There's a fun little browser extension called "StreetPass for Mastodon", which notices if websites you're browsing have official Fediverse accounts:

➡️ streetpass.social

When you check your StreetPass, it will show you a list of all the official accounts from the sites you've been browsing. It does this offline, your browsing data doesn't leave your machine, and the code is free open source.

Official accounts are detected by verification (more info: fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-a…).

The Orbit Speak sounds neat, but it has 3GB of ram and 32GB of storage. It's also Android, so I kind of doubt the company will keep it updated and running on the latest software. Were I in the market for such a device, the Blazie one still sounds better. Besides, I hate every keyboard Orbit makes. orbitresearch.com/product/orbi…
in reply to Alex Hall

oof. Beyond the basic apps offered, there's no mention of a Play Store or other way to install other apps you need for Android. My guess this is not play-certified or anything, but I may be wrong there, it's just odd that if it's Android under the hood (which it very might well be,) they don't mention at all Android capabilities or any screen reader like using Talkback or their own and the Braille keyboard. Hard pass for me.
in reply to Tamas G

@Tamasg I'm guessing it's Android mostly because the page mentions that Google voices are available. I don't believe platforms can use those outside of Android. But no, there's no app support at this time according to the product page.
in reply to Tamas G

@Tamasg From the description on either the regular or plus page.
"The Orbit Speak Plus is based on a powerful octa-core Android platform, that has been specifically designed for low-power, high-performance mobile devices and comes with 3GB of memory and 32GB of onboard storage capacity."

Listeners to my presentation over the weekend about AI in the workplace will note my observation that it would be wonderful if you could ask JAWS Picture Smart questions in advance of the image being submitted, such as, "Describe the pie chart only". I knew this JAWS feature was coming but could not say so. Here it is.
Very useful for example if you've submitted a form on a web site and you've not moved to the next screen. You can ask, "what are the errors in this form?"
You could also write, "solve this captia for me", without having to scan the image first.
I really believe in this additional enhancement.
Quoting David Goldfield: The July update for JAWS 2024 has been released. It includes an easier way of using Picture Smart, the ability to ask a question upon submitting an image, an alert warning if there's an issue with the image, like the window not being maximized, initial support for the new Outlook app replacing Windows Mail, lots of improvements to Web and Aria navigation, improved Teams support and lots more.

in reply to Brian Hartgen

To add to this, if you press shift+alt+C you can ask an initial question about the image to both ChatGPT as well as Claude.

@kaveinthran Out of curiosity, is anybody reading this post going to purchase the BT Speak or Orbit Speak? They both seem nice to have, but I don’t feel like I could justify the price when I can do everything with either my iPhone or my light weight laptop. Heck, I’m typing this post using braille screen input on my iPhone. (1/2)

@Lprazdnik I do understand these are very different products, but given the BTSpeak is using open-source hardware and software with seemingly minor modifications, it's hard not to feel like the unit is overpriced compared to this. We know that the Raspberry Pi compute module in the BTSpeak is pretty affordable, it sounds like both have had work put into custom applications and a custom launcher, and while the BTSpeak does have a desktop environment on it, it's once again leveraging existing open-source tech to make that happen. I wonder what the real story is.

On July 2, 1982, Larry Walters attached 43 weather balloons to his lawn chair, filled them with helium, put on a parachute, and strapped himself into the chair.

Later, when a reporter asked what made him decide to take a patio chair aloft, Walters explained:

"A man can't just sit around."

they want all users to be contributors so if this dev community isn’t right for you then its software isn’t either.
in reply to Seirdy

@Seirdy While it does seem Ladybird has problems, it may be the case that the founder leaving SerenityOS has improved its community and made it more likely to e.g. respect trans people. chaos.social/@networkexception…

@skyfaller That’s s good sign but I’m not sure that the rest of the community has changed, and he still looks like one of the lead contributors.

moreover, the section on “ideologically motivated changes” remains in the project’s CoC.

Edit: there’s a PR to change the latter under review in the SerenityOS repo.

Does this already look unreadable to you?

#Ciphertext is nothing else than unreadable data. To decipher it, you need the #key. 🔑

Interestingly enough, already Ancient Greeks used ciphers.

Learn how they did it and what has changed since: tuta.com/blog/what-is-cipherte…

in reply to Tuta

@river
LOL! It may be all Greek to most, but that doesn't mean it is necessarily unreadable or ciphered. This, isn't 😆

Good article! 👍!

in reply to Tuta

nope! That is not unreadable 🤣 It is Greek that any Greek can read and it is not cyphered! Just it doesn't make sense as we see only a small portion of the text but still some words are readable.

We get what you want to say though 😉 and the scytale (σκυταλη) is the perfect example to explain simply encryption and decryption of a message.

Also: Keine Angst vor Steuerflucht! Es fehlt nur der politische Wille, um die Vermögensteuer wieder einzusetzen. (1/2)
