Security Bugfix Announcement: Distribution maintainers please update your packages!

Today Simon McVittie released updates fixing security issues on the supported Flatpak stable branches 1.14.4, 1.12.8, and 1.10.8.

One issue (CVE-2023-28101) involves maliciously crafted metadata hiding permissions using special characters and the other (CVE-2023-28100) involves an ioctl system call allowing copy/paste on virtual terminals (tty1, tty2, etc.)

Here is the 27kg (50lbs)server that has been building and testing McPixel 3 for over two dozens build targets.

The server is an old HP Proliant I got for $100 and filled it up with the cheapest ram and storage I could find ending up with 56GB for ram (these were 50 cent per 2GB ECC stick!), 24 cores (dual opted on from Bronze Age or something) and 1TB of storage (8 cheap 136GB SAS drives in RAID 5).

The game has a built in unit test, where you can make it basically 100% itself using a script!

FYI, there is an actively funded effort on behalf of the LaTeX Team to make PDF documents created with LaTeX accessible. With only two or three volunteers working in the project it is taking some time, but progress has been made. #TeXLaTeX

We want to (because Mastodon absolutely rocks), but this would need to be coded on the Mozilla Foundation side of things since we share the platform. It's probably more likely to happen once Mozilla.social gets properly stood up here and starts having a larger presence.

But rest assured, I'm pushing for stuff like this to happen. It's a great suggestion!

The second part in the series is an overview of the Assembly 2 workbench for @FreeCAD: workflow, features, stability, performance etc. This WB has been unmaintained since 2019, so there's limited use for it. The third part (coming soon) will deal with the A2plus workbench

Are you a #Fediverse developer?

There's a new initiative by @gabek (the lead developer of the Fediverse livestreaming platform @owncast) called FediDocs. It aims to provide an easy-to-find set of documentation for how to federate with a Fedi platform, in order to promote better federation between platforms.

The FediDocs website is still very new and empty (fedidocs.org/about/) but if you are a Fedi developer please contact @gabek about contributing info on federating with your project.

I often use very short microbreaks during the day to doodle away at some music. Let me show you. This is a snippet from the latest thing I've been chipping away at for a couple days here and there.

OK, File History, I'm done. After about a day a few weeks back, it successfully backed up my brand new laptop (I.e. fairly minimal data.) It didn't run on the hourly schedule I configured, but I regularly checked and confirmed that the last backup was within a reasonable threshold, usually 2-3 hours.

After the network rebuild, everything runs over WireGuard, and I've moved my external drive to ZFS and a Samba server. Predictably, performance has gone into the toilet as the initial backup enters its second day.

Reading this article was the final straw. If the restoration process has that many footguns, I'm out.

Can anyone recommend an accessible file-based backup for Windows I can run on a schedule and point at a networked drive? I'd look myself, but literally every time I've done this I've accrued a pile of inaccessible backup apps with inaccessible uninstallers.
