1.300 Haushalte ☀️

Anyone know of a tool like Multipass (github.com/canonical/multipass) but for Fedora (and, ideally, Fedora CoreOS). So you can, for example, easily play with instance configuration, etc., locally?

I know I can use libvirt (and I did set it up after quite a struggle) but it’s a huge hassle in comparison.

It’s amazing to me just how far ahead of every other VPS provider Hetzner is in terms of server provisioning times. ~2× faster than their nearest competitor. They’re wiping the floor with the rest. For an industry obsessed with performance, this must be very embarrassing for their competitors.

vpsbenchmarks.com/labs/provisi…

PS. This is something I’ve verified first-hand in my own use of Hetzner and some of their competitors.

I did notice another thing or two about them Hetzner. I joined and it's definitely OpenStack, which I like, but they have their own "API" which is pretty much OpenStack's API. This doesn't sit right with me, as if they're pretending they built from scratch.

Also, if you look at their Wikipedia page, they have apparently shut down a few independent news sites, most recently a Ukrainian one at the behest of Russia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hetzner

This is a topic that comes up more frequently than it should have to. "Just quit" is usually the right advice, but it's advice which is incredibly hard to hear. Walking away from a paying gig means less financial security and in capitalism that's terrifying.

That said, if I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be "Just quit, it'll be okay." (Not that I ever directly bombed anyone.)

Still seeing a lot of people posting from accounts on mastodon.technology.

Your server is about to shut down, please move your accounts to another server as soon as possible.

You can transfer your account to another server, but only while both servers are still operational, so the time to do the transfer is now.

The migration process lets you keep your followers and follows. There's more info on how to do it here:

What theme are you using in #deltachat_desktop?

Did you know that themes are actually just css files?
And that you can make your own themes?: github.com/deltachat/deltachat…

We’re working hard on the upcoming 1.34 desktop release.
The bulk of the work was moving all talking with core to #jsonrpc api, which speeds up development and #deltachat_desktop itself.

The move to jsonrpc is also one big step in liberating us from electron, as we plan to switch to tauri.app in the far future.

Stay tuned for the new test releases in the 1.33.X release row.
(even versions are releases, odd versions are test releases)

Option are there, choose what topics you like - mostly human orientated with the technical things in mind, as it seems life is mostly a human problem or equation on top of everything else! And understandably not many want to work on that!

in reply to Aral Balkan

That's kind of hilarious, though I guess I am more of a "code golf" (more formally: Kolmogorov complexity reduction) sort of minimalist who relishes in reducing LoC and dependencies, and so if not using ads with heinous surveillance capitalism underpinnings, why even bother to go through the trouble to mimic them in a more benign manner?

Maybe useful for Hollywood VFX teams doing historical reenactments in the distant future I guess?

What is your favourite system for carrying out translations? Weblate? Locize? Other…? (And why?)

Which would be most suitable for a free and open source project would you think?

(And is there any library and/or service that you’ve found especially useful for JavaScript projects – both on the server and client sides – i18next, etc?)

Thanks!

(I’m looking into implementing internationalisation and localisation for Kitten projects – codeberg.org/kitten/app)

#i18n #l10n #fediBrain #web #dev #js

in reply to Aral Balkan

Some interesting tidbits from my initial research:

There are the popular i18n frameworks (i18next, etc.) and then some really small ones like Lisan, Rosettta, etc.

And some tie in with localisation services (e.g., i18next and Locize) to enable continuous translations.

Not sure what level of support to add for what in Kitten yet but going to have a play with a number of them to see how they feel…

in reply to Aral Balkan

… My gut feeling is that a lightweight framework like Lisan or Rosetta combinated with the ECMAScript Internationalisation API might feel right for Kitten.

(Or perhaps it’s best not to build in support and leave that as a project-level decision folks can make if they want to. I’ll start implementing internationalisation/localisation in Domain and see how it goes and which bits, if any, feel like they should be in the platform instead of the app. That’s basically been my approach so far.)

in reply to Aral Balkan

Fluent is the only system I know of that enables translators to properly handle plurals and genders.

I'm planning to eventually migrate Liberapay to it (or something like it). github.com/liberapay/liberapay…

@fabrice

Do you write tech tutorials? As educators you have a moral obligation not to perpetuate the harmful norms of the mainstream.

Take this (otherwise excellent) tutorial on JavaScript internationalisation – phrase.com/blog/posts/step-ste… – one of the examples has you building an NFT price tracking application.

Don’t do this.

Don’t help normalise/legitimise Ponzi and pump-and-dump schemes. The same goes for privacy-invading practices, no matter how popular they may be (because the mainstream is a sewer).

Leider auch mein Empfinden.
Für mich lohnt sich das 49 € Ticket nicht und damit kaufe ich es auch nicht.
Bei 29 würde ich Überlegen, aber beim 9€ einfach ein "must have"

"|nitter

nitter.snopyta.org/lgbeutin/st…

in reply to ⛳ rebel

Absicht? 🤔

Wow… this is a mass-scale health data grab (DNA, etc.) by industry if ever there was one.

Also looks like the Silicon Valley/Stanford/startup folks have finally well and truly got their nails into the NHS after constant lobbying and facilitated by folks (useful idiots or accomplices?) like NESTA.
