My new Accessible Sensor Readout app for Windows

What do you do when apps like 'FanControl' or 'MSI Afterburner' are inaccessible?
Well if you're a really smart person and can program, you create an accessible version for yourself.
If you're not, and you're like me, you spend a lot of time with Codex (in my case) getting one built.
I've tested this on two machines and it worked very well and I'm pleased with how it came out. I have done as much rigorous testing as I can manage here, so I hope it will work for you, should you care to test it yourself.
Some blurb about it and also where to get it:
Sensor Readout is a Windows utility for reading hardware sensors and controlling supported fans with a keyboard-first, screen-reader-friendly interface.
It shows high-level categories on the left, readings grouped by device in a tree view on the right, and common commands in a standard menu bar.
What It Does
Permalink: What It Does
• Reads temperatures, fan RPM, storage health, storage capacity, and selected hardware counters.
• Shows a Performance category for CPU usage, memory usage, and storage read/write activity.
• Uses bundled LibreHardwareMonitor libraries for sensor access.
• Uses the PawnIO driver for low-level motherboard sensors and fan controls where hardware support is available.
• Lets you label fan headers with friendly names.
• Hides stopped or unpopulated motherboard fan headers by default.
• Applies manual fan percentages to one selected fan or to all visible fans.
• Returns one fan or all fans to automatic/default control.
• Saves TXT or HTML sensor reports.
• Supports configurable automatic refresh.
• Uses a per-computer configuration file, such as Desktop.json, Laptop.json, or Family-PC.json, so the same folder can be shared from Dropbox or a USB stick without machines overwriting each other's settings.

I've just put out a new build of Fastwin, my small Windows utility to apply various registry tweaks to make your system run better. This version adds new options for things such as explorer customization, allowing you to get rid of the new right click context menu in Windows 11, turning off Bing in the start menu, etc. and also now allows you to toggle settings between states instead of just setting them in one state. For example, now I can turn back on bing in the start menu, if I ever want to do that for some reason. keeping this one in the useful toolbox - at this point all these tweaks are applied on my system but this will be most useful if getting a new machine and wanting a lot of that off super fast, so I'm genuinely glad you created this.

@Tamasg Exactly this. None of these changes are ones I need now, but they are ones I have no idea how I originally applied or that I would very much not want to do again. It's a beautiful setup companion.
the window just says Select an option: with nothing else that I see with nvda and arrowing down. am I missing something?
@ginsenshi Read up with the review cursor, NVDA+up arrow if in laptop layout, numpad 7 if in desktop.
Oh my gosh I am trying this on a few new machines I am setting up and it is amazing! I'd 100% purchase this if it was able to work with a bunch of settings blind individuals mostly turn off/on with a new machine, camera/mic for some things, animations ETC. I know a lot of that is personal preference though.
@jpellis2008 I wonder how many of the things that scripts like win11 debloater, and removeWindowsAI could be implimented into this. grins.
Question. Is this supposed to fill the same role as Winaero tweaker, but less clunky to use?

@pitermach Does anyone know if CPU or GPU windows version of this should be run on a maxed out framework 13, AMD 370 processor? I would assume CPU still but I am not sure. I have 32GB ram and have dedicated 8GB to the GPU.
Thanks for putting this together. I would like a description of all the models, but I suppose web searching will do me good for the more popular ones. They are not categorized by type according to the manual, so I am trying, on a lark, one of the models for instrumental extraction, and hen using the CPU Windows version, I get:

Is this because I'm using a CPU?
@twynn Hi. That should not hhappen. I'll check on that model. Use the one called instrumental beckruily. that's better anyway

Thank you so much for your efforts. I can't believe how good some of the models have gotten, the one you just mentioned being one of them. I have a computer with an NPU that I may try this one to see how well it performs, though unlike Mac, I don't think Windows has a framework to take advantage of that yet.
Hi there, your Music Separator app seems to want to always download the selected model when starting a separation, even though the model files are in the Models folder in the program directory. Is this deliberate?

I'm on Windows. I have the "BS-Roformer-SW.ckpt" file in the models folder, and after I select the input file and output folder, I press the "Start Separation" button. Here is the error I get in the log.
Error: HTTPSConnectionPool(host='raw.githubusercontent.com', port=443): Max retries exceeded with url: /TRvlvr/application_data/main/filelists/download_checks.json (Caused by NameResolutionError("HTTPSConnection(host='raw.githubusercontent.com', port=443): Failed to resolve 'raw.githubusercontent.com' ([Errno 11001] getaddrinfo failed)"))
In addition, an error dialog is displayed with no error text. NVDA just says "Error dialog. OK button."
Is this supposed to happen when there is no Internet connection? I am sometimes offline when wanting to do a separation. I'm running the CPU version of the program.
@batworx That error appears when DNS doesn't work, which usually means internet is dead. Perhaps it's checking for latest revisions, hashes or something? GitHub can throttle requests but I don't think that error would result if it did.

@spacepup It will just do what it's given. I don't know if they;ve updated it in years but it did a fantastic job when I tested it back in about 2020 or so.

One uses CPU, another uses GPU so simply download the version you need.

Do you know the model behind these? Also lol, who actually makes rar files in 2026!
I only ever see those on p2p sites these days and that's due to old scene convention with multipart archives. But being able to create rar files means you have winrar, cursed software that is, installed. If it's too big for a zip most things handle zip64 extensions to make huge zips, and 7z is, at this point, the best archive format I've heard of. Rar might behave slightly better with lots of wav files though.

Oh this is legitimately cool! It's got a ton of different models in it including the BS Roformer ones that are all the rage now and a ton of other specialized ones. I know how to use demucs but not the rest of those. And it supports model fusion? It's like mvsep!

Oooh good to have those models locally. I've pinged him and asked for date to go at the end of the log entries, would make it much faster to skim through.
@Scott I use Partial Lines addon from Tyler for reading log entries like that. Can't think of a time I've seen date at the end of lines, though yeah, does make for easier reading.

I did find a bug where the state of the separate button doesn't change when the process is complete, it just says 'stop' permanently. Pressing it doesn't seem to do anything either.
@cubic Hi! No bug here. If the extraction is successful, the button gets back to separate. I'll see if I can reproduce it and fix it. What version are you using?

@kfcrosby Yes, inevitably. But it will be negligible if the mass of what I have attached, the contact microphone, is orders of magnitude lower than the gong itself. A couple of grams, compared to 20kg of bronze.

Do you know what is the situation behind Lambda math editor and NVDA? One student reported to me that NVDA don't interpret symbols accurately inside Lambda. I remember that there was addon somewhere but can't find something useful now. @Peter Vágner @NV Access

It works with screen readers to provide speech and braille, it can generate nemeth braille, mathml. For browsing mathml output screen reader support or mathjax in the browser can be used. As input it takes ascii math, latex, and mathml. It looks very robust.

@Bri It's somewhat close to the NVDA version but had to have a few compromises because, web. Still, it's nice to be able to share the madness with jaws/VoiceOver/Talkback and of course, sighted users.
@Bri And to get NVDA's tones, all you have to do is take a sine wave with no envelope, multiply it by 2, and then clamp it between -1 and 1. That's it. That's how tones.beep generates that shape.

For a school project, my son wants to do a live looping performance involving keyboard, vocals and maybe violin. Looping pedals that support vocals and another instrument are surprisingly expensive; several hundred dollars at least. So, I looked into software options and couldn't find anything that quite did what I want.
He wants to be able to quickly toggle overdubbing of loops. He also wants to be able to mute parts of the loop - e.g. mute a set of instruments and bring them back later - which means the looper has to be multi-track.
REAPER's Super8 almost does the trick, but aside from its inaccessibility (my son has sight, so that's okay for him), it doesn't seem to work the way we want with MIDI control. When you assign record and play to MIDI CCs, it works the first time you trigger it, but not after that, which is weird.
GLoop is quite nice, but although it supports undo and redo for overdubs, it doesn't support multiple tracks that you can take out and bring back in at will.
I even looked at Ableton Live's Looper device, but that is only single track.
In the end, I gave up and wrote my own audio-only looper from scratch in #REAPER JSFX. It's very basic. It has a single stereo input and a single stereo output. It doesn't pass through input, so you put it on a track and send other tracks to it that you want included in the loop. It supports 4 stereo internal loop tracks and has separate record and play/stop triggers for each track, plus a reset trigger (9 triggers in total). The triggers are exposed as FX parameters which trigger when the value changes to 1, so you can map them to MIDI buttons or pedals using REAPER's parameter learn function.
I have them mapped to the 8 buttons on my Komplete Kontrol keyboard in MIDI mode. Kontrol MIDI templates allow you to expose multiple pages of buttons, so the reset trigger is mapped to the first button on the second page. If you're doing this with Kontrol, you'll want to change the buttons to gate instead of toggle, as otherwise, the buttons send on for the first press, off for the second press, etc.
I probably won't do much more with this - it serves its purpose - but I thought I'd post it here in case anyone might find it useful.

Do I understand correctly that it won't work at sample rates higher than 48 K? What will happen?
@JustinMac84 It will, just with a smaller buffer. 96k would give you 10 sec for example. It should be possible to increase that limit, but I didn't try since this worked fine for my purposes.

@JustinMac84 You should be able to ctrl+s to save the file. Stick it in your REAPER appdata effects folder; e.g. %appdata%\reaper\effects.
Thanks. While I have you, if you don't mind me asking, I can't get Reaper to see your app to clap plugin. Looks like it could be useful. I created app data\program data\common\clap and put it there, went to clap plugins, added the path as far as common and clicked rescan, but it still didn't see it. Asked on the Reaper whatsapp group twice with no joy. Thanks for any help.
@JustinMac84 1. It should be %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Common\CLAP; i.e. not appdata roaming, but appdata local.

@chikim Some, but that wouldn't allow for keyboard instruments I don't think. Also controlling with a touch screen would be tricky live I think.
Also if you get Ableton Note for mobile $7, I believe it also give you access to Ableton Lite for Desktop.
@chikim I looked into Ableton a bit, but as I noted, its looper device is single track. You might be able to do something in session view, but I think that would require that you pre-arrange the set and have at least some pre-recorded or click to guide the set.
@chikim I thought as much. That doesn't lend itself well to starting with nothing and building up though. No pre-recorded clips here.

The program automatically downloads the current server list from the FM-DX API and organizes it by country. You can easily explore available receivers, see how many servers are available in each country, and open any receiver directly in your web browser.
You can also use a search button to find a receiver which you are interested in.
On the servers.fmdx.org website, a list of servers is available, but by default, it's not organized. @ednun_p I don't know what the state of things is these days as far as accessibility. Heard it got worse. I used to use Dereverb in iZotope RX, various versions. I think it would probably just turn that sound into a weird kind of flat splat though.

For those using ReFX Nexus: Some presets which consist of drum loops (mostly hollywood percussion loops) don't play all loops. e. g. every single note should trigger one associated loop but there is just one single loop triggered by every note. ReFX staff reproduced it and it should be fixed soon. It is probably broken in last latest version, I can reproduce it after last update.

While talking to @nick on the domain, I had an idea for a game that I do not have the knowledge to program. The scenario is that you are a wanna-be musician/fan of a band, but you want to show them how well you can play, so at level one, for example, you'd start off with your casio vl tone 1, and the pianist in the band is trying to chase you down, and kill you by dropping a piano on your head. it would get more complicated, but that's the basic idea.

To clarify, would the player be playing along to existing songs like in Guitar Hero or other rhythm games? Or just playing solo pieces with increasing difficulty?
@matt not a bit; I was just trying to see if I could get a front end to build the script. Inserting a sound pool in nvgt, for example, could be much quicker if the gui let you add files and establish what they were for, then write the actual code. The jaws script manager, and autohotkey work this way if you want them too.
@matt Here is the idea, a few obvious plot holes, like not accounting for having people surrounding you on both sides, but it gets the point across.
@matt I'm not really familiar with other toolkits, but it seems pretty doable with the web audio API. I'm not quite clear on what the game controls would be like though. Like... presumably, if someone is walking towards you on your left, you'd want to run any other direction but that. But if you ran forward, it's kinda hard to get things to sound like they're coming from behind you. HRTF is possible, but IMO it's still kinda hard to get a real sense of distance with it without other indicators.
@matt Another health loss thing could be that you can't run for a short period of time or can't run as fast, which means you have to be more strategic about getting away? Or something.

Broadly fair usage. Got someone else's computer system to behave in a way they didn't want it to. The only stretch is that there's an implication in "hacked" that some safeguards had to be bypassed, and there weren't any in the first place. But that's worse, right?

they aren't trustworthy. Take up a lot of time trying to get a reasoned answer and there's always a phrase or wording out of place that needs correction. Almost as it the AI is trying to engage longer and longer than necessary.

to be honest i am not well-informed enough to definitively judge the accuracy of this, but it seems wrong for 2 main reasons.
1. models dont train on the fly, typically, yet, so for models to behave as such in such a short period of time seems inaccurate and would require web search enabled and explicitly directed to disregard other search results.
2. people training these models know conflicting info is everywhere and the source of truth is prioritized in training algorithms.
How is this a news story, beyond "ai bad"? In the dial up days people falsely believed everyone ate 9 spiders a year in their sleep due to chain emails.
Shall we have an algorithmic bullshit generator?
And pass around multiple copies of it, identical and with small changes, omissions and additions?

in less than 24 hours the chatbots fell for the experiment, and less than 24 hours after it was revealed what the experiment was about, that information has ALSO become part of the training data
are they constantly scrapping websites for training data or why does this appear here so fast??? no wonder those datacenters consume so much electricity if they dont take a single break from scrapping the internet

I can tell it's AI. There's something about the aliasing in the high strings, and also it floats around the stereo spectrum a bit. That would never happen in a real Orchestral arrangement unless it was for artistic reasons.
Doesn't mean it isn't pretty good, but I hear AI anyway.

@KaraLG84 @technocounselor One feature I would pay serious money to see in NVDA is an equivilant of the speech and sounds manager in jaws. I love having small inperceptable sounds for things like heading level or if something is a link or a button. I know there is an addin for it, but would love to see it in NVDA core.
@ysotomayor @technocounselor There is an add-on which can do this called Earcons and Speech rules but it can be finicky and break things. I only have it enabled when I want to use it. I'd love to see something like this built into NVDA itself.

I'm not sure. I went looking for something like that a while ago but couldn't find anything.
I switched a few years ago and had similar struggles. For some things I still use Jaws simply because there are areas where it works better. particularly complex excel but happy I made the switch.
@kaveinthran @bmoore123 Let's just say someone friendly—points to himself—is working on better Excel support for NVDA. Feature compatibility is the first thing on the agenda once the project really gets going. Right now, I'm focused on better terminal support.
@bmoore123 I'm glad this was a pleasant experience for you. I found many of the same issues, but Ihave no interest in doing all the workarounds you had to do. I like my screenreader that I made a few settings to years ago with proper clear documentation I'm glad NVDA is around, but every time I've tried it, I've had to sotp within five minutes. It's far too verbose, although it sounds like you keep alot of your echo on anyway. I also find JAWS Braille support more robust, but I am glad NVDA is around for people who prefer its methods of operation.
NVDA+k will read the URL of links. Press it twice to put it in the virtual viewer.

@KaraLG84 not quite the same feature; nvda+K reads the destination of a focused link. I guess if you're not on a link having the link of the active document would be a useful fallback, avoiding the need for 2 gestures.
@KaraLG84 NVDA+L seems to be our version of JAWS+A - I think it’s part of the BrowserNav addon unfortunately Also I thought +l read line on laptop layout, so perhaps not for everyone! .

I had never given any thought to a different speech rate for typing echo. JAWS used to give me a headache with its keyboard voice, message voice and so on.

Re address bar issue, you can either press F6 (Windows shortcut) move between that and the webpage, use the obj Watcher add-on and query the address bar whenever you want, or something else I haven't thought of.
Re element inspection, I think all major browsers have this ability accessible to screen reader users. Otherwise, see if you can contact the developer of BrowserNav to see if it can be added as a feature.
@DavidGoldfield Check out Check Input Gestures for your gesture conflicts. Perhaps something that should end up in core. Funny to read options that others change right away that are total opposite of what I use, I have Say All off, some punctuation other than VS code, etc. Some good points about some things that could be useful. I like Find where it is, gives me the option to use the Browser find command which JAWS overrides.
@Jage I'll say that I find the touch cursor in JAWS comparable to NVDA's object navigation. This was a great and detailed review. Thanks for taking the time to not only post it but in compiling all of your experiences.

@Jage @DavidGoldfield How do you use the browser find with a screen reader? I've always been glad JAWS overwrites the keystroke.
@DeanEquity @Jage You can either redefine the Jaws find hotkey to something else or you can press the insert key with the number three on the numbers row, which tells Jaws to bypass the next key.
@DeanEquity @Jage @DavidGoldfield Same here, Dean. I've never found a use for browser in-page find, but I would love to be proven wrong especially if I'm missing something benefitial. After pressing control+f typing something and pressing enter, nothing happens as far as I can tell. Obviously something visual must happen or this process wouldn't exist. The question is: what is it and how does it help blind people?

@clv1 The number of times I can't find a way in jaws to do what I can with object nav is incredible. I tend to find, if NVDA can't, only narrator often can
@clv1 Absolutely, I do agree with a couple of points in the article. The silent focus change can be an issue, the addressbar one could be fixed with an addon but would be a nice feature
@alexhall Re element inspection, NVDA+F1 is probably what you want. It shows UIA/MSAA/IA2 attributes as well as some NVDA abstracted concepts. For instance, all accessibility APIs are wrapped in NVDAObjects internally. TextInfos are an abstraction over UIA text range, etc.
This is a great article! A couple thoughts:
- reading control+c etc, try the clipspeak add-on
- Gemini, again there are several add-ons which likely help here.
- Report URL without moving, alt+d then escape brings you back, but we would consider an issue for this.
- Typing echo profile - again please write up an issue for this.
- NVDA going silent - if you can give steps which reliably reproduce this, please let us know (or write up an issue).

Reading PDF files, (NVDA reads as-is including errors, vs Jaws tries to smooth things as it goes). This is something which an argument could be made either way for (many people like having it highlight issues as it does now). It might be something which would be good for an add-on? Possibly could also do the same for malformed web code?
Reporting current object, NVDA+f1 brings up NVDAs log viewer with information about the current object presented. Not sure if that's the information you need, otherwise from the conversation here the other day, the browser developer tools (or the add-ons Amir is working on - great stuff Amir!)
@NVAccess Yes. I'd be fine with fixing the errors and having the ability to switch in to an accessibility tester's mode where they're left unfixed. We want to keep in mind that, at the end of the day, blind people need to learn, live and get work done. If we can do anything to make any of that easier then we should, even if that means smoothing out the accessibility issues we encounter before they reach the user.
We have heard the argument both ways - obviously having the exact source reported is useful for testing, but some end users prefer it each way. Not arguing either way, just noting that it's not ONLY testers who prefer one and end users who prefer the other approach. I didn't look if there was an issue for that, but it would be worth creating one, on GitHub if there isn't github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue…

I want this to be the gold-standard of apps in it's class for blind people, and something that, even if it was AI-coded, people know there's ethics and thought behind it, with attribution given at every step.

I can't get it to actually set it to 100 though, it just seems to ignore it but at least it sets something.
You don't even have to test with fan curves, just do CTRL+L and pick your fan, then set fans to 100, then back to auto. If it works for you, then it might just be a quirk of my weird laptop.

- Improved: Performance/Overview now uses clearer group names for CPU and memory readings and printer summary rows, avoiding duplicate-looking System and Printers branches in the tree.
- Improved: CPU and baseboard Details now include deeper Windows/SMBIOS fields such as cache associativity and write policy, chassis type, memory slot counts, expansion slots, and raw Windows fields where available.
- Improved: Windows and firmware Details now include additional OS, registry, licensing, system product, BIOS, Secure Boot, and TPM fields where Windows exposes them. Product keys are shown only as masked endings so shared reports do not leak full keys.
- Improved: Disk Details now include physical disk, partition, hidden/no-letter partition, and logical volume information where Windows exposes it.
- Improved: Network Details now include gateway, DNS, DHCP, IP, MTU, adapter statistics, and raw Windows adapter/configuration fields where available.
- Improved: Details now open as a grouped tree instead of a two-column list, so screen readers read each field and value as one item, raw WMI or registry fields can be skipped by group, and F3/F4 work inside Details for search and text review.
- Added: `Ctrl+Shift+C` copies the selected reading value only, without the reading name, making model numbers, device strings, UUIDs, and similar fields easier to reuse.
- Improved: Screen-reader users now hear "Has Details" after tree items that support the Details command, without adding that hint to copied text or reports.
