We could really use some help. I've been sick for about a week now, and haven't had the spoons to post, but reaching the point now where I dont have a choice. We are out of money ($17.33 total to our names atm), and we have a lot of bills coming due, including $275.67 if we don't want our electricity disconnected on the 18th, $300 for our overdue income tax payment arrangement which was supposed to have been paid on the 8th, $168.84 for our water, $226.46 for our phones, another $567.83 at the start of next month for them to not take our car.

The BlindShell 3 looks okay, if pricy. It has a touchscreen and an app store now. (Aurora Store, for anyone curious.) But it's astoundingly expensive, surpassing the iPhone SE and many powerful Android phones in price, and yet it still has only 3 GB RAM, 32 GB storage, and whatever Android version runs comfortably on that kind of hardware. Maybe the target audience doesn't care, but I wouldn't be surprised if some apps already don't run on it, and in another five years that'll be even more true. I wish people who need or want button phones didn't have to make that kind of compromise. Realistically, if I were still working as an AT trainer, I know for a fact I'd be telling people about this phone, but I also know they'd run up against software and hardware limitations. It's just a matter of deciding whether pure touchscreen is more annoying than outdated, expensive hardware and all that comes with it. Also, note that I'm not blaming the company for any of this; I have no way to know whether the price they're charging for it is fair, given the costs associated with manufacturing a device that will be vastly less popular than mainstream phones, the likely lack of a favourable bulk contract with whatever company produces the chips they're using, the cost of development, etc. It could be a completely fair price. It's certainly less revolting than paying $6000 for an outdated tablet with a Braille display attached. But let's be honest, most of you reading this post have probably spent more money on at least one phone. As a person who still appreciates buttons and likes to hack on Android devices, I wish I *could* justify one of these, but it's definitely not going to happen.

My guess is that many of BlindShell's customers are just wanting a tactile phone that they can call and text with. Anything extra is a nice bonus but I suspect that, for most of their customers, it's more than enough phone for their needs. That is in no way meant as an insult. There are lots of consumers who want a phone with basic features which is both tactile and accessible. Believe me, with VoiceOver on iOS being as flaky as it is, sometimes a phone like that sounds very tempting to me.

@DavidGoldfield Yeah, I totally understand that. It hink the Blindshell is at the point where most of the people I know who had trouble with touchscreens could use it easily, and that's excellent. And it sure does sound nice sometimes with Voiceover and Talkback both having their own unique brand of weirdness.

I doubt I would ever give up my iPhone and go to something like a BlindShell because I'd be giving up too many features that are too important to me. But I'll bet it's a perfect phone for a lot of people.

@DavidGoldfield Also, phones like it are good as secondary phones though, again, bought used. I have a Smartvision which I'm using as a sound and USB transmitter/receiver. It has yet to see a SIM card, but works very well as it is, and the SIM is always an option.

You know what’s interesting about this log line? It repeats 56,686,963 times in www.kernel.org logs for yesterday, across 4 nodes. That’s about 700 times a second, and this has been going on for months.

These requests aren’t intentionally malicious – they issue a simple GET /, receive their 301 redirect, and terminate the connection. From what I can tell, this is some kind of appliance or software installed on mobile clients that uses “can I reach www.kernel.org” as a network test.

This wouldn’t be that big of a deal – a single plaintext “GET /“ that triggers an immediate 301 is very cheap for us to generate, but the number of these requests has been steadily growing.

If you have any idea what this is and how to make it stop, please reach out?
