TIL: #Wayland breaks most screen readers, as they are not not intended by design. (they need to interact with other apps)

Wayland is now the default in pretty much all gnome distros.

Orca has workarounds, but they are not merged and not fully working. (And a blind user can't built it without a working screen reader)

I'm not entirely sure if I got this correct, but it seems to me like the #Linux community once again booted the #blind.

Turns out the actual reason my video streaming was broken was an upstream kernel bug where under certain circumstances if a packet too big ICMP was received on one interface but a different interface was sending the traffic, the cache on the egress interface wouldn't be properly updated, so full marks to Fastly for diagnosing that and working to get it upstream: lore.kernel.org/netdev/4be64c2…

Today in #MatrixRooms: Searching #Matrix rooms from multiple places, just like with #SepiaSearch or #LemmyVerse.

Detailed instructions can be found in the alt text. In short, for #Element and #SchildiChat Web/Desktop user:
0. Open search in Element (Ctrl+K)
1. In the "Show" dropdown menu, press "Add new server...". Type matrixrooms.info and proceed.
2. Pick newly added rooms directory.

More on how to make this work in mobile apps, let all users of your instance benefit from this rooms directory or set this up as a search engine on your very own #SearXNG:

I just came across this repo which shows the limits of Rust's memory safety enforcement: github.com/Speykious/cve-rs Also see this comment by David Chisnall, best known for CHERI, a project to implement hardware-based memory safety: lobste.rs/s/ovxzr2/blazingly_f…
in reply to Matt Campbell

It's tempting to conclude from this that the whole "memory safety" selling point of Rust is a lie, and we might as well go back to writing C and C++. I'm definitely already too invested in Rust to do that, at least for some existing projects. But I'll at least tone down the Rust evangelism that our community is unfortunately infamous for. Anyway, I guess Rust code is still, in practice, safer than C++ and especially C.
