't want to take 2 Macs, work and home)

We’re growing our product team!

Are you an #iOS Developer who wants to lead our official #Mastodon iOS #App?

This is a remote full-time position and requires an overlap with the CET timezone.

Ideally:

1. You are a senior iOS Developer comfortable with a mature codebase
2. Proficient in #Swift and #Apple Frameworks (UIKit, SwiftUI, Combine)
3. Prior experience with social media networks is a big plus!

An earthquake in the Apple community: AppleVis is shutting down. A huge loss for us in the disability community.

I learned how to use my iPhone 4 mainly through resources on Applevis. It did more than teach me. It inspired me to write a book to help other blind people make the most of their iPhones. I'm currently workin on the third edition. The loss of Applevis will be felt very keenly. Such a wonderfully helpful spot on the web.

IEEE's MAC address allocations have a weird pricing structure.

If you want to buy a 12 (aka 4096 addresses), that's $855 one time (or $0.20 per MAC address).

However you can buy 20 bits of space (1Mil addresses) for $2,030 one time !, and 24 bits (16Mil) for $3,375 one time !

I somewhat question the desire to buy 4096 MAC addresses when 1 million is only around 2x the price.

in reply to benjojo

I heard a story that cost of MAC addresses was a factor that caused IPv4 multicast to be designed to use only 23 bits from group id in the MAC address.

#QT dair-community.social/@timnitG… this is why I spent most of 2019 traveling the world talking about the harm inflicted in marginalized spaces when white folx refuse to acknowledge their complicity and allegiance to white supremacy and anti-Blackness

When white LGBTQ+ folx aren’t able to step outside whiteness, Black and brown folx must ignore their shared marginalized experiences in order to protect themselves from your racism and you become the “enemy”

FWIW your posts in recent days have raised a few peoples' consciousness, including mine. Among other things, Masto has an “invisible attacker” problem, i.e. nobody else can see the abuse that gets pushed into your face. While the people saying “it’s easy to fix, just fix it” are wrong - it’s a hard problem - that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be a priority. Thanks for raising your voice.

FYI. I saw this today when someone shared it in my Facebook feed, and it looks legitimate, as it also has a quote from OrCam. It is not entirely surprising, although I believe they were just exhibiting at the blindness conventions earlier this month.

in reply to Klaus

Rückmeldung vom Verlag:

"leider wird "Red Team Blues" weder jetzt noch in Zukunft als Hörbuch erhältlich sein. Es tut mir leid, dass Sie sich bereits auf die akustische Version der Geschichte gefreut haben."

in reply to Klaus

Here is a brand new ad for friend, an "AI" hardware product.

I can't speak to the merits of the product from an ad or a teaser site.

But on scifi, I am expert. And I think it's absolutely wild they're going full Black Mirror here. It invites so many questions.

Do they MEAN to go Black Mirror? Do they KNOW they're going Black Mirror?

Is this a wink and a nod? Is this a consequence of the ~Cerebral Valley~ echo chamber? I am very, very curious!

in reply to bsky: @daniloc.xyz

I'm surprised that they think people want that. I'd want an AI "friend" speaking to me in my ear; there's surely plenty of precedent for that in science fiction.
