> I have to pass 256Kb of text as an argument to the "aws sqs"

what, uhhh, what

> MAX_ARG_STRLEN is defined as 32 times the page size in linux/include/uapi/linux/binfmts.h:
> The default page size is 4 KB so you cannot pass arguments longer than 128 KB.
> I modified linux/include/uapi/linux/binfmts.h to #define MAX_ARG_STRLEN (PAGE_SIZE * 64), recompiled my kernel and now your code produces

casually patching the kernel to send a quarter megabyte as a *single* argument oh my god i'm laughing hard

in reply to kloenk

Back when 128 kB was the limit for argv+envp, Google was hitting it too because they passed all the configuration for their whole software stack on the command line as --long-option=value switches.

Their solution? Compress the command line. So every binary started by ungzipping argv[1] and parsing it to get the configuration.

The person explaining this to me saw my horrified face, and said with the perfect Hide The Pain Harold smile: "a series of individually completely rational and reasonable decisions led to this." and I have been thinking a lot about it since.

Baha! I knew there was a reason I liked AdGuard. You can now block Microsoft's recall with it. Yay! adguard.com/en/blog/adguard-fo…

THANK YOU! WE DID IT! Just 85 days into my Sell 100 Albums in 100 Days, we have achieved our goal! Yesterday's sale at Ampwall tipped us over the threshold to 100 album sales (including full discography sales) since release day.

Check out the album that at least 100 people were willing to pay real money for!

I don’t think I’m remotely alone in finding the pathetic and spineless response of world leaders to the war in Gaza absolutely disgusting.

How fucking hard is it to simply DO THE RIGHT THING?

Why? Why the fuck can’t they do the right thing?

Yes, there will be consequences. Yes there will be pushback. Yes there will be spurious accusations of antisemitism. But so what?

I’m so disgusted with almost all of them.

During WWII MANY governments knew what was going on inside Germany, but they were also engaged in a world war.

Here, there’s no excuse. Every single leader in the world KNOWS they are watching genocide (or at the very least ethnic cleansing, if they’re too squeamish for the other word).

How the fuck have they convinced themselves they can somehow tiptoe through this morally, ethically, historically.

It speaks volumes about how amoral they are, to how stupid and short sighted they are.

in reply to Madeleine Morris

You know, I absolutely understand the argument that there is very little most countries (other than the US) can do to stop this. But there is something - they can call it what it is. They can stop trading with the perpetrators. They can stop pretending not to see the enormity of the atrocity.

Because this moral deficit, this failure to even be a clear-eyed witness… this is unforgivable. Historically unforgivable.

Meta to stop selling political ads in the EU from October techcrunch.com/2025/07/25/meta… The EU "mandates companies selling ads to clearly label political ads; provide information about their sponsor, the election or referendum they concern, what the ad cost, and targeting mechanisms used".

Meta is sad: “we’re seeing regulatory obligations effectively remove popular products and services from the market".

With whom is micro-targeted brainwashing popular, you shady zuckwits?

So…in theory sure, it’s always easy to look at the board from the side and say, coulda, shoulda, but we don’t get process improvement by ignoring the miserable realities of human stress responses. While I don’t know for sure, there’s a decent chance that this is the first time some, maybe all, of the principals in this are navigating an insider threat with no runbook, no training, no clear lines of support. When you’re already panicking, a panic-stop is a good idea!

Bookworm's text DAISY support is moving in a good direction, rather slowly of course. With yesterday's modifications, Bookworm can now use heading navigation and bring up the Elements list in text DAISY books. However, links still cannot be activated in such books. github.com/blindpandas/bookwor…

How to find out that you are possibly in a country with a TT earthing system:
- you still find some unearthed sockets, especially in dry rooms,
- you will see two-pole circuit breakers everywhere, because you cannot trust that the voltage between N and earth is always safe,
- you will see RCDs everywhere because earth loop has high resistance

In the case of Spain, I see C10 circuit breakers everywhere. I wonder whether it has something to do with the code or just this place.

Mapcomplete.org ist getting better and better.

A few days ago I discovered that its possible to add manmade bird nests. I was standing near a stork's nest when I found the topic. And directly added a picture.

I also found by chance that beehives can be added. And that there are also viewpoints to add under the theme of nature.

It would be nice if there was some information and not find by chance.

something new thats still hidden under some Theme?

#Conversations_im 2.19.0 is available on #FDroid and Google Play. Please upgrade!

2.19.1 is in the pipeline with some minor bug fixes.

The next version will also show the 'Last Seen' timestamp a little more prominently for those who have Last Seen enabled. (and the underlying algorithm has been modified)

Do you think we should use the subtitle to show number of participants in public conferences now that we made subtitles a part of the UI anyway?

There is no sovereign country in the EU.
If the email was hosted in country Y, DT would call prime minister of Y and ask them to block the email. They would comply. Proof? It's in the pudding - no EU country has expelled the US ambassador over the actual blocking. That happened.

This also makes it difficult to have a sighted colleague teach you how to use that one extra tool you need to go about your job-related tasks. My onboardings were a nightmare because of that. Still remembering fondly how I had to take an express course in Audacity to learn the basics in a couple of days for a traineeship. The task we got was: split the music bed we provided you into bars so that you can copy and paste them again and again to make the bed longer. „Bars? What do you mean by bars?” „You know, on the screen, the music is split into bars.” „Perfect, I can't see that.” Three days later: "So how do you split into bars by keyboard?" "Well, I press ctrl and I." - Turns out they meant clips all along.

after aggressively ignoring YouTube Shorts since their introduction, and Google continuing to force it onto my subscriptions page, I have finally taken the effort to locate a userscript that removes them from the site (I also read the code because I'm suspicious and reading code is fun). It does appear to work :)

Tomorrow, Friday 25 at 11:40 CET I will be presenting about Cambalache, a new rad tool for Gtk 4, at #guadec
