Watching someone explain to a FOSS developer that they've never donated to their project "because it's FOSS" and that, unless the developer implements features X, Y, and Z *immediately*, they will continue not to donate in the future.

I managed to convince almost all of friends and family to use Signal by not being easily available on the more corporate channels. It helps that it's reliable and easy of course.
Not too difficult, it helps to explain that it works well and people *do* care about the encryption and feel uncomfortable with, say, Facebook these days. The enshittification has done a lot of the legwork here. Also if you actually start and organise group chats they get into it fast, because there's a lot going on in a group chat.
Let society devolve in a fascist dictatorship where people randomly disappear. That will make people care for a generation or two.
Short of that, I think a lot of people don't care about privacy.
My sister switched away from Telegram to Signal, because she was getting a lot of spam. And blocking randoms from contacting you is now a 'Telegram Premium' feature.
So I guess... Enshittification helps? But it was not really a privacy centered consideration.
@bart In recent years, I have helped many people switch to Signal. At that time, few had heard of Signal.
Then I did the same with TeleGuard and Briar. I have always given examples of the advantages of the platform. End-to-end encryption, and consequently, you don't have to connect your phone to a paid Alma for communication.
Session is great, but one reason is that the device you use powers your network with tokens. That's why it drains the battery.
@bart Previously, it was extremely difficult to get contacts to switch to Signal, but now it is much easier because people have encountered it online and in the media. I am currently experiencing the same issue with Briar, but the good news is that people are installing it to test it out.

@opensourceopenmind similarly, I got my family and friends to talk to me via #DeltaChat because I simply don't have #WhatsApp, #Telegram etc. in my phone, I never try to convince them talking about encryption or open source, I simply say "I don't use that apps, you can reach me in this one" and then it is about a practical problem and not ideological one, I don't go saying "you should uninstall whatsapp now" but they are more willing to respect/understand your own ideological decisions
#ArcaneChat is just a #DeltaChat client, my main user is... wait for it... ME! so it is basically Delta Chat with some tweaks to my taste, I shared it and it turns out some other people seem to like it, according to the #GooglePlay downloads it is mainly used in #Russia, #Cuba, #USA, #Iran, #Germany and #India
I don't actively try to convince people to use it, and in general it is better to push for DC that is multi-platform, then in #android some might prefer AC as their DC client
I installed WhatsApp for business and set up an auto reply saying that I'd moved to Signal for ethical reasons and providing an install link. Moved the app icon out of sight and let that run on my phone for a couple of months before finally deleting my account. Most of my contacts installed Signal as a result 🌈
the children/teenagers in my family all use signal: it was easy to convince the parents: private, secure, hideable phone number (and avoid unwarranted contacts) and usable without Google/PlayStore.
The latter point being important, as many parents don't want their 11 year old kid to have a full blown phone.
I was surprised to find out, how well that worked: the children have a lot of their friends&contacts on Signal.
Sadly, as they grow older, the adults' Whatsapp network kicks in.
I'm running a public XMPP server, fighting the (unfortunately prevalent) automated spam, and try to make the onboarding experience for beginners as smooth as possible on a federated system.
There's a 3rd strategy which is actually the main reason our family groups switched. Our main chat app was one originally created in a country whose government is accused of #apartheid and #genocide. Whenever that came up in the news, I'd drop a subtle non-pushy comment here and there mentioning that fact, and also that its present executives are located there and support their army's actions.
After one of these major events, to my surprise, someone else, the admin of our family group (non-techy, not #Linux user at that time), arbitrarily decided to delete the family group from the proprietary messenger and told everyone to join the family group on #SignalApp!

firstly I was not on other services, so my family downloaded Signal to have any messaging channel. But they used it only to text/call me and returning to Messenger for chatting with each other. Later I show my mother and aunt groups in Signal and after creating few group chats this somehow pulled my close family members here. If many conversations are here, the rest would follow.

Ich sehe, dass du auf der Webseite Monocles empfiehlst. Davon kann ich auf Grund der Zielgruppe aktuell nur abraten. Monocles basiert auf einer veralteten Version von Conversations und weist einige Sicherheitslücken auf die in Conversations schon vor Monaten behoben wurden.

Firmy s menej ako 1 000 zamestnancami nebudú musieť poskytovať svojim väčším obchodným partnerom informácie nad rámec toho, čo je zahrnuté v štandardoch dobrovoľného podávania správ. Na uľahčenie dodržiavania predpisov Komisia zriadi digitálny portál s prístupom k šablónam a usmerneniam týkajúcim sa požiadaviek na podávanie správ na úrovni EÚ a na vnútroštátnej úrovni.
Menej spoločností bude musieť vykonávať náležitú starostlivosť (due diligence) s cieľom znížiť svoj negatívny vplyv na ľudí a planétu. Podľa revidovaných pravidiel sa to bude vyžadovať iba od veľkých spoločností v EÚ s viac ako 5 000 zamestnancami a čistým ročným obratom viac ako 1,5 miliardy EUR a od spoločností mimo EÚ s rovnakým prahom obratu v EÚ. Budú musieť vykonávať analýzy rozsahu pôsobnosti s cieľom identifikovať riziká vo svojom reťazci činností a mali by žiadať o informácie iba od obchodných partnerov s menej ako 5 000 zamestnancami, ak informácie na hĺbkové posúdenie nemožno získať iným spôsobom.
Plány prechodu, ktoré zabezpečia, že obchodný model spoločnosti bude kompatibilný s prechodom na udržateľné hospodárstvo, už nebudú potrebné. Podniky budú niesť zodpovednosť na národnej úrovni za nesprávne uplatňovanie pravidiel a môžu čeliť pokutám až do výšky 3 % čistého celosvetového obratu firmy. Smernica o náležitej starostlivosti sa bude uplatňovať až od 26. júla 2029 na všetky podniky, na ktoré sa vzťahuje.

@jan tak to závidím, v Beskydech to vypadalo takto. A foukalo taky. Původně hlásili 5 cm za celý den, nakonec to bylo 20 jen do oběda. Byl jsem rád, že nás to chytlo před cestou zpět a ne před cestou tam, protože se zadokolkou bych to už nevyjel.
