It’s hilarious how openly hostile @element has become toward its own users. Calling them free-riders¹ for not purchasing premium support is just bizarre. Imagine a project like nginx doing that. If you don’t want to be an open-source project, just stop.

I've donated to both you and Signal, so a lot of people aren't averse to spending money if they think it's a worthy product and they have some extra cash. Antagonizing users by calling them "free riders" however will cause those of us who would have donated to not only not do that, but not recommend an app or service to others who also might have eventually donated or bought something.

Delta Chat has been affected by the funding cuts by the Trump administration. We need messaging technology that is secure, usable and not tied to Big Tech infrastructure. Please donate to the project if you can afford to: chaos.social/@delta/1142113004…

Bummer. Last week our OpenTechFund contract was not signed but suspended along with OTF itself. Shit happening overseas.

However, we wouldn't deliver resilient messaging infrastructure and apps if we weren't a resilient and fun community. We never had much money to begin with, and are graced with great pro-bono contributions.

We are now looking for other public funding but it takes time. Meanwhile it'd be great to get intermittent help via a wealthy donor or small tips delta.chat/en/donate

Love this really nice write-up on embeddings in the context of LLMs, what they are and how they work. Incidentally, while reading this article, I discovered that VoiceOver on iOS supports MathML. That's quite nice! huggingface.co/spaces/hesamati…

Beeping, "ding" noises, various one off sound effects, forget that. Give me ambient-grade chord progressions for work that's going well. Switch to a minor key for degraded performance. Other programs can chime in with complementary instruments if they're working at the same time. Give me broken chords or discordance on error. What Linux really needs is an audio library with some real symphonic ambition.

Had a mail server that used to crash for reasons unknown every few days. As part of diagnosis, I made a monitor that would check status every 5 minutes and either play chirping burds if everything was healthy, or breaking glass if it wasn't, so I could do other things but be aware of the status.

When I started a site that did paid access, I added a cash register sound whenever a credit card was successfully charged, and our CFO used to sit in the datacenter on a stool giggling every time it went off.

I do cloud now, but there was something to be said about sitting right next to the stack. You could hear when things changed. Maybe I need to make something subtle that tells me about wifi traffic...

The XMPP Software Foundation has published an open letter to Meta, asking them to support true messaging interoperability using the XMPP protocol.

Meta had previously integrated this protocol, and WhatsApp is actually built on XMPP for its message routing system.

We support this initiative as it represents the best approach for genuine interoperability. Federation is the way to go !

Learn more by reading the open letter: xmpp.org/announcements/open-le…
