@radasbona GNU Taler ist keine Währung sondern ein Bezahlsystem. Open Source PayPal zum selber hosten vereinfacht gesagt. Der Eventveranstalter wäre hier also "Bank" und payment provider. 🧵 My sense of justice was triggered by #Palantir corporate gaslighting two Swiss investigative journalists on LinkedIn.
This is something most people won’t even see, but I was angry, so I looked while my kid was still asleep.
Here’s what it looks like when tech bros attack journalists while you and I have too much food over Christmas.
Two Swiss journalists spent a year filing 59 #FOIA requests to document Palantir’s 7-year campaign to sell surveillance software to Swiss authorities (army and health services in particular).
Palantir built a straw man saying they never officially participated in any RFP or formal government procurement process. And that either way, it’s not a big deal that they sometimes demo the software. So what?
What the journalists actually wrote: that Palantir engaged in 7 (seven!) years of informal contact attempts, sales conversations, and exchange meetings with Swiss officials.
Journalist Adrienne Fichter called them out in the comments: “I am still waiting for the list of wrong claims and facts in our 2 articles. We never wrote any of [what you claim].” (My edit for brevity)
The Palantir rep’s LinkedIn comment got 20 likes from his tech bro allies.
One even called the journalists part of the “bipolar ludditic left.” Casually weaponizing mental health stigma while completely misunderstanding what Luddites actually fought against (*cough* exploitation).
Meanwhile, these journalists who spent a year doing actual investigative work, who filed dozens of FOIA requests, who read through military reports and health service evaluations barely had anyone come to their defense in that same space.
They are now fending for themselves as they should, but the asymmetry is jarring.

That’s their game when they don’t have arguments that would hold in court:

Make strawman arguments about claims that were never made.
Create the appearance of legitimacy through social proof (those 20 likes).
And do it all in spaces where the general public will never see it.
Palantir wants people to believe that seven years of talks were just demos or something.
Seven years is longer than some marriages!
The Swiss army doesn’t casually commission a 20-page internal risk assessment because someone had a coffee chat with a Palantir sales rep who opened a laptop for a demo.
Swiss health authorities don’t just write detailed evaluations with redacted conclusions because of “casual chats.”
When their systematic attempts to insert themselves into Swiss infrastructure didn’t work (the Swiss, smart people, said no 9 —nine! —times) Palantir just kept going unabated.
These researchers aren’t wealthy. They stake their professional reputations on this work. If they get it wrong, their careers suffer real consequences.
The Palantir rep has dozen other tech companies that would hire him tomorrow. If this job doesn’t work out, there’s always the next one. The stakes are fundamentally different.
Adrienne Fichter and Marguerite Meyer did rigorous investigative journalism. They documented their sources. They filed FOIA requests. They read government reports. They interviewed officials. That’s what it looks like to speak truth to power.

I might be working up a rant about the elegant symmetry of De Morgan's laws, and how unfortunately it's wrong.
There are four laws:
1. ¬A ∧ ¬B → ¬(A ∨ B) 2. ¬(A ∨ B) → ¬A ∧ ¬B
3. ¬A ∨ ¬B → ¬(A ∧ B) 4. ¬(A ∧ B) → ¬A ∨ ¬B
Intuitionistic logic accepts 1–3, but not 4. #4 claims that if there's no proof of A and B simultaneously, it must be for one of two reasons: there are no proofs of A at all, or there are no proofs of B at all.
But that's obviously not true except in extremely limited situations. It's like saying that if a restaurant never serves meat and fish on the same day, it's because it never serves meat or because it never serves fish.

#SelfHosting week 0, phase 1B: DNS records settings. Performed @_elena 's instructions on her "self hosting for newbies" part 2. Except for the post-install as I run it through terminal and not through web UI. For an ms-dos-born it's easier to perform a simple command such as "yunohost tools postinstall" rather than go to web, then type, then search for the various UI elements. Everything went smooth, except for letsencrypt at first. But in the end it seems to have worked. It got stuck because hostinger panel didn't get one suggested parameter, the numeric 3600, every record has a parameter which is 3, 4 or 5 numbers. Created the domain and subdomain to point it to yunohost admin interface, and then obstacle came. Opening browser to subdomain, just returns "connection timed out". Checked for nginx parameters through yunohost terminal, using the desired Sudo commands. Then, "sudo yunohost diagnosis run" "sudo yunohost diagnosis show --issues --human-readable" and I got explanation on reverse dns which was wrong. After that, I searched on the web (and on AI, I admit) the position on hostinger panel to set them, and I found "set tpr record" placed the desired domain name. And now it's time to wait for propagation. But what about the "connected timeout", in the article posted in blog.elenarossini.com no such obstacle was mentioned. I'm back to my 20s when I spent the night (it's almost 4 in the morning), learning commands. Last but not least, accessibility issue: I'm using an app called WebSSH pro, downloaded on app store. Set it up, and VoiceOver for iOS does not read the keys I press on keyboard so I'm very slow to type commands there. Pc is better. In a few hours I'll try hostinger's terminal. In Czechia we had a communist regime in years 1948-1989. The communist party made nearly the same evil as nazis did. For example: Just because of different political opinions they executed 248 people, imprisoned 205 000 people (8 000 died there), sent 20 000 people to work camps, and forced 22 000 people to work in technical auxiliary battalions. Another 450 people trying to escape from the country was killed by our own border patrol. This communist party used their power to completely forbid other parties, to suppress religion, to control TV, radio newspapers. They controlled who can or cannot study, publish books, or even sing based on people's political views...
The party who did all this is still operating here, proudly carrying the legacy of all this, honoring all the symbols, adoring soviet mass killers. That's the KSČM party who is now complaining about the new law, trying to shift the narrarative to "criticising the elites".
I wouldn't be so harsh on him. I know that communist ideology is becoming popular in Spain and I don't blame them in any way. The original idea is very tempting. But also very utopist. It's also true that what we see as communism is very different to what is actually promoted in Spain now. But I felt the need to narrow the false narrative in the post. It's forbidding a suppressing ideology, which "communism" in our meaning definately is.
I think #XMPP has a relatively clear and achievable path to drastically reduce the amount of metadata, but I’m increasingly worried that it is not going to move the needle in terms of adoption.
For 99.99% of people, the only relevant feature for an instant messenger is simply 'Are my friends using it?' The other 0.01% are equally divided between people who already use XMPP and don’t mind the metadata, and people who won’t use it anyway.

• Go roster-less. I seriously considered that for Quicksy. You basically just do it.
• Per device offline queue. With SASL2 the server knows what devices a users has. Discard messages once you know every device has received them.
• Sealed sender. With SASL anonymous and PEP we have some good building blocks for that. Basically just have to come up with semantics of which key pairs go where.
Won't this just move rosters into PEP subscriptions while kicking out the legs of our current anti-spam efforts and breaking all our nice access controls?

@zash I don't think we'd use PEP subscriptions, but rather encrypted, client-initiated notifications. So whenever I change my encrypted avatar PEP node, I would also send a notification to all the people in my encrypted roster replacement PEP node so they can fetch the updated avatar.

@larma @zash And once there is enough passive, encrypted communication (for example receipts and displayed markers) a sender also has more ways to passively learn about new devices of the recipient. OMEMO 0.4+ basically includes a device list which one can then verify through a pull from PEP. Traffic wise that might even be more efficient than a generic +notify.
@zash In fact, we'd probably want to use something like trust messages to have the new client be trusted by an existing client. And the existing client would then notify all contacts about both, the new client existing and the old client trusting it. If we encrypt the roster/avatar/vCard, we need some means for the new client to retrieve the encryption key from the old client anyway - at least in the regular case where you still have such a client.
As someone who tries to get others to use safe chat (vs gmail, FB, etc.), I understand your 99.9% comment. But, I ask people to install Signal or DeltaChat, because XMPP in practice lacks guaranteed e2e encryption (OMEMO fine, but it's not forced on), and I find including photos baffling and/or not secure (alternate upload server, not in-band). These are my two pain points, and that's for someone who has been using XMPP and running a server for 25(?) years.

@stepan with that reasoning, you should also forbid all capitalist propaganda, for all the people who died or were/are imprisoned under several capitalist dictatorships around the world.
