I got several questions on what's new with Version 7 of the Ray-ban Meta Smart glasses. The URL of the release notes follows: These features and improvements will become available starting the week of July 31, 2024.

Respond without 'Hey Meta'
Now you can make another request to your glasses after the first one without needing to say ‘Hey Meta’ again. Your glasses and mic will stay on and listen for a brief period after each request is complete. This feature will be on by default but you can turn it off from the Settings menu in the Meta View app.

Stay on track with the games in Paris
Get real-time info on the Paris Olympics, including medal counts, event times, results and athlete bios. You can also ask questions about your favorite athletes and games from past events. For example, ask “Hey Meta, which country is leading the gold medal in gymnastics?”

Improved Apple Music search
We are adding a setting to make it easier to recognize previously unrecognized tracks and enhance your Apple Music experience. To turn this on, go to Settings in the Meta View app, select Apple Music and turn on Improved Music Search.

Share photos to your Instagram Story hands-free
The feature is now supported in French and Italian in addition to English. Your glasses can capture and share photos completely hands-free to your Instagram Story. From the Meta View app, go to Settings, then tap Communication and connect your Instagram account. To share, say “Hey Meta, share a photo to my Instagram Story” or “Hey Meta, share my last photo to Instagram.”

Share to Facebook Stories from Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses
You can share photos you capture with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses to Facebook Stories. To share to Facebook Stories, make sure you’ve turned on voice interactions and connected your Facebook profile to the Meta View app.

Improvements
Bug fixes and performance improvements.

Early Access program
These features and improvements are available in the Early Access program.

Skip saying “look and” when you make a request to Meta AI
Early Access users can now say “Hey Meta” and ask Meta AI about what they see without saying “look and.”

in reply to Wil James

@drew Really looking forward to not having to say “look and”. When is July 31st? LOL

@federicomena and other Rusters: what are the best examples of C->Rust rewrites?

As far as I understand it, this includes things like librsvg (incremental rewrite) but not coreutils (reimplementation from scratch).

This entry was edited (1 month ago)
in reply to Luis Villa

I ported my unreleased photo app from C++ to Rust, bits by bits. Currently the only C++ code is the one I import from a third party.

(source code is public)

Also ported libopenraw but this was a rewrite, keeping the C++ test suite.

Techy people!

If you want to use Mastodon through a command line or a text-based interface, try the client Toot:

➡️ toot.bezdomni.net

(NOTE: This has no connection to the mobile apps Toot! or Tooot. They just have similar names.)

@jak2k Do not fear! Ich könnte noch eine Zeile anfügen:

Dann schlüpft's aus dem Ei,

My politics are: we should have massive carbon taxes, massive land value taxes, and generous UBI.

Is there an existing label for that?

we got a new #curl security vulnerability reported *this morning*, and since we already had a patch release planned for tomorrow, well, we have worked like crazy through-out the day and the fix and the advisory and everything will be published tomorrow along with #curl 8.9.1

Never a dull moment in this factory.

yep I'm with you on the compatibility aspect- developers are still not putting enough effort into releasing native AArch64 builds of common apps, some things like one-drive desktop or others that install drivers can't work through emulation, ETC. As much as part of me is also drewling over this, I'd rather buy a small mini-PC with battery and n100 chip (Full disclosure, I was looking for my Stockholm trip since I don't want to take 2 Macs, work and home)

@FreakyFwoof I see a taste of magic finished. Is it worth the 18 hours or so, in your opinion?
in reply to Sean Randall

What? Of course. It's some of the best, most emotional journey-taking, well-written stuff in a very long time. 110% this. Go. Read. Speak in 2035.
in reply to Andre Louis

21 hours and 8 minutes listening time, actually, with all the author's notes and things factored in. Looking forward to it!
in reply to Derry Lawlor

@DerryLawlor
Magic is easy to see, to feel, to hear, to touch. The magic on the plate and the palate, however, is one that Magicals and Muggles alike can appreciate. Harry Potter will go on a journey to find the taste that he is looking for, and the magic that exists in meals made and meals shared.
An AU slice-of-life story with an eventual pairing.
[A Taste of Magic by WokFriedIce - Harry Potter -]](archiveofourown.org/works/4673…)
in reply to Sean Randall

@DerryLawlor the last thing I read called 'slice of life' was a book called the Wizard's Butler. I've reread it twice. wish I knew what about it was so attractive to me but it just sort of is!
in reply to Andre Louis

@DerryLawlor it's a novel about an army vet who gets employed by a wizard to keep house. On the surface, ridiculously boring. Not an HP thing.
in reply to Derry Lawlor

@DerryLawlor the fanfictions are all online already, I use a website called fichub.net to get me an ePub from either AO3 or fanfiction.net usually.

I get my paid-for books from Kindle yeah, although don't know how long I'll be able to keep stripping the drm out of those sadly.

in reply to Sean Randall

Thanks yes I will mis not been able to get the EPUB versions.
in reply to Sean Randall

I just got this and for some weird reason I can't put it down, I am just hoping he locks everybody else out of the house.
in reply to Derry Lawlor

@DerryLawlor Didn't know you enjoyed fanfiction Derry, good stuff!

Do you have 'the one', @FreakyFwoof? One that everyone must read no matter what?

in reply to Sean Randall

@DerryLawlor Don't think so, My personal favourite list is too much to have just a single one thing.
in reply to Derry Lawlor

@DerryLawlor You could perhaps pull my fanfic thread where I post things I'm reading, or that have finished being updated.
in reply to Andre Louis

@DerryLawlor that'll fuel you for months. it's a bloody rabbit hole. I just need to find the initial post again now
in reply to Sean Randall

No Sean to my shame this is the first Fan fiction book I have ever bought or read. what is the one I should read?
in reply to Derry Lawlor

@DerryLawlor oh gosh there are thousands out there!
I read a set called the Veil of Mystery and ring of reduction when I was young that stuck with me which I very much enjoyed. They're a bit preachy on reflection but they were special when I was a teen.

JAWS question for anyone who might have an answer. If you don't know, please indicate as much by not replying. On my work computer when I'm in Outlook, pressing the current line key, JAWS+8, tells me, corectly, that there are 0 items in my inbox, as I'm one of those weirdos who keep a clean inbox. But if I press JAWS+3 for the status line, it says items in view 5, where it used to say zero. Any ideas?

Opinated analysis of StackOverflow Survey 2024:

  • StackOverflow names for "Admired" and "Desired" are stupid and dumb and bad.
  • "Admired" means "I use it, and I want to keep using".
  • "Desired" means "I don't use it, but I want to."
  • Rust still the top Admired for another year (9th in a row?).
  • Rust ~80%, that means 1 in 5 Rust developers do not want to continue working with Rust.
  • Python is even worse: 1 in 3 developers want to quit (~66% Admired).
  • The curious point of Python is that it 50% of people not using Python want to use (top Desired).
  • There is notable number of Python users wanting to get out, while there are a huge number of users of not-Python wanting to get in.
  • Elixir is again in 2nd place as Admired and nobody actually mention this.
  • Elixir is also the second highest paying language.
  • I'm not a fan of Elixir syntax, but I guess its 2nd places should still be said.
  • C++ is ~50% Admired, meaning 1 in 2 C++ developers do not want to continue working with the language.
  • It is curious that the 3 top Admired languages -- Rust, Elixir and Zig -- are tackling hard problems of memory safety and concurrency.
  • The same "dislikeness" of having to use Python goes to pip.
  • Ruff, a Rust tool for Python, have 80% of Admired.
  • ~50% of CMake users want to get out of it.
  • Between CMake, Meson and Ninja ("common" build tools for C/C++), Ninja gets the least dislikes.
  • The most Admired build tool is... Cargo (go figure, right?)
  • Neovim Admired score is higher than Vim.
  • Emacs Admired score is higher than Vim but notably lower than Neovim.
  • The pay gab between Rust and Go is neglectable.
  • Cobol pays 5% better than Python.
  • Rust average salary is down 10% from last year.

I learned how to use my iPhone 4 mainly through resources on Applevis. It did more than teach me. It inspired me to write a book to help other blind people make the most of their iPhones. I'm currently workin on the third edition. The loss of Applevis will be felt very keenly. Such a wonderfully helpful spot on the web.

Hey guys, you don’t need a mother, sister, or daughter to care about women’s rights. It’s so nice to hear a man say, when asked “why do you support [policy that impacts women and girls]?”

“Because women’s rights are human rights. And I care about and support all women.” Not just because you are related to one.

IEEE's MAC address allocations have a weird pricing structure.

If you want to buy a 12 (aka 4096 addresses), that's $855 one time (or $0.20 per MAC address).

However you can buy 20 bits of space (1Mil addresses) for $2,030 one time !, and 24 bits (16Mil) for $3,375 one time !

I somewhat question the desire to buy 4096 MAC addresses when 1 million is only around 2x the price.

in reply to benjojo

I heard a story that cost of MAC addresses was a factor that caused IPv4 multicast to be designed to use only 23 bits from group id in the MAC address.
