Microsoft details security/privacy overhaul for Windows Recall ahead of relaunch

Recall nearly launched as a scraper that stored all its data in plaintext.

If you are on a professional mailing list and you are raising an issue, don't use "Am I Senile" as your subject line, because it doesn't tell your list members anything about if this is something they want to read or not. At least categorize your question in the subject line.
in reply to Bruce Toews

So many people on those lists have no emaiil ettiquette. The stupid subject lines and the one-line "thanks" emails are the worst.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield I have to admit to being a "thanks" guy from time to time. I did it once and someone got mad and tried to flood my mailbox by sending several thousand messages to me. This was in the early days of the Internet. I told him there seemed to be something wrong with his system, and he told me no, he was doing it to get back at me for saying Thanks on a mailing list.
in reply to Just Martin

@mcourcel @DavidGoldfield Or my favorite subject line, "Might be slightly off-topic", and of course that means it's completely and totally off-topic.
in reply to Just Martin

@mcourcel This is why I rarely moderate lists these days, except for a few low-traffic ones. Even sending out posting guidelines on a regular basis doesn't improve things. When I gave up comoderating the Braille Display Users list it probably did wonders for my mental health.

I've been aware of the existence of gitlab.com/kop316/phosh-antisp… for quite a while, but didn't pay too much attention as I didn't need it... Until I did!

Thanks @kop316 for this now-mandatory piece of software ❤️🎉

@federicomena I went there once, visited the place a bit, but didn't bathe in there… Don't remember if it was closed on that day, or if it was just because I hate having fun 🤔

@federicomena Can we have Björk narrate the release video for whatever GNOME version would come after that GUADEC?

Some vulnerability scanner is now (again) saying that #curl in Windows is vulnerable to some CVE.

It's time for Discussion Friday again~!

I woke up really hungry so in my quest to make everyone as hungry as I am, we're going to talk about food.

Does reading make you hungry? Have you read a particular good description of food or cooking in a c-novel* that made you salivate? Or perhaps you've read something that sounds absolutely atrocious (which makes you want to try it for Science). Did anything you read inspire you to cook, or seek that dish out?

Share them and let's make everyone hungry!

*feel free to very loosely interpret c-novel here for Discussion Friday, e.g., Chinese web-novels, Chinese novels, Chinese novellas/short stories, other language novels translated into Chinese, novels by Chinese (nationality or diaspora) published in non-Chinese language

Darl McBride has passed away. If you are a Linux fan/advocate/user of a certain age, that name probably stirs some feelings - none of them good.

The SCO debacle was a real eye-opener about the depths that people are willing to go to for money. There's cut-throat, take-no-prisoners business... and then there's outright shameless malfeasance.

It was, at least for me, the end of starry-eyed optimism that FOSS would change the world without being changed by it in return.

ARE YOU NOT SUPPOSED TO FIGHT FOR US?!?

@hub
In at least the past 20 years, excluding Harper's #prorogation in 2008 to prevent the LPC-NDP-BQ coalition non-confidence motion to replace his government, in the year preceding the election Québec Parliament/Government has made efforts to enforce the use of French at the expense of its Anglophone population.

It seems a lamentable, but not unexpected, strategy re-used because it the parties in charge at the time keep getting away with it.

Unexpected screen reader behavior: TalkBack spells letters phonetically upon navigating on the App or Home screen even when its corresponding setting is disabled: accessibleandroid.com/bugs/tal…
in reply to Accessible Android

Ah it already forgot it after the phone locked so yeah it's a bit werse than before, but this is a very old bug, like android 10 or 11 era talkback. Also affects #voiceview on amazon Fire devices I believe.
in reply to D.Hamlin.Music

@dhamlinmusic Please note that we're not telling if it's new or old. We're simply specifying the TalkBack and Android version number on which this has been recorded.

Free memory safety for everyone: qemu for a CHERI VM, qubes for all apps on top of that. Checkmate, rustaceans.

I'm guessing you're joking. Emulating CHERI on non-CHERI hardware would probably be slow.
in reply to Matt Campbell

@matt This toot exists in a quantum surperposition of a shitpost and a great idea. To know which, you'll have to try it.

Elevenlabs, Dropbox and every other company that does this, if I have to Google sign in plus your company name in order to actually find the login page of your website, you have what is known in the business as a badly designed website. Fix it. I cannot believe this is seriously the case in fucking 2024.

Just a reminder that CVE ratings are supposed to take into account user interaction and attack complexity and we have completely jumped the shark if logos and PR are influencing that.
in reply to Lesley Carhart

Here’s a fun fact: at my employer, we actually painstakingly re-evaluate and re-rate CVEs for process environments, because of the potential substantial differences in attack methods and process impact in industrial environments versus enterprise. It’s -that important- to consider all the criteria of attack viability and impact when saying which vulnerabilities are the most severe. Otherwise vulnerability management in general becomes an impossible challenge, I’m flummoxed.

Adults often complain that their kids ask pointless and unanswerable questions like "what's your favorite letter?" But when my kids asked me those I often had a considered answer ready. (Mine is T. Least favorite is V.)

I don't know whether that made things better for them or worse than for other kids with more typical parents. That particular thing was probably better, but the aspects of my personality that gave rise to that particular surface feature probably came out in other ways less amusing.

@Tutanota
Tuta contact is in the application tuta mail or is contact tuta separate? Thank you
@Tuta

From the people who brought you Type I and Type II errors:

· Factorising and collecting like terms are now "a class A manoeuvre" and "a class B manoeuvre".
· Topology is now known as "subtopic 7V".
· Pythagoras' theorem is now "Statement π".

Further terminology changes will happen if anyone starts to look like they understand.

I just love string interpolation with dollar signs in #CSharp. so much more concise than String.Format, especially when writing log messages!
in reply to André Polykanine

@bigolewannabe I think someone else already answered, but since serilog supports structured logging, you can have a much better output by naming the values in the message template and passing the values in instead of using string interpolation
There are analyzers to guide you toward that pattern too
github.com/serilog/serilog/wik…
in reply to ESG

@esg @bigolewannabe What about exception messages, is it OK to have $-interpolation there or not either?
in reply to André Polykanine

@bigolewannabe No! Even worse 😅
Each logging method have an overload, taking the exception as the first parameter
ex:
```
Logger.Information(exception, "Something bad happened here");
```
This entry was edited (1 month ago)
in reply to ESG

@esg @bigolewannabe I mean, when I throw: `Throw new SomeFancyException($"...")`. Also no-no? Sorry, it's my first year in .NET 🙏🏻
in reply to André Polykanine

@esg @bigolewannabe If you throw the exception as well, then yes, it is fine because there is no other possible execution branch continuing. That said, you should always throw an exception right after construction anyway, so there's no issue there. However throwing an exception just to log it is a bit of an anti-pattern as well, you should log and then throw when possible (allows to generate logger properties which can later be filtered/used with structured logging).
in reply to MaxiTB

@maxitb @esg @bigolewannabe Oh yeah, thanks, I do log then throw, I asked just to make sure throwing with $"" messages is fine.
in reply to André Polykanine

@esg @bigolewannabe Yes it is ok and it is what you should actually do because it is not a message template.

Uploading pictures is again possible. We ditched IMGUR all together and are now adding pictures to a custom @panoramax -instance (namely panoramax.mapcomplete.org). Thanks to @thibaultmol for doing the hosting! #OpenStreetMap
in reply to MapComplete

How can one contribute to panoramax?
Is it possible with the osm account?
in reply to FediVerseExplorer

@fexplorer What do you mean exactly? uploading images you mean? or like providing translations or something?

uploading on the mapcomplete panoramax instance can only be done via mapcomplete.org and adding images on individual images.

if you want to record many images (for actual street imagery), then you'd have to upload to a different instance (like panoramax.openstreetmap.fr )

in reply to Thibault Molleman🇧🇪 🌈🐝

Thanx, I mean uploading street imagery. It seems, that for now, it dosn't exist a german panoramax instance? Is it intended to have different panoramax instances or will panoramax.openstreetmap.fr be the only one?
in reply to MapComplete

That's awesome! Could that instance allow upload from other sources (such as Android apps similar to StreetComplete) to contribute to OSM?

Hello everyone! :lgbtqosm:

We are a new community #DEI initiative for #OpenStreetMap hoping to become a respected group to improve diversity all around the OpenStreetMap community!

To introduce myself, I'm Freya (@Venefilyn) and I created this as I found a lack of a community initiative to increase accessibility coverage within OpenStreetMap and be a safe space for individuals and groups who want to find others like-minded and strive for a safe space in organizing events or other things! 🙏

in reply to DEI Team

With 'accessibility', I suspect you mean accessibility for #wheelchair users? Or also for e.g. #blind of #deaf persons?

In either case, there is mapcomplete.org/onwheels which has support for some accessibility tagging. Of course, more tags are always welcome

in reply to MapComplete

@MapComplete Definitely! We want to highlight tools such as MapComplete or WheelMap as they serve as great points to improve accessibility around the place. Lots of different kinds of groups need accessibility in one way or another, which is all around you if you know where to look :D

I do not want to rush in with 100 different events or ideas to tackle, I want to start small and build a community with trust and respect, but yes 100% vision-impaired and hearing-impaired is included

/Freya

in reply to MapComplete

@MapComplete Thanks for sharing the OnWheels resources! 🚗 I wasn't aware of mapcomplete.org/onwheels, but it looks like a fantastic tool for adding accessibility tags to OpenStreetMap. 🗺️ I'll definitely check it out and start contributing. 💻

Dame Maggie Smith, star of the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey, has died at the age of 89

A statement from Dame Maggie's sons says she died peacefully in hospital on Friday morning

Fellow Downton Abbey actor Hugh Bonneville says she was a "true legend of her generation" with a "sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent"

A legend of British stage and screen, Dame Maggie won two Oscars during her career - for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1970 and California Suite in 1979

in reply to Robin Frost

@robini71 Oh, I absolutely adored Downton Abbey. Watched the first movie but never finished the second one. It was an amazing series.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield Aww yay I agree. It is kind of my happy place one of my favorite series to revisit.

For those who don't understand how Americans relate a waffle restaurant to weather events:

Waffle House restaurants are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They do NOT close for ANY reason except impending catastrophe.

So when Waffle House reports that all locations in a city have been closed due to weather, that area is most likely fucked after the storm is over.

Super excited to have all the seasons of Stargate SG-1 described now. I suppose that's what I'll be doing for my birthday, that show needed description pretty badly and the TTS one is better than I expected it to be. (for those curious, it's on both Audiovault and Amazon Prime, I first started with vault but had better audio through my own prime so I switched to it.) Amazon page: amazon.com/Stargate-SG-1-Seaso…

Does anyone who does #GUI programming and uses or has users who use a #ScreenReader or #BrailleTerminal have the scoop on how well Tk (the GUI toolkit of Tcl, accessed via Tkinter in Python) integrates with these tools?

I saw some references to #accessibility as an area of focus in the 8.5 roadmap, and with 9.0 out now, I'd really like to use it - but I need to be able to support screen reader users.

in reply to Matt Campbell

@alterae The Toga project from BeeWare is probably worth a look. It's just too bad they have to bring in .NET as a dependency on Windows so they can use Windows Forms. I understand, though; there are probably very few programmers left who want to work directly with Win32.

Regarding todo list management: yesterday, @bill told me about todo.txt. If you love Markdown, you'll probably love this. Your todos are stored in a human-readable file, but the file conforms to some simple rules to let computers help you manage it. There are a bunch of apps for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and CLI, and making your own seems pretty easy. As long as your text file is shared (NextCloud, Dropbox, iCloud), you can sync your list across your devices.

I'm thinking of all my friends and family in Florida and the Carolina's this morning, as the effects of monster hurricane Helene are felt across the entire region with Helene having made landfall last night around the Florida panhandle Big Bend area. It will be peaceful down there again soon enough, but wow I'm amazed at the fury of mother nature when events like this happen.
