Geeky stuff aside, let's enjoy the hottest friday party ever. @Marek Macko is on air again with his awesome show called #playgroundLive. #dance, #trance, a bit of #hardStyle, #eurodance, #90s and other party genres in an incredible live mix performance lasting a few hours spiced up with some random chat messages of fellow listeners and friends.

Physicists at Cornell University figured out how to chop onions without crying and the results are FASCINATING.

tl;dr chopping quickly with a blunt knife releases larger onion juice droplets at higher velocities resulting in more contact with your eyes and thus, more tears. Slower slicing with a sharp knife = less tears.

I meant to re-post this for #GAAD!

This article by @dadederk is a great reminder of many truths about doing #accessibility work: focus on systems, not short term goals, be persistent and resilient, and work w/ a network/community however you can!

Yesterday I complained that “someone put math in my programming” when this slide came up at #ElixirConfEU

@federicomena replied: “Esa diapositiva no tiene el estilo de LaTeX beamer? No puede ser buena señal 🤣🤣🤣”

Which means: “doesn’t that slide have LaTeX Beamer styling? That can’t be a good sign”

To which I replied: “Oye chico! Las mías también son de Beamer!” ie “hey dude, mine are also from Beamer”

Federico: 🤐 😇

Microsoft claims that 30% of the code is already generated by AI. Why isn't it 100%.
So I tried it.
I "created" an application whose code is 100% generated by AI. I didn't write a single line of code.
The goal was not to create some large or complex application. Simply just a test.
If you are interested, the app is available on Google Play (currently not for iOS, maybe later).
I may publish the source codes later, but for now only here: play.google.com/store/apps/det…

What about my impressions? At the beginning it was very good. As the project gained in complexity, the problems grew. AI changed parts of the code that it should have kept or discarded them completely. I often had to point out completely obvious but essential precautions, etc. This means that some experience in application development or design was needed to fully develop this way.

I love #joplin so much. I find myself using it to publish long documents that I want others to read that are well formatted, but in plain HTML so can't be edited, and live on my server. Better than a PDF by far, and markdown makes including tables and other complicated layout easy. The only improvement I'd love is the ability to see how many visits a published note got. I don't need browser and IP and location and all that stuff. Just a number, so I can know if a link I shared with a single person was viewed by them.

I've tried Obsidian, Silverbullet and Trilium Next, all of which had very significant accessibility issues I discovered within the first minute that made them not viable.

#Joplin was such a delight in comparison. There are minor bugs I've noticed, but nothing that prevents me from being productive. Thanks (@joplinapp for the amazing work.

The main thing I'm trying to figure out is setting up a build pipeline to export my public notes to .md and publishing it as a static site.

if you're an EU citizen please vote for the petition to ban conversion therapy in the EU eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/

its very close (19,000 left) despite looking like it was never gonna make it and its down to the wire. if you use the form method all you gotta do is put in your name and address. takes 2 minutes (maybe 4 cause the site is slow atm)

please 🙏

edit: the info required changes depending on what country you're from but if you're dutch like me the form method is super quick and easy

At least one article about #Eurovision I generally agree with. independent.co.uk/voices/eurov… #ESC2025

This you didn't see on telly.

You did see Erika Vikman's expression but not, what caused it.

Just think about it - you'd be 7 meters high, and all in a sudden there'd be an explosion next to you.

And you would be singing a long note on a tv show watched by 200 millions people.

Gosh, what a professional she is!

Welcome Jacob Mealey as #curl commit author 1375: github.com/curl/curl/pull/1736…
#curl

If the web has really reduced to the state where people are actively trying to persuade you from running services yourself, we really have utterly fucked it all up.

Yes, run your own mail server (go get @mwl 's book on it). Yes run your own DNS, stop leaking all your look ups to clownfair or Google). Yes control your software supply chain.

And definitely host your own git repo (with forjo or similar)

Stop centralisation of the decentralised web and internet.

Guy runs a hosting startup, so I'm not surprised. This sort of 'advice' has been going around in startup circles for a very, very long time, unfortunately...

The people giving this advice also invariably have extremely limited (and often no) experience with self-hosting things, and systematically overestimate the difficulty of Linux administration tasks, and *underestimate* the difficulty of interacting with SaaS/PaaS APIs and dashboards.

It's like the people arguing "AWS makes hosting so much simpler than running your own servers" and then hiring specialized "AWS engineers", ie. sysadmins who can only work with vendor-specific systems...

Email is critical infrastructure in today's digitalized world. Relying on foreign hosting is not a good idea for anybody at risk of political interference because of their profession.
Hosting email locally is still very much possible, even if it gets more involved year over year. Email is the one federated protocol that we have for direct communication. Even with all of its deficiencies in security and privacy, it is the common denominator that connects people. Don't give up control over your own, most basic digital communication channel. Use local hosting companies that you can still call in an emergency, ideally within your own (maybe extended, like EU level) jurisdiction.

Context: eupolicy.social/@bert_hubert/1…

Update: As pointed out by @ilumium, depending on your threat model, using an explicitly foreign email service provider can be beneficial if your *local* government is the main threat actor. However, if the local government can physically get you or your client devices, then don't assume too much protection through the email service.

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has lost access to his (Microsoft) email and bank accounts. Prosecutions are faltering now. This all due to US sanctions. 'Microsoft did not respond to a request for comments'. Yet European governments are collectively moving their email and files to Microsoft, risking similar problems if they ever upset the US administration. apnews.com/article/icc-trump-s…
