Let's see if I have another dream that I am in my fourties, but for some reason just graduating high school (specifically high school, not GED) and posting to my Mastodon from English class with an iPhone again. This seems to have replaced fire alarm dreams. Haven't had one of those in a couple of weeks.
Just thinking about it made the fire alarm dreams come back, but this time, I was living in New York but still going to high school in North Carolina, and there were some legistical issues after the school caught fire. I couldn't convince the bus driver to drive from Greensboro to NYC, because, at the fastest possible speed the bus could travel, with it's governor, including traffic, it would take about a day each way.
OK, I've been promising this ISO all day now while doing Vibe coding for work projects in the background. It's official. In about 1.5 hours, everyone will have the file at once, through a paid service I'm keeping a week just to do this with. I wasn't charged for them yet, it's kinda pricey per month if you want more than 5 gigs so really that one week will be it, I'm canceling that sub. Even though their site is fairly accessible to use.
well, T-mobile's upload speeds here are not much better, in fact, only 200-300 KBPS on 5G? really, T-mo? wow. Not great at all. That XFINITY connection is better as slow as it is, wow.

I just learned some rather unsettling news that makes me need to go on a small rant. This is for my followers who maintain and are interested in VPS Systems, particularly those from Akamai/Linode, but it brings up a wider issue regarding screen readers that affects other providers offering remote web console access to servers. One of the coolest features that Akamai/Linode has offered over the years, was being able to access your server, even if for example you miss configure a firewall, and lock yourself out of normal network access. This was done through a tool that Akamai called Lish, and basically it allowed you to access the back end of your server even if networking was misconfigured or disabled entirely, through an SSH gateway. As a totally blind server administrator, this kind of access is invaluable, and isn't offered at any other provider. Well this beautiful SSH gateway according to the latest newsletter I got from Akamai, will be deprecated in the second quarter of 2026! Oh you will still have console access to your server if needed, but only via the web! And that means almost certainly inaccessible! I personally have tried to use the digital ocean web console, and absolutely could not do it independently with a screen reader! We need to figure out why a screen reader is incapable of accessing these web consoles, and make them accessible, because most VPS and even dedicated server providers that offer console access to your server, will do it via a web interface that in most cases is completely hidden from screen readers! How do we fix this! I don't like this change, even though they say it is to, modernize the platform! Excuse me? It was working, literally for years! Why does it absolutely have to change now now now! Anyway my rant is done, I just thought I would give my fellow server owners the warning about this change, just wow

Unless they've changed something lately, the web console is absolutely accessible. Probably the best example of accessibility of that kind I've ever come across. It's the only way I've accessed lish for a while.

The web terminal thingy on Cockpit works pretty much the same way. I discovered that last year when I installed ASL3 on a Raspberry Pi. Their Pi appliance package comes with Cockpit, which has a web UI for basic tasks, and a terminal. I prefer using regular ol' OpenSSH, but it works if I need it.

I may have asked this before, but I'd love to know if anyone out there is still using the Bookface Userstyles in a userContent.css stylesheet or with the "Stylus" or "Userscripts" browser extensions?
Because if nobody is really using Bookface Userstyles anymore I'd like to stop updating them. They have some significant differences from the Bookface scheme files and so require a lot of extra manual editing and testing to make sure they work at overriding the Frio theme. They may be how Bookface got started but I'm not using them myself anymore and wondered if anyone else is still relying on them?
Because now I've had to work on yet another branch for the Friendica development Release Candidate, which will at some point become the new "stable" version. But no doubt some server admins will continue running the current stable release well after the next version is released. So maintaining and updating Bookface is already a bit of work, considering it's a side-project that I can only get to when I have time. If people are cool with my dropping the Userstyles that would help.
Of course the existing Userstyles will continue to work with the current stable version of Friendica (2024.12). They haven't been updated to work with the Release Candidate and won't be if I'm retiring them. They'll still be available in my GitLab Repo though, I'm not going to delete them.
I know I said I'd like to stop updating the Bookface Userstyles but I went ahead and did it anyway. In part because I've needed to start using them again myself over at Friendica.World, which switched to the Release Candidate and the Bookface schemes get overwritten every time the server is updated or something.
Anyway, I started by adding all the Bookface 1.8.5 server-side changes to the Userstyles for Friendica Stable:

Windows 10 will live on. I dare not upload it to the archive because I don't know how to make it not tied to my name, but everywhere it's going to get uploaded to, it'll be annonomous. Must keep it so, and potentially with file expirations, although I'm still looking for a solution that doesn't have that for free accounts and can upload max 5 GB file size. Again, I repeat: the ISO does not use an activated product key. It installs the generic KMS Windows 10 IoT LTSC key. That's by design, and you'll be asked to activate it just as you would be with any other copy of Windows. Beyond that is up to you. It's not an illegal copy of Windows, what's less legal is redistributing an ISO itself.

Which leaves me feeling like this isn't as amazing as they want you to believe. They did a lot of work because they can't trust the new crypto to fully replace the classical.
Periodic reminder: It is not because a method is marked as deprecated that it suddenly stop working. No it just mean that the method is marked for removal in a future release. Your code is not broken. It is guaranteed to work until that future release. You have the time to plan the migration to the new method or workflow. I have a Synology DS220J model. Its ethernet port is only 1gb, but it has 2 USB A ports that support 5gb. Maybe I should get an ethernet adaptor for it. :)
Also, it's totally not legal to upload it. Which is quite unfortunate. That's why I'm doing the 100 download / 24 hour limit for this one. Darn. I thought you could, but nope, it's considered redistribution, which is like, a big no-no. Of course no idea how that applies after it's out-of-support, but will I take that risk? Probably not, at least for now I won't host a full Win10 ISO just yet on my own personal site that's super traceable back to me. I expect this upload to take hours. probably 2 or 3? @jscholes I wonder what other file sharing services let you do this, it's really neat - if I were to say, upload over FTP to my webserver, the file size people would get returned would only reflect the actual uploaded size, so the download would finish like, mid-upload and halfway. That's why this puzzled me, otherwise the only other way I've seen is to tell your webserver to never report file sizes for downloads, that way your browser just streams the file without knowing an ending size.
Sounds neat. Unfortunately it's sitting at 0% here, has been for like half an hour. The page prompts me that a download is in progress if I close it though, so who knows, maybe it keeps people queued for when you've finished uploading instead?
@Scott Same here, 0% for the last hour. Either the progress bar doesn't work, or it isn't actually downloading anything until you're upload is completely done.

@jpellis2008 so I guess yes? There's no extended security updates program for Windows 10 Enterprise IoT LTSC, because it's technically meant to get them until 2032 automatically, without any enrollments. At least, the ESU program is only shown on consumer (like home/pro) SKUs of Windows 10.

Help steph, a trans woman, & her girlfriend move to a safer, trans-inclusive, protective state - away from where they are currently (Ripon). Safety for trans people there has become increasingly questionable and uncertain and they would need as much help as possible from us as they find temporary jobs and plan the move. I'm going to publish this ISO I think. It's clean, no driver integrations, just 3 updates that get it to build 19041.6456. That's the last security patch for Windows 10 before extended security updates come out. Most likely a similar LTSC ISO will make it to archive.org, too. Big difference is that I include a downgrade.bat for you: If you're on Windows 11, it will install Windows 10 on it like nothing has happened (thanks Up-down project for the idea on how this works, without them I couldn't have done it.) So, yes. This ISO will be special because if you want to "downgrade" or even "upgrade" your Win10 and Win11 install, you can with it, and it will fix any corrupted system files that way too anyway. I'm doing this as my last homage to Windows 10. It needs to be laid to rest with honor, if it does. Oh, if anyone's willing to mirror the file, that would be quite appreciated, as my bandwidth is limited. I might choose a file uploading service, but I wanted folks to have direct links without me paying for a plan on one where file traffic limits can be an issue. Ultimately, anyone is also encouraged to re-upload it on archive.org (I just have no time to) if they wish.
@alexchapman @Aryan huh that's odd! but sadly it doesn't tell you exactly who's downloading from where if it's P2P, at least File Pizza does so you know and can track that peer distribution. It could be that one person started it, that tanked my upload speeds so bad maxing it out that nobody else could grab from that point onwards.

Afterwards I may upload to somewhere else unless enough folks can grab that GoogleDrive link to upload elsewhere and it gets "seeded" to a few places. Then I'll worry less. Until then, I don't mind putting it in 2 or 3 places to start, then we'll see where it ends up by tomorrow this time :D

Gosh I still have one but it's been years since I really touched it with how crap accessibility was on those drop-down badges you had to turn off annoyingly, and then the tray icon broke, then they fixe it, ugh ugh. I got so tired of Dropbox. I think they have a bit higher download limits than G-drive before it's completely locked from others, but it's still a few hundred at the very least.

QUick question for those in the nkow: What are the differences between the Envision GLasses and the Ally Solos Glasses? I know that Ally is an ENvision product so that's why I'm asking.
The Envision glasses were based on Google Glass, and as such run Android under the hood. They have a lot of features that you have in the envision app which you can access either with voice commands or using touch gestures. While many of their features like the Allyassistant or scene descriptions need internet access, some functions like instant text OCR don't need a connection to the internet or your phone and can run on the glasses themselves.
In contrast the Ally Solos glasses are a much simpler device, a rebranded and slightly tweaked version of the Solos Air Go glasses. They are very similar to the meta raybans if you know how those work in that the glasses mostly act as a bluetooth bone conduction headset for your phone, and they have a camera that can be accessed by Ally. And Ally is the only way you can do anything Ai based on them. So, that means the only means to do anything is through voice commands, and every action has to go through the Ally app on your phone which in turn needs an internet connection. There were many interviews the people at Envision did which go into way more detail, I can recommend the one for the NFB's Access On podcast for example.
@pitermach Ah ok. So the Envision ones are probably still better? I have the Ray-Bans already and I'm looking for something better. I've preordered the EchoVisions but I am concerned about reading text with them.
In some ways they are yeah, but Google glass as a product was discontinued which is why Envision was looking for an alternative. Can't comment on the EchoVision glasses because I'm not very familiar with them.
Oh yeah, they’re definitely the more future proof product. What I would say is whether you’d like them is a case of whether you like the ally assistant itself, since the glasses are just an extension of it..
