Jiny projekt v custom runneru s pomoci kapitana kubie mel push -> live ~20 minut. Navic to byl masivni script plny hacku. Dev preview UX neporovnatelne.
Takze ja se pokusim oddelegovat mimo Vercel vsecko, co pujde a bude zrat ty Edge Requesty. A zbytek holt zaplatim.
Varianta je jeste napr mit ucet zvlast pro kazdou zemi. Za $20 dostanes 10M requestu.
@verosk Diky, je to tak, sluzby Vercelu bezi nad AWS cloudem. Je to trochu komplikovanejsi a psat bych o tom moh cely den. Ale v zasade to tak jednoduche neni, Vercel ma custom runner, ktery je brutalne optimalizovany a nahradit se da spis na EC2/EKS nez Lambdy. Ale ztrati se tim veskera vyhoda, proc to takhle delam.

I've updated the visualisation this time around with human-readable language names instead of their ISO-639 or BCP-47 language codes to make it it easier to read.
There's some interesting observations:
▶ Catalan (ca) continues to be leader in terms of data - speaking volumes about the efforts to revitalise culture and language in Catalunya. It's also one of the few languages that has data for all age groups, particularly older speakers - this sort of data is missing for most other languages.
▶ Kiswahili (sw) is one of the languages where there is more data for female-identifying speakers than for male-identifying speakers ♀ - although Japanese (ja), Western Mari (mrj) and Luganda (lg) do pretty well here, too!
▶ Sentence domains can now be categorised, and although most new sentences are "general", Albanian (sq) has a lot of sentences related to law and government.
▶ Tsonga (ts), a Bantu language spoken in Southern Africa, has dethroned Icelandic (is) as the language with the highest average utterance duration. I don't know enough about Tsonga to speculate why - it's a somewhat agglutinative language, but many Tsonga works are generally short.
▶ Bengali / Bangla (bn) has a significant amount of data that is not yet validated, and therefore does not appear in training / dev / test splits. There is a similar case for many languages new to Common Voice - it takes time to validate.
▶ The language with the highest number of average contributions per speaker is Taita (dav), a Bantu language from Kenya.

A few years ago, I gave my mother a WiFi picture frame for Christmas, from this company: pix-star.com/
This evening, I was visiting my parents for my niece's birthday, and when someone mentioned the picture frame, I got to thinking about how far a photo goes when my mother sends it from her phone or tablet, to the associated cloud service, and then it gets downloaded to the picture frame, especially when she's sitting in the same room as the frame. 1/?
To send photos from her phone to the picture frame, she uses her Gmail app to send an email to an email address at mypixstar.com. I figured a custom email-receiving service like that wouldn't be likely to have something equivalent to a CDN, so it should be pretty easy to tell where the emails are going. 2/?
I thought I remembered Pix-Star being based in France. And, sure enough, mail.mypixstar.com points to an OVH server in France.
As it happens, we're in the US. I'm aware, of course, that much more often, including with products I've developed, the situation is the reverse, that is, a non-US user sending their data to the US. To be clear, I have nothing against France. But even my mom agrees, it seems crazy that the data is going that far away. 3/?
We used to send files across local networks, without them going out to a possibly distant Internet service and back, all the time. But try using SMB on a phone or tablet. Especially if you happen to be away from home when sending the photo.
Oh, I forgot to add, I *was* initially apprehensive about buying this product, aware that it might fall into the category of "Internet of shit". But I wanted to buy a nice Christmas present for my mother, and didn't have any better ideas at the time. I think my brother-in-law recommended this one. And so far it has worked well enough.
It occurred to me that the ideal solution would be some kind of DIY picture frame using a Raspberry Pi. But I'm not good at building hardware projects like that, and I'm sure I didn't have enough spare time to do something like that in time for Christmas that year.
for what it’s worth, I use SMB on phones and tablets all the time, and it works pretty well, if not seamlessly. I rarely bother with it for photos because other solutions are more convenient, but with large videos it makes a big difference in terms of both speed and cost. And thanks to Unifi Teleport, I frequently do it while away from home. This tech mostly isn’t in reach of consumers due to lack of demand, which means it’s priced for prosumers.
the difficulty is that the benefits are “data sovereignty” (not a problem until it’s a huge problem; if there is a benefit you never see it, it’s just a problem you don’t have) and “pricing for very large data volumes”. The latter is definitely something that someone who makes a lot of home movies could have, for example; that’s where most of my usage is these days. Well, that, and the hilariously inefficient way time machine does backups.

I have been lucky enough not to have any serious issues. And I am annoyed with many parts of the product offering, and some of their security is not as good as I would like. But the criticism always overlooks the balancing elements in this equation: it gives access to enterprise-level features and a single pane of glass management setup with automatic updates and staggered rollouts with *significantly* less effort than even most consumer gear, let alone a bespoke solution like OpenWRT
@glyph I bought a few of their APs for my home, running the management software on my server. I hadn't realised at the time that they seem to be trying to deprecate this setup in favour of running the management software on Unifi hardware instead.
It'd probably be a lot more pleasant if I had a Unifi Console device like their router, but self-hosting feels like an afterthought now.
The way it should work is that I can transfer a file from one computer of mine to another over the internet. Except if the devices are on the same network, it's routed locally instead. And if the transfer is still a bit slow I should be able to just connect the devices with a USB C to C cable and have it automatically start transferring data over that.
I'm not sure what the best technical approach to achieving that is, but it's not fundamentally that difficult.
If you want vendors to adopt a standard for this, though, it may be hard when those companies have a business model focused on providing cloud services. And/or a focus on vendor lock-in to their own services, rather than any universal standard.
@ids1024 Well for this particular product, I'd think the natural incentive would be to *avoid* running a service, since it's a one-time purchase. I brought up that point with my mother, wondering how long the service would last. And yes, I should have taken that into account when I first bought the thing.
True. I more mean Microsoft, Google, and Apple in particular. The ideal solution for this should be a standard that's also integrated in Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android so it all just works out-of-the-box and intuitively with the devices people are using.
Otherwise, I guess email is still the best you can get for a universal standard that people are familiar with.
the German router manufacturer AVM offers a free dyndns service together with its routers, so you could connect to your home network via Wireguard or VPN without needing a static IP. It works quite well, even from the other side of the globe. Setting it up is doable for a technically apt user and using it is as easy as tapping a button on your phone.
And here Ithought we Europeans were the only ones concerned about our data. Here we usually think the other way around, EU data privacy policies are so much more strict than US ones, so we try to avoid sending data over sea as much as possible if we can keep it here.
I'd seen these frames before and was sceptical about buying one for this reason, but you've given me an idea for a Christmas present now. My parents really like having pictures of us on the wall, so I may go with it anyway.
