Today we're launching a new #Mastodon feature that will highlight writers and journalists that are active on the fediverse when their their articles are being shared.

There's a fun little browser extension called "StreetPass for Mastodon", which notices if websites you're browsing have official Fediverse accounts:

➡️ streetpass.social

When you check your StreetPass, it will show you a list of all the official accounts from the sites you've been browsing. It does this offline, your browsing data doesn't leave your machine, and the code is free open source.

Official accounts are detected by verification (more info: fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-a…).

The Orbit Speak sounds neat, but it has 3GB of ram and 32GB of storage. It's also Android, so I kind of doubt the company will keep it updated and running on the latest software. Were I in the market for such a device, the Blazie one still sounds better. Besides, I hate every keyboard Orbit makes. orbitresearch.com/product/orbi…

oof. Beyond the basic apps offered, there's no mention of a Play Store or other way to install other apps you need for Android. My guess this is not play-certified or anything, but I may be wrong there, it's just odd that if it's Android under the hood (which it very might well be,) they don't mention at all Android capabilities or any screen reader like using Talkback or their own and the Braille keyboard. Hard pass for me.

Listeners to my presentation over the weekend about AI in the workplace will note my observation that it would be wonderful if you could ask JAWS Picture Smart questions in advance of the image being submitted, such as, "Describe the pie chart only". I knew this JAWS feature was coming but could not say so. Here it is.
Very useful for example if you've submitted a form on a web site and you've not moved to the next screen. You can ask, "what are the errors in this form?"
You could also write, "solve this captia for me", without having to scan the image first.
I really believe in this additional enhancement.
Quoting David Goldfield: The July update for JAWS 2024 has been released. It includes an easier way of using Picture Smart, the ability to ask a question upon submitting an image, an alert warning if there's an issue with the image, like the window not being maximized, initial support for the new Outlook app replacing Windows Mail, lots of improvements to Web and Aria navigation, improved Teams support and lots more.

@Lprazdnik I do understand these are very different products, but given the BTSpeak is using open-source hardware and software with seemingly minor modifications, it's hard not to feel like the unit is overpriced compared to this. We know that the Raspberry Pi compute module in the BTSpeak is pretty affordable, it sounds like both have had work put into custom applications and a custom launcher, and while the BTSpeak does have a desktop environment on it, it's once again leveraging existing open-source tech to make that happen. I wonder what the real story is.

On July 2, 1982, Larry Walters attached 43 weather balloons to his lawn chair, filled them with helium, put on a parachute, and strapped himself into the chair.

Later, when a reporter asked what made him decide to take a patio chair aloft, Walters explained:

"A man can't just sit around."

Well this surely didn't age well.

Makes me wonder about Kling preferring and staying on Twitter.

dammit I really wanted to like LadyBird and SerenityOS.

Edit: The latter seems to be cleaning up its act.

@Seirdy Yeah, I'm sorry to report that SerenityOS is still *like that*, and has not yet improved due to the BDFL leaving: hachyderm.io/@Mara/11271851577…

I shouldn't be surprised, of course the BDFL attracted people like him in leadership positions.

If you want me to use CSS container queries, while acknowledging support can be tricky, maybe don’t use SASS in your examples.

Nothing more frustrating than reading about features native to the web platform that are demonstrated through abstractions which are not part of the web platform.

Also: Keine Angst vor Steuerflucht! Es fehlt nur der politische Wille, um die Vermögensteuer wieder einzusetzen. (1/2)

OMG, okay, so COVERS. I'm so excited about covers. First, I make many of my own (and make some for sale). But.

BUT.

I'm starting the Actual Writing part of my next series and I collected the ten covers (made by and then made into a cohesive set by a different designer) for the series and... I'm so fucking excited about these.
