Did you know IBM helped Hitler carry out the Holocaust? Is it in any way surprising that we can’t do anything about Big Tech and toxic oligarchs like Elon Musk when even those who helped carry out one of the worst tragedies in human history remain unpunished? Should it come as a shock that the very same bastards are funding and pining for fascism today?

The W3C publishing ethical web principles is like OPEC publishing ethical climate principles.
Who are the members of the W3C?
Google,
Facebook (Meta),
Amazon,
Adobe,
SoftBank,
Yahoo!,
…
The W3C is the standards body of surveillance capitalism.
Ethical principles? W3C? Don’t make me laugh!
If they had any ethics they’d have expelled their most prominent members starting with Google and Facebook.

W3C TAG Ethical Web Principles
The web should be a platform that helps people and provides a positive social benefit. As we continue to evolve the web platform, we must therefore consider the consequences of our work.www.w3.org
Dear conference organisers,
If you don’t want to limit your speakers to those who are fine with surveillance capitalism, please don’t make your call for proposals require an account with a surveillance capitalist.

If you use the Firefox browser – or a privacy-respecting Firefox fork, like LibreWolf (librewolf.net/) – take a look at the LibRedirect extension (libredirect.github.io/). It automatically redirects links/embeds of surveillance capitalists like Google (YouTube, etc.), Instragram, Twitter, Reddit, etc. to community-run instances that remove tracking, etc.

What an interesting reading, thanks for your work.
I agree with your statement on this. The issue is a bit harder to address than classic #peopleFarming. How can an artist choose to opt-out from this? @aral
Wow… this is a mass-scale health data grab (DNA, etc.) by industry if ever there was one.
Just look at how it’s funded and the people running it: ourfuturehealth.org.uk/about-u…
Also looks like the Silicon Valley/Stanford/startup folks have finally well and truly got their nails into the NHS after constant lobbying and facilitated by folks (useful idiots or accomplices?) like NESTA.

“Palantir Technologies had a secret plan to deepen its relationship with the UK’s National Health Service without public scrutiny.
The US data-analytics company aimed to buy up smaller rivals that already had an existing relationship with the NHS, according to emails and strategy documents seen by Bloomberg. This approach would hopefully allow Palantir to avoid further scrutiny in working with one of the largest depositories of heath data. ”

“TikTok poses an unacceptable national security risk due to its extensive data harvesting being combined with Beijing’s apparently unchecked access to that sensitive data.” – Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
This is true.
Now replace TikTok with Facebook, Snapchat, <insert Silicon Valley Big Tech corporation or startup here> and Beijing with Washington, DC and…
This is also true.

IAB Europe’s consent popups are unlawful

GDPR enforcer rules that IAB Europe’s consent popups are unlawful
EU data protection authorities find that the consent popups that plagued Europeans for years are illegal. All data collected through them must be deleted. This decision impacts Google’s, Amazon’s and Microsoft’s online advertising businesses.Johnny Ryan (Irish Council for Civil Liberties)

Spoke to a guy once who was (is?) CEO of some startup that displayed words on top of each other. Was apparently easier for people with dyslexia to read (not sure this was ever peer reviewed).
So I ask him: “What’s your business model?”
He looks at me like I’m daft. “We know what you’re reading.”
And I hope democracies can regulate to put an end to this system before it puts an end to democracies. Because, as with most things, it’s a systemic problem not one of personal responsibility. The people being addicted to these systems are the victims.
